Yeah, the character interaction was the best part. Freeza's such an asshole, I love it.goku the krump dancer wrote:Saw it earlier today… JACO IS HILARIOUS…
In fact the chemistry between all the characters is what I loved most. However the core premise of the movie is still pretty pointless.
C+ at best.

Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread: "Resurrection '
I just saw it today as well and I enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would. I couldn't help but read about the plot and everything that occurred after it was first released in Japan, but just decided to save my opinion on it when I actually saw it.
The battle scenes with the Z-fighters + Jaco against Frieza's army were great! It was refreshing to see them back in action and actually effective again. I also enjoyed the interaction between Whis, Beerus, Goku and Vegeta. The dialogue between them really allowed them to shine and exemplify what they are about as characters.
I loved Whis' breakdown of Goku's and Vegeta's weaknesses and how those observations came back full circle.
As for the whole issue with Vegeta that everyone was originally up in arms about (and it's been a while since I've been in this thread and I'm not sure how people feel about it now), I thought it was just fine for the following reasons
1. When Vegeta fights Goku during his fight with Frieza, it was more comical than anything else.
2. Vegeta not wanting to fight Frieza when he first transform didn't change my view of his character at all. The same why people got on Vegeta for not wanting to fight him should have gotten on Goku also for offering Vegeta his turn right when Frieza changed.
3. Vegeta finishing him when Frieza was weakened and offering to take his turn was even commented on by Goku, so I don't see why people had a problem with it.
4. And Finally, Vegeta's fight with Frieza was all I really needed as a fan of the character. I don't care that Frieza was weakened, Vegeta kicked his ass to the point where Frieza decided to blow up the earth. And it's not like Goku wasn't having a hard time with Frieza before he was weakened. The way I see it, Vegeta wouldn't have fought him much different from Goku had he fought him from the start.
I also didn't have any issues with Gohan's regression. He is a family man who doesn't train much any more, that's it. I don't see what the big deal is. Do I want Gohan to be stronger and on par with Goku and Vegeta? Sure, but he's just not there anymore. It's more frustrating to me that the Z-fighters still train and don't get much stronger. It would be one thing if Gohan did train and was still a scrub, but he just doesn't have the same thirst for battle as his pops. Maybe later on something inspires Gohan to get back to training. Like a legit threat to his family specifically. There is more to do with this character eventually and maybe we'll get it.
Overall, the movie was a blast. I took my son and it was amazing to see how many generations this show has impacted. The theater was packed with people of all ages. The audience was clapping and laughing throughout the whole movie. Dragon Ball is back!
I am curious to see how Super will handle Revival of F and if we will get additional insight on Frieza's training and the new SSJG transformation. But I'm sure the way Super handles the Battle of Gods retelling will tell us all we need to know.
Great movie though, loved it!

If the songs have to be in English, in the future can they just let FUNimation dub them? I shouldn't be able to understand the Japanese version better than the 'English' one.

Saw a subtitled screening today. Just like Battle of Gods, the Japanese version still had the English version of the end theme. Sigh... At least "F" is untouched.
Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread: "Resurrection '
By the magical powers of modern technology, I've managed to see the English dub. I have some thoughts!
Honestly, this is probably the best Dragon Ball-related dub FUNimation has ever done. I don't think I can really fault anyone. Great performances all around.
Chris Ayres is an absolute monster of an actor. His performance is absolutely on par with Ryusei Nakao in this film. It's been repeated ever since Kai, but this is Freeza. Right down to the darkest depths of his character, this is the Freeza Toriyama wrote all those years ago. Ayres gives the English fandom the character in all his glory, and I can't be more pleased. Outstanding. The momentous scream towards the end of the film is perfect.
I'm not a fan of Schemmel. I've been pretty vocal about my thoughts on him in the past, but I will fully admit he's excellent in this film. His goofier sections are higher pitched, and more childlike than ever. The serious parts that were often marred by Superman-esque deliveries in previous outings (Battle of Gods included) are much less apparent this time around. He sounds more neutral; only slipping in hints of cockiness and ferocity when appropriate. I'm so happy to see he's still developing his performance after all of these years. I felt equally as uncomfortable listening to his tortured screams as I did hearing Nozawa. Great work.
Todd Haberkorn makes for a wonderful Jaco. We already heard snippets in Xenoverse, but there wasn't much in there to truly let me judge his performance. Thankfully this film really lets him shine. His chemistry with Monica Rial's Bulma is on point. They truly made the comedy sections towards the start of the film a true joy.
Chris Sabat's Vegeta is once again becoming more and more natural. I felt like it had some more gravel this time around, but it didn't sound forced like his older performances. Very happy to hear him nail the character's big moment in the film. It's a surprisingly dialogue-sparse moment, but what little there is, is done well.
I think my only upset (outside of some writing liberties), would be the casting of Micah Solusod as Tagoma. I felt the voice didn't quite match the character I'd seen in the Japanese version. He's only a minor character, so it's not the end of the world, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
Wonderful dub. Enjoyed it a lot. Still don't think the film is great on the whole, but I have nothing bad to say about this version. Congrats all involved.

Personally, I'm the opposite as you. I love Battle of Gods and can watch it over and over without feeling any fatigue. In fact, I find myself appreciating it more and more with each viewing. However, I've found the opposite with this film. While my first experience was exciting, I felt a little let down by how 'contained' the film felt. As in, it lacks the same universe building that the previous entry had. With each viewing, I find myself picking at flaws and ultimately feeling less and less entertained. The excitement of the spectacle dims, and with little substance to fall back on, I'm left a little cold.
It's still solid, and stands far above many of the other Toei films, but it's not a touch on Battle of Gods.

I noticed a few cool patterns in the narrative (especially during the fights in the film). Almost as if they're thematically linked. It made me appreciate the film even more tbh.

So I finally got to see this today.
I was underwhelmed, to say the least. I absolutely loved Battle of Gods, but this felt pointless, boring, and annoying.
Don't get me wrong. There are tons of great moments in the film. Jaco was definitely a highlight. The dub was fantastic, and I don't throw that around lightly. But it honestly felt like watching any of the other original 13 DBZ films. This is the story that Torishima praised? To that I ask... what story?! There is no story! Freeza shows up, and they fight. That's it. At least the other films were upfront about not trying to be part of the larger DB story and were just an excuse for people to punch each other. By the time Goku and Vegeta arrived, I was already over it. In fact, I was just bored. So bored. And then they tease me back into consciousness by bringing up probably the most intriguing idea I've heard from DB in years: Like I said, that got my attention. I was so eager to see where they were going to go with that, and the answer is... nowhere! It's not even held up as a pretense long enough to wring even the slightest bit of drama out of it. Vegeta's just like, "Ehh... no." Don't get me wrong. I'd probably go crazy if they went the route of Vegeta turning on everybody AGAIN, but at least Freeza is actually offering something I could see Vegeta having a substantial reason to go for, which is more than I can say for any of the other times he went rogue. And if I could have held on to any idea that this movie was about something, that it was about Goku and Vegeta shoring up the weaknesses Whis told them about, the movie goes to great pains to ensure we know they don't learn anything or grow or change in absolutely any way, shape, or form. Throw in some completely random and arbitrary new forms to ensure there are some new action figures on shelves, and we've just hit rock bottom for absolutely pointless. Not as outright cringe-inducing as Dragon Ball Minus but made me left the theatre wondering why it was even made.
But then again, I was really hungry at the time, so maybe I was cranky...

I'm pretty sure it was a mix of 10% crankiness and 90% of the story. I personally enjoyed the film, but then again I had eaten prior to the film and had spoiled the movie's details way back. I just thought of it like a glorified version of the Goku and Friends return OVA thing except with the intent to go more heavy on the action which I found myself really enjoying. I agree with them not expanding enough on things though. That honestly did leave me a bit frustrated, but hey perhaps it was some devious plot by Toei to get people to check out Dragon Ball Super when it gets to the Resurrection F arc.Gaffer Tape wrote:So I finally got to see this today.

That's a bit of an unfair comparison to make. You chose probably the worst animated episode of Super and compared it to what I assume is a decently animated episode of the original. Even then it's absurd because for many shots I feel you have to understand the context behind the image. It's like going to Youtube and pausing when a guy happens to make a weird face and proclaiming that the guy is naturally just really ugly. Also what's the point of this? This has little to do with the Resurrection F movie.kidhero1000 wrote:

If that was the case, why not just make the opening arc of Super Resurrection F then? It's no less marketable than a movie, hell saying "Withness the return of Dragon Ball to TV with Dragon Ball Super! And with it, the grand return of the franchises' greatest villain Freeza!" probably would've been just fine. The movie itself is certainly pointless enough not to even bother existing as its own standalone piece as is.dae428 wrote:I'm pretty sure it was a mix of 10% crankiness and 90% of the story. When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

Well you got your opinion and I can respect it,but I felt battle of gods to me was cringe worthy as a die hard DBZ fan,it's hard seeing 13 films hand drawn an then the 14th theatrical film have really bad colors. BOG made me know what to epect from ROF,and get excited to see 2 upgrades.Ajay wrote:Twice in cinemas. Too many times to list via... other means.LSSJGODSSJ4Gogeta wrote:Not perfect but good. 1. The animation in ROF was much better then BOG.
2. The dub of ROF was MILES better then BOG. In battle of gods sean schemmel obviously isn't trying. He even gives goku a flamboyent accent. Not gay bashing,I just want my anime characters to sound like they are. I'd be mad if they made Itsuki straight in Yu Yu Hakusho.

Chill man I was just joking. I've got no ideas what Toei's planning. Sure I have my own speculations like everyone else but, my main point in my previous post was that Resurrection F didn't expand enough on certain things. Also, no one besides a bunch of idiot YouTube commentors are saying that you have to accept it as canon. It happens to fit into the continuity set by Battle of Gods but so what? We already know that the 2 movies are already being rewritten for better or worse. Would you rather have the movie take place in the Majin Boo arc where Boo is still technically out there but he's not mentioned whatsoever and Gohan has a tail for some reason and Goten isn't born yet? I mean seriously. Do I think Resurrection F is a step back from Battle of Gods? Yes. Was the story pretty bare bones and meaningless? Sure. But heck, I enjoyed watching it as the character interactions, the fight scenes, and humor were leagues above the original Toei movies in my opinion.ekrolo2 wrote: If that was the case, why not just make the opening arc of Super Resurrection F then? Almost as if they're thematically linked. It made me appreciate the film even more tbh.

I actually detetsted that moment about as much as Goku getting hit with a laser rifle. After all this talk about how he hates Goku for killing him and keeping him in Hell, Freeza is so enamored by Vegeta's supposed loyalty to him that he GIVES UP the chance to kill Goku himself?! And what was even worse was that the film was playing it up like Vegeta was going to kill Goku....EVERYONE knew that wasn't going to happen! Just didn't like that moment AT ALL.Gaffer Tape wrote:So I finally got to see this today.
So bored. And then they tease me back into consciousness by bringing up probably the most intriguing idea I've heard from DB in years:Like I said, that got my attention. Not as outright cringe-inducing as Dragon Ball Minus but made me left the theatre wondering why it was even made.Spoiler:
But then again, I was really hungry at the time, so maybe I was cranky...
Tim Duncan is dope and forever.

Him screaming Goku's name actually gave me chills. It was like some sort of creepy closure.Ajay wrote: Chris Ayres is an absolute monster of an actor.
