What mix of dub versions will you introduce new fans to?

For me, this is a simple matter. If the person is already an Anime fan and thus used to watching foreign cartoons with subtitles, then I'll introduce him or her to the original version. If the person isn't and Anime fan or is young (please, no smartarse remarks about illiteracy or dyslexia), then I'll introduce him or her to the dub. FUNimation's new Kai dub is excellent and even the purest of purists can watch it, but if the person is an Anime fan, I'd rather introduce him or her to it in Japanese since we'll also be watching the first series in Japanese (which is honestly an imperative; Nozawa as kid Goku is delightfully wonderful).

I also don't quite understand why only anime fans would be willing/capable to watch the show subtitled. I can (almost) understand and accept the dub argument for children, but it doesn't make sense to me for someone who is grown. If you like the Japanese version (and it seems that you do) why wouldn't you expose someone to the show that you love, the way you love to watch it? (Assuming of course that that person is capable and willing to watch the show subtitled.)

If somebody was dead set against watching the show in Japanese, then I suppose you would have no choice but to expose them to Funimation's dub. Even a (in my opinion) crappy version of DragonBall is still better than no DragonBall. Thankfully for me that would never be an issue because I don't know anybody personally who hates watching things subtitled.

The pacing and the length (or lengthiness) of Z are two things that non-fans frequently complain about, and understandably so (I've developed somewhat of a tolerance for such tardiness, which possibly had been quickened by nostalgia). Kai is shorter and well-paced so it's the better choice for newcomers who are likely to get bored with melodramatic staring contests. As I'm sure you know, Kai omits the Boo saga -- which I consider to be an integral part of the series -- so we would have to revert to Z in that case.

By the way, I wasn't referring to anyone in particular. I just used "the person" so I didn't have to use two sets of pronouns.

I was speaking generally. Obviously, different people differ. But in general, I just feel that non-anime fans would be less inclined to watch an 80's cartoon in a foreign language. It's not a capabillity thing or even a cultural thing; it's just preferential thing.

You're right. I do prefer the Japanese version, but I don't mind the Dragon Ball dub and as I said in my previous post, I think the Kai dub is excellent. The Boo saga dub is not great, but it's passable. To me, it would be more about the other person's enjoyment rather than my own. If he or she prefers to watch the dubbed version, so be it.

I'll probably introduce them to Dragon Ball the original first in either Japanese or English, then go straight to Kai with Kikuchi's score in Japanese or English and finish it off with the Dragon Boxes of the Majin Boo saga (again in both languages). I don't have a reason to limit a person with only one language version.

It depends how old they are. If they are a kid then going with the Funi dub will work. If they are a teenager or adult then watching the series in subs would work.
