How did the re-cast characters turn out (in your opinion)?
Re: How did the re-cast characters turn out (in your opinion
I dunno know about them being teens (maybe Gero fiddled with their vocal chords) but I do feel they fit the characters. I especially love Huber's 17 this time around. No more of that mumbling and thank god.

I agree that they fit, just saying Huber, McCoy and Clinkenbeard don't sound like teens.matt0044 wrote:I dunno know about them being teens (maybe Gero fiddled with their vocal chords) but I do feel they fit the characters. I prefer 100% of the recasts. I wish they recast more.

I don't think they needed to recast that many more, just horrible voices like Kaio-sama. I wonder why they didn't use the narrator to voice him.batistabus wrote:I prefer 100% of the recasts. I wish they recast more.

Re: How did the re-cast characters turn out (in your opinion
As far as I can tell they kept as many roles the same as they could. The people that were replaced aren't working for Funi or living in Texas anymore so not much they could do about them.
It seems like a lot of people try to portray the fact they didn't get Nadolny or some of the others back as proof that they were "cleaning house." That's both low and untruthful.
I mean, if they were gonna keep Ms. Young as Freeza - a voice that I, an admitted nostalgia fanboy, thought was absolutely terrible - they obviously weren't looking to change that much in terms of the cast.

I don't think it's low to say they want to recast because many of the cast members were hired because of a lack of resources at the time the in-house dub began.

Well that's why Sabat had a 101 roles but I've heard plenty of the voices from Z in other Funimation dubs. It's obvious they had no problems with them, even after they weren't so horribly restricted.
I mean, what main voices were recast? Gohan and Bulma and that's it right? They were obviously satisfied with most of the cast as it was and the insinuation that they didn't hire back some actors because they thought they were terrible is based on nothing.

I'm not arguing that they were recast because they were horrible, but that wouldn't be the worst reason in the world to recast. If they were going to recast only three roles, I'm glad it was Gohan, Bulma and Freeza.Nikkolas wrote:Well that's why Sabat had a 101 roles but I've heard plenty of the voices from Z in other Funimation dubs. Re: How did the re-cast characters turn out (in your opinion
I'm only on Episode 21 so I haven't heard too much of the new Freeza but...yeah, I'm glad for that recast. Ms. Young is a wonderful voice-actress but she was miscast big time.
I do enjoy Clinkenbeard's Gohan when she isn't mixing him up with Luffy. ( I do not like Luffy. I don't want to hear him when I'm listening to a character I do like) The scene where Gohan tells Chi Chi to shut up and that he has to go to Namek was really well-done.
Rial's Bulma I can take it or leave it. She's adequate enough I guess.

I really like Rial as Bulma, but I think she's without a doubt better than Vollmer.

Re: How did the re-cast characters turn out (in your opinion
I never had a problem with Vollmer. As I said in the "Your opinion on Kai" thread, I really do love Funi's Dragon Ball dub.
But man oh man, I've definitely found my favorite recast so far. I never much cared for Nadolny's Gohan but I didn't hate it. For me, Young's Freeza was the worst main voice in Z.
But now I've had several episodes of Ayres' Freeza and it is brilliant. I can finally see why so many consider him a respectable antagonist. He is absolutely delightful in his polite sadism and I hope he maintains this level of greatness for when Freeza breaks down.

Re: How did the re-cast characters turn out (in your opinion
I think the brilliant thing about Monica Rial's Bulma is that most people probably wouldn't even know it's a recast. She takes just enough of Tiffany Vollmer's take on the character (which was, admittedly, generally pretty one-dimensional) and then does the rest of it her own way, so that it doesn't even strike most people as a recast, but sounds more like a natural evolution of the character, as if Vollmer had actually stayed in voice over and improved the same way Chris Sabat and Sean Schemmel did.
At least, that's how I feel. Now that I'm more familiar with Rial's other roles, I can hear the differences a lot better, but I thought it was very subtle, in a good way.

Re: How did the re-cast characters turn out (in your opinion
I disagree that the difference is subtle. I don't know what Vollmer sounds like in real life, but her Bulma voice wasn't pleasant to my ears. She sounded airheaded and often shrill. Rial's is much more pleasing and smooth. My favorite voice for Bulma is still Lalainia Lindbjerg.CaBrPi wrote:I think the brilliant thing about Monica Rial's Bulma is that most people probably wouldn't even know it's a recast. Re: How did the re-cast characters turn out (in your opinion
Yeah, that could have worked. Anything is better than the previous English dub voices for Kaio-sama. Schemmel's Kaio is hilariously bad.ABED wrote:I don't think they needed to recast that many more, just horrible voices like Kaio-sama. Android 19: I definitely prefer Philip Wilburn as #19. Tod Haberkorn is by no means bad in the role, in fact he does a really good job and his voice is pretty fitting it's just that I think the high pitch Elmo-esc voice with a Chinese(?) accent that Wilburn used added a layer of creepiness to #19. Apparently Tod Haberkorn voiced #19 in the Raging Blast games, if that's true then I wish he had of used that voice for Kai.
Re: How did the re-cast characters turn out (in your opinion
On Episode 35 now and I must say that I prefer Brice Armstrong's Ginyu. Mr. Elliott just sounds like he's trying to replicate Armstrong's Ginyu but he can't get his voice as deep/low as Armstrong could. The overall effect is less impressive in my opinion.

Android 18: Honestly I like both voices, Clinkenbeard is closer to #18's Japanese voice who gives #18 a more condescending yet feminine tone while McCoy gave her more of an aggressive tomboyish tone, both are excellent for the role.

I dunno. That Elmo voice was pretty... off putting to me.ringworm128 wrote:Android 19: I definitely prefer Philip Wilburn as #19. I'd rather have Todd as Oolong anyhow.

I'll listen to Armstrong as any character, but he does sound a little too old for Ginyu. Granted, we don't have an age for Ginyu but I imagine him as sounding like a guy in his 30s, maybe early 40s. The actor who plays him in Kai is excellent.
This is my feeling as well.ringworm128 wrote:Android 18: Honestly I like both voices, Clinkenbeard is closer to #18's Japanese voice who gives #18 a more condescending yet feminine tone while McCoy gave her more of an aggressive tomboyish tone, both are excellent for the role.
