Not to go off topic, but who's Goku in this clip? It sounds really familiar, but it doesn't quite sound like Kirby Morrow to me (and I was pretty sure he didn't come on until the Boo arc anyway).
That's Peter Kelamis as he did the early part of this dub.

Ohhhh, okay. I'm going to assume he's the one who did the first three movies, correct? That's the Canadian voice for Goku I'm most used to (having seen those movies with that dub many times, but only having seen very few episodes of that dub), but it's been a long time, so no wonder I only scarcely recognized him.

I watch the japanese and the dub, but I think I end up watching the dub(ocean for 1-53 and then funi for the rest) more often because I like the music better.

#1-53 (+ Tree of Might) Ocean/Saban DBZ dub. The censorship edits are awful but the voice acting and Shuki Levy's amazing score more than make up for it. This dub just has this really warm Saturday Morning Cartoon feel to it, whilst also being very dark at times due to the music. If this dub was uncensored and had better scripts then i'm sure it would be god-tier for a lot of people.

Second choice for me would be the original Funi dub because that's the dub i grew up watching, although i don't hold much blind nostalgia for it since it's acting and music really wasn't all that great.

Oh, geez, how did I miss this? I have to make sure my voice is heard.

Japanese, of course!

I'm surprised Japanese has forty-seven votes. It never really feels like there's that sort of majority.

As others have said, this is a neat idea for a topic!

I pitched my tent in the "original Japanese version" camp long ago and have never looked back.

He's probably referring to the Bardock special. Zarbon was the one who first recommended destroying Planet Vegeta because the saiyans were rapidly growing in strength.
It was actually Beerus disguised as Zarbon #StayWoke
Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

I know the data concretely states this, but it feels like I'm reading a lot more "FUNi Z" or "FUNi Kai" votes in this very thread.

Japanese for me. I strongly believe that every show must be watched in it's original form if possible.

Well to me the English dubs of Dragon Ball Z are like a whole different show all together. Obviously people in Japan would want to watch the original English version of a show like say The Simpsons since it's probably much better than what ever dub they have for it over there and features the only 'real' Simpsons cast, but for a show like Dragon Ball Z, the dubs are just as good and internationally recognized as the source version.

But to a Japanese person and many users on this forum, Masako Nozawa and co. are the only 'real' Dragon Ball cast. I'm not sure I really understand your argument.

Yeah, while I agree with your assertion that it's like a whole other show entirely, I feel compelled to throw out a "citation needed" for the rest. I was under the impression that, aside from English-language fans of DBZ, the dub of DBZ was seen as a low-quality (both in translation and production) relic that even the cast admits was pretty damned bad.

And I wouldn't exactly call any dub of the series "internationally recognized," for that matter (aside from saying that people recognize, "yes, there are indeed dubs of the show."). Within a particular dub's target audience? Sure, it's recognized. But all around the world? I think only the original Japanese version has that kind of renown.

And I know it's off-topic, but I don't think Kakacarrottop's example works because Japanese fans apparently love their dub of The Simpsons (so much so that they got mad when FOX replaced the voice cast for the Japanese dub of the movie).

Yeah, I've definitely gotten that vibe.

Since my example was 'What voices come to your head when someone says "Dragon Ball"?', I guess the answer to many are the dub voices despite them watching the show in Japanese now. I feel like this has influenced a lot of users' answers where they elaborate on why they finally settled on the original.

If you combine all the English votes, you get 23 compared to the 46 user votes for Japanese. That's not a bad divide, really.

On a different note - if anyone has any requests for Westwood cast clips they'd like me to upload, don't hesitate to ask  I just put up Vegeta's confession performed by Brian Drummond! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXczV872jso

I'm definitely an ocean fan, but it isn't my definitive version of the show, as I stated earlier that I watch it in Japanese.

If anything, the dub would be like my hobby whilst the original would be my career.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

I hope this doesn't sound offensive to anyone, but my first experience with the English dub was Trunks TV Special. I downloaded it in english and I thought that it was a fandub or something. Characters didn0t sound right to me and all the music changes seemed very out of place and I thought that was done because they couldn't get the original music to work with what I thought was a fan dub. That was my first opinion of the english dub.

The spanish castillian dub always seemed bad from the first time I watched it, and the Valencian dub, which was the one I saw the most as a kid, was more nostalgic than good. I recently watched a few episodes to remember how it was and even though I consider it superior to the castillian one, it's still pretty bad.

To sum up, nothing like the original version.

Like many others here, I've watched several dubs...FUNi Kai, Ocean/Westwood Z, H.K Cantonese Z & Kai will always have a special place in my heart, but my favorite will always be the original Japanese .
