Dr. Slump - The Movies
Not really sure where else to put this. I've been checking out what I can find of Dr. Slump online and have really been enjoying it. I just found out there was a subtitled North American release of the first five movies, which as far as I know is the only official release of any of the anime stateside.
How ... how are these? Are they worth it? Are they funny? How do they stack up to other JUMP films? And how's the presentation on the set for anyone who has it?

Re: Dr. Slump - The Movies
Herms is credited on the back as well as Kanzenshuu for providing translation work. That's reason enough alone to nab that sucker. (The films themselves are pretty cute though.)Cipher wrote:Not really sure where else to put this. I've been checking out what I can find of Dr. Slump online and have really been enjoying it. Re: Dr. Slump - The Movies
Some of the later posts in this thread may have some of what you seek (after it was actually released).
Personally, I'd just say to buy it and judge for yourself. It's actually a very cheap release (or it was back then anyway, no idea about now). Quality is pretty good and the subs are handled well, seeing how Herms was the one who handled the final pass over them. Buying it also gets you official merchandise with Kanzenshuu's name on it. =P

Ah, thanks for the link to the original thread! It's a bit embarrassing that I didn't try searching for that first.

So how was it received? Did it sell well?
I remember hearing that they were testing the waters with this release, but I never did hear how well it sold...

I personally own the set, and it's great. I love it. The quality of the video is from Slump: the Movies box set. The subtitles are good too.

Re: Dr. Slump - The Movies
Dr. Slump Movie 2 is worth the purchase of the set, alone.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

I don't know, but I think the official TV series from the 80's is possible. Discotek Media is still likely in talks about it.DoomieDoomie911 wrote:So how was it received? Did it sell well?

Re: Dr. Slump - The Movies
I would buy that in a heartbeat. I've read a little bit of the manga, but from what I've been able to find of the anime (very little with subtitles; looks like there was never much community interest in doing fansubs), I might actually prefer it animated. Just having Arale's adorable voice lands a lot of the jokes better than can be done on page (not that they don't work there as well). I've laughed out loud at least once during every episode I've watched.Hellspawn28 wrote:I don't know, but I think the official TV series from the 80's is possible. I'd also take the '90s version, which doesn't seem bad either, and it looks unusually high-budget for Toei, but the '80s version seems funnier on average from what I've seen.

Let's hope so. I've always wanted to watch the anime.Hellspawn28 wrote:I don't know, but I think the official TV series from the 80's is possible. Discotek Media is still likely in talks about it.DoomieDoomie911 wrote:So how was it received? Did it sell well?

Re: Dr. Slump - The Movies
I think this set is great, and totally recommend it! Like the DB/Z movies, it assumes you know the characters, but honestly there's not too much you need to know about them. If you're confused, I'm sure a quick look through Wikipedia or something will catch you up. Or you could probably reach out on this forum If you want more of my opinions, you can look through the old thread linked above.
The manga is fantastic, and back in print as well! But if you want just a quick sample of what the series is like, the movies do the trick!
Of course, I should admit that part of my motivation for recommending the DVD so hard is that I want Discotek to see enough sales to justify licensing more! Brady, aka Ashura, aka the graphic designer who worked on this set, was on a recent ANNCast episode and these came up in conversation. Now, he does not represent Discotek officially, but he seems pretty close to those guys, so I think what he says has some weight. His opinion was basically, "I heard the first movies set did ok, so we might get the rest of the movies. But the TV series seems unlikely" and asked "Do you REALLY want 200+ episodes of Dr. Slump?" The answer to that last question for me is YES! I don't buy a lot of anime, and often wait to see if I can find it discounted, but I preordered the Dr. Slump movie set, and would do the same for any other Dr. Slump anime product brought out by Discotek.

You've convinced me. I'll buy this set.
If I like it as much as I think I will, I'll read the manga, as well.

Yeah, looking through Diskotek's catalogue and realizing they're one of the only companies seemingly okay with doing subtitled releases of long, older anime series has made me eager to recommend this.medama_oyaji wrote:Of course, I should admit that part of my motivation for recommending the DVD so hard is that I want Discotek to see enough sales to justify licensing more! I really, really want to see the original Slump anime come stateside.
I'd buy it on release. I want it bad.

Re: Dr. Slump - The Movies
The movie pack was reasonably priced for what we got. So long as the rest of the releases follow suit (no $30 for like 4 episodes sets), I'd be down for purchasing any and all Dr. Slump material they can get their hands on. The rest of the films, the original series, the remake, etc.
While their at it, can they grab the other shorts based on Toriyama's works and release them as a compilation? I own pretty much all his manga releases, but my collection of animations based on his works is sorely lacking.
