Okay, I attempted an unboxing, but I screwed it up at the last minute by reinserting the DVD books on the wrong order without notice when I was showing the spines of boxes 1-5 together. And since I can't retake it after the box has been opened, I instead just took some pictures of the box, books and spine art, and made this video.

Oh well.

There's actually a pretty funny dub error here, as the lip syncing of Gohan's dub dialogue is way off, undoubtedly due to how zoomed in Funi's old 4:3 masters were:
Being as this isn't Kai, I won't be watching the dub, so this doesn't affect me, but still, for the people who will be watching the dub, that's gotta be odd... You'd think FUNi would have gone back and tweaked it some here. God knows they've recorded Gohan saying these lines 100 Times between all the video games. They've probably got the takes to tweak it.

Is Spirit vs. Spirit still left out in the English version?

In this day and age... geez  I mean come one, syncing the dub is one of the reasons we wait so long for these things. Of course, I don't want to take another step towards complaining since its still eclipsed by us actually getting the boxes.

There was something strange at the end of episode 175. The last shot of Goku before the end credits looked like it was freeze-framed and had zooming in applied via Windows Movie Maker or something. :?

Woo, got mine in the mail today, though I shouldn't watch it yet, I have to finish of Dragon Box Z 4, though I've only got 4 episodes left, I think...

I can't wait to get to the "High School Saga". Never seen it uncut or in Japanese before.

Or the Other World Budoukai.

Could someone post a screenshot of Erasa, please?

I always remember her skin tone sticking out to me because the colors made it look like she had a sunburn...

Image

I was wondering if these same colors are in the Dragonbox.

She's called Eraza in the subtitles, not sure if that was used in the orange bricks.

Image

And she does look a little more red than everyone else.

Also, she's not in the Top 3 Sexy Characters in the Dragon Book! She's sexier than Angela or Pizza, surely.

EDIT: I just remembered, I couldn't watch two episodes of my Season 6 set, or even the replacement discs! I'll get to see them too!

EDIT2: Finally finished off the last three episodes of DBoxZ 4 so I can start this baby. First episode contains THIS:

I don't want to be a wet blanket, but I have to say this again. The colours on the DBOX footage are quite faded and discolored due to the aging of the master films. They are incorrect and not how they originally looked. This is the fact that Toei confirmed. You have to refer to the colour coordinations or the cels to check the original colours.

Yeah, I was reading about 16mm film on Wikipedia and it said the following near the end of the article...
Wikipedia wrote:Over a period of many decades, the pigments in color 16mm film slowly degrade and become transparent. The pigments degrade at different rates with red being the longest-lasting. This inevitably results in color film that now appears to be reddish, with few other colors.

Wow I think I just found an animation mistake. I watching through episode 173 and Goku Just brought Dende back to the lookout and went to fetch Gohan and Kuririn. Gohan is wairing his casual clothing inside Kame house but the moment they arrive on the lookout his in his Piccolo attire.

I guess he could have got changed before they left but there doesn't seem to be anything that suggests Goku didn't just grab em and teleport dirrectly to the lookout.

The same thing happens just before the Saiyans arrive on Earth; Gohan is wearing his Kame gi during the last training scene, and when they sense the Saiyans approaching, he's suddenly wearing his Piccolo outfit. I think it's just a case of the manga not translating well to the animation--it's easier to leave things up to interpretation between manga panels than it is in a television series. :P

Are we absolutely certain about that? Not doubting it as likely but consider what TV broadcasts were like circa 1990. HD it ain't. I wonder if it's possible that the animators intentionally chose some "off" colors because they knew that when displayed on TV it would appear as they wanted it to. So when you go back to the cels, the paint they did use looks strange by comparison.

It's not completely outrageous. Color tricks like that have been used in other mediums. Genesis games are notorious for using crosshatching patterns to achieve shading and transparency effects when played through composite or RF inputs which most everybody used at the time. Of course when played on emulators or through RGB all of a sudden you lose the effect and see the obvious crosshatching which you really weren't meant to see.

And unless Hollywoodland was lying to me, George Reeves wore an off-color Superman costume when they filmed in black and white because actual red and blue wouldn't have looked right under those conditions.

Yes, it's true. The example I constantly bring up is the complaints leveled at the Blu-ray release of Sleeping Beauty. They were criticized for color correcting to match the cells, when everyone who knew animation knew that the colors of the cells weren't the colors that were intended. The animators had purposely oversaturated the cells because they were aware that they'd be dulled somewhat upon being photographed.

Gotta say that there's some fridge brilliance with the redder skin tones considering most of the time we see these guys they're in situations that actually would result in a flushed appearance.

Yeah, I remember you mentioning that a while back, I think. One particularly glaring thing I notice is in Sonic the Hedgehog.
Image
There's a waterfall in Green Hill zone that when played on composite has significant banding which creates a dramatic rainbow effect. It's technically a "flaw" but, all things considered, real water actually does that. Maybe the pixels were deliberately patterned to take advantage of banding? Maybe it was intentional or maybe it's fridge brilliance. But who knows?

It's why I always refer to the Dragon Boxes as "the best available" rather than "the way it was meant to be seen." I'm obviously not endorsing color correction to attempt to match whatever was actually intended since that would be so inexact, though. I think we just have to take the cels for what they are, intent be damned.
