Dragon Ball is all about them gags, that was originally the idea. Also, i never really liked the tomboy Videl, and she is not the impostor now, same thing happened to Chi Chi when she got married.fadeddreams5 wrote:Watched it. Good animation. My personal gripes:
- So many kawaii expressions, such as Goku's cute face palm when Beerus explains he won't use 100% on a saiyan, Goku and Beerus expressing the pain of their headbutting in a comical matter (sure as hell didn't see that in the Majin Vegeta fight), and random laughter or goofy fits of anger.
- Every time that Videl impostor is on-screen, I cringe. I really liked Videl in both the saiyaman arc and older Toei movies/specials.
- That Goku Arrival theme needs to die.

Early Dragon Ball was all gag fighting (e.g. First tournament arc). But that gradually subsided. I pointed out the Majin Vegeta battle, where headbutting was present, for example.Kuririn Fan wrote:Dragon Ball is all about them gags, that was originally the idea. Videl is an impostor. Chi Chi didn't become a completely different character; her maternal and, I guess, wife instincts kicked in. Videl in Super is a completely different character from Videl in DBZ.

Re: Super Episode 13 (04 October 2015)
Videl basically became a victim to what almost every character who had 1) a drive to train and 2) some more pronounced negative traits. She became a generic nice person and lost her drive to train. It happened Tien, Piccolo and Buu all of who once took great pride in combat and challenging themselves. Vegeta also lost his in GT but at least there they built him up to a point where you can buy him just focusing on his family and chilling the f*ck out already.fadeddreams5 wrote:Early Dragon Ball was all gag fighting (e.g. First tournament arc). Re: Super Episode 13 (04 October 2015)
True, but I loved her depictions in the movies. In the 2nd Broly one, she was like an older sister to Goten and Trunks. In Super, she's like a maternal figure. In the Janemba and Hirudegarn movies, she kicked butt alongside Gohan; they were superheroes. And in the 2008 OVA, she didn't come across at all like she does in Super.
Super's Videl is so distinctive, generic and lifeless, it's almost creepy.

She's literally the first person we see. And she does speak. She's completely annoyed and embarrassed (visually shown) by her father for taking credit for Buu's defeat. She says so to Gohan while sitting in a pretty unlady-like (in comparison to Super's Videl) pose on her couch. At one point, Gohan even thinks to himself that he'll be able to avoid Videl's yelling thanks to Goku deciding to go to Satan's gig.Doctor. wrote:She barely spoke.fadeddreams5 wrote:And in the 2008 OVA, she didn't come across at all like she does in Super.
I can't even imagine Super's Videl making those sort of expressions, or whipping Gohan. She's like... a creepy doll.

I definitely miss tsundere!Videl. The change-up is even more noticeable when you place her next to still-obviously-tsundere!Vegeta. Can you imagine if they did that to Vegeta? (Well, it is Vegeta so it'd be hilarious for a brief moment, but still!) Gokû would notice right away.
In another genre, you could probably do a genuine thriller story with what's going on with Videl; or turn it into a gag of sorts that she may or may not be in on herself. Instead she's just gonna fade into the background like white noise from a TV. T_T
Great Saiyaman 1 and Great Saiyaman 2 had such potential to be a cool side-story too!

Fan reactions would be pretty funny if Vegeta randomly became the "hope of the universe" and openly considered Goku his best friend in Super.

It would still be better than turning him into some weird Cell & Buu Saga asshole hybrid he randomly is during RoF.

I've gotten tired of this awful series. the only reason i tune in is because its a dragon ball.
its a shame, they finally made a new dragon ball series but they did it with such low quality and childish tone.
for me its non-canon.

Doesn't mean Krillin stopped being Goku's best friend. You can have more than one best friend, anyway.

the number one speech is purely about strength, just rewatch/reread it. but in his eyes goku is still a commoner and someone he must surpass to become the strongest.
and i wouldnt say BFF. he sometimes spend years apart without speaking to him. if goku has a BFF, it will be training.

This is true. That character completely reverted back in that movie. His characterization made no sense to me.ekrolo2 wrote:It would still be better than turning him into some weird Cell & Buu Saga asshole hybrid he randomly is during RoF.

I'm not saying the arcs didn't have gags. Even the Cell saga had gags. I'm saying this wasn't directly incorporated into the serious battles after a while. I mean, you have genuine funny moments that subvert expectations, like Goku biting Frieza's tail, but the tone or mood is never disrupted as frequently as it is in Super, with, what I assume, several fans are calling childish antics. Even in the Kid Buu fight, you have them biting each other, but the tension remains because, in the midst of all those strange attacks, Goku maintains a serious disposition and knows what's at stake. Here, it really feels like Goku and Beerus are just playing a game, which, perhaps, is true. However, I'd much prefer a genuine, fierce battle than all this "ow ow ow... that's not fair, Beerus-sama! *kawaii face*" and "Ping Ping" nonsense.Kuririn Fan wrote: 5 out of 10 arcs are light hearted and filled with gags.

Re: Super Episode 13 (04 October 2015)
That's just an excuse so Vegeta can keep acting like a dick because Toriyama thinks that's the only way Vegeta can ever keep training (being relevant to the story). In the Buu arc he accepts Goku's the best and cooperates with him to save the world. Then RoF turns him into an asshole again who belitles Goku, refuses to cooperate with him and generally acts like a combination of his Cell & early Buu Saga self. Completely ignoring his developments from those arcs, one of the many reasons why I piss on all things RoF.Froggy wrote:vegeta doesnt have 'friends'. he will always embrace his saiyan royal way.FortuneSSJ wrote:Nop, he considers Goku his best friend.Kuririn Fan wrote: No, that says that he considers Goku stronger than him.
