Of course it's lower, One Piece is much more popular in Japan than Dragon Ball is. I think people need to face the facts, just because Dragon Ball is back, it does not mean it will suddenly be the king like it was before, it actually has competition now.FortuneSSJ wrote:Not really. With a new series, I was expecting Super to get on par with One Piece, but its always lower. And the reason why super episode 1 ranked so high was because some series didn't air that week. So, nothing new in these rankings. Buu arc Kai all over again.
I also don't understand why anyone: Funimation, Crunchyroll, etc... isn't streaming Super episodes for overseas fanbase.

Merchandise is the most important. TV ratings themselves do not prove anything. Kai 1.0 had a average of 9.4% with its lowest rated episode having a 6.4% and its highest rated episode a 12.3%, and it still got cancelled due to the merchandise dropping like a stone.LightBing wrote:What's the most determining factor for Super to keep airing? A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

It did, but none of its competition actually came close to Dragon Ball's success, let alone One Piece. One Piece's success is even greater than that of Dragon Ball's at its prime, and you expect a newly-reborn DB franchise to compete? Let Super run for a couple of years to see if it gains even more popularity first.FortuneSSJ wrote:It always had competition. Re: Dragon Ball Super TV Ratings Discussion Thread
It has literally been two weeks. It is a bit early for "always". Also, DBS is essentially the opening act for One Piece. If DBS does well it is likely to boost One Piece's ratings since people already sitting and watching tv might as well sit and watch both. The converse is not likely true.FortuneSSJ wrote: Not really. One Piece is a shounen and its always higher.
We were on par with Detective Conan, though, and that is not bad. Our distance to One Piece is about the same as last week. Give it a few weeks; see if it picks up or not.FortuneSSJ wrote: With a new series, I was expecting Super to get on par with One Piece, but its always lower. Also, Dragon Ball Kai was often below shows like Yokai Watch and Precure, even if it got similar percentages. This is not the case with Super so far, which is several points ahead of both those shows.

I don't think we have to worry, even if the ratings are bad and they stop airing the show on Fuji TV, they'll most likely continue to produce it for the international market, just like they were going to do with the Buu arc of Kai.

Japan (and most of the world outside of North America) doesn't really do cable. Super is on broadcast television.TheGmGoken wrote:Perhaps it's an issue with the cable companies or power outages if there was a storm

Re: Dragon Ball Super TV Ratings Discussion Thread
This week Detective Conan had a 5.7 rating. Aside from that the worst rating that an episode received in the past 2 years was a 6.6 rating.
And DBS shouldn't be expected to be #1. The new DBZ movies have done really well but not nearly as well as the One Piece or Conan movies (much closer to the latter though) so I would never expect it to get better ratings on TV.
As long as it gets better ratings than Kai 2 though.

It probably won't be #1 again, but it all really depends on how good it gets. I don't expect it to get as good as the original anime did, which is part of the reason it won't be #1. It's pretty good so far though, but the original anime run was just something special.Doctor. wrote:Of course it's lower, One Piece is much more popular in Japan than Dragon Ball is. Re: Dragon Ball Super TV Ratings Discussion Thread
That seems highly unlikely. The Boo arc of Kai was produced on demand, and done very cheaply with existing footage. It was a unique situation.UpFromTheSkies wrote:I don't think we have to worry, even if the ratings are bad and they stop airing the show on Fuji TV, they'll most likely continue to produce it for the international market, just like they were going to do with the Buu arc of Kai.
Super requires all new writing and animation to be produced from scratch. The only way they would do all that strictly for the international market is if another company was willing to help fund it, like FUNimation or Cartoon Network. International co-productions can and do happen, but they are not the norm, and a franchise like Dragon Ball would probably require a lot of money. Especially if the situation was bad enough for Fuji TV to drop the series.
Though for Fuji TV to drop the series before its planned ending, the ratings would have to be incredibly bad, combined with very weak merchandise sales. If it does at least as well as Kai, I don't think we need to worry about the ratings part anytime soon.

More like Wonder Woman. Even if WW comis series sales/merch are lesser then Flash, everyone knows who is more relevant. Avatar is the highest-grossing movie ever, yet it's literally absent in pop-culture. Etc Etc.Bullza wrote:If Pokémon was Superman and DBZ was Batman then Sailor Moon is The Flash.

90% in first year when it was still making that record box office. When's the last time you heard anyone in real life talk about it? Not a single quote from the movie is used in slang/common language. Now Titanic, that's a movie worthy of highest-grossing title ever that. Both from the same director, yet such difference in their lasting impact and the public's memory of themHellspawn28 wrote:Avatar has been reference in pop culture in over 200 media in the last 6 years. Does anyone know the usual ratings for
Jojo's Bizarre adventure, Naruto SHippuden and Parasyte?.
How does super compared to them?

If I recall correctly, they air at completely different times of the day to Dragonball, which is an early morning Sunday show. Even if you stacked the rating figures side by side, I think you'd struggle to get a meaningful impression of how well "Super" is doing, or not doing, out of them.Black_Liger wrote:Does anyone know the usual ratings for

A show like Naruto, which airs on Thursday afternoons, is a totally different broadcast situation to Dragonball. Television ratings tend to be naturally higher later in the day.
Dragonball Super's ratings have to be placed within context of the time slot in which they fall.

Re: Dragon Ball Super TV Ratings Discussion Thread
It's hard to paint a proper picture with only two episodes worth of ratings to go on, but the final three episodes of Dragonball Kai averaged around 6.4, and the second episode of Dragonball Super was down to 5.6, but the ratings for that particular day were down in general.Black_Liger wrote:I see, ummm for me I don't think it's doing quite so bad, but i don't know how TV Ratings work. lol. One Piece was regularly scoring 2.0 higher than the Buu arc of Dragonball Kai, and it looks like Super is more or less going to perform about the same. The first episode got quite a high rating of 7.9, but it's worth noting that One Piece's ratings were also up to 9.9. Supposing that the given trend is going to continue for Super, I think Toei probably wont lunge for the panic button. From what I understand, they've made a serious commitment with Super to produce at least a set number of episodes, so I think there isn't really any possibility of them cutting it short, it's more of a case that mundane ratings would reduce the chance of them extending it.

I know this is a long-shot, but if Super starts outperforming One Piece, can it be pushed up to its spot?

Re: Dragon Ball Super TV Ratings Discussion Thread
I highly doubt it. One Piece has that slot on lock for at least another decade. It way too popular of a shonen anime to start shifting its timeslot, even for Dragon Ball.Doctor. wrote:I know this is a long-shot, but if Super starts outperforming One Piece, can it be pushed up to its spot?

Looking on ANN it doesn't show up on the rankings often, the few times it did it had a rating ofDoes anyone know the usual ratings for Naruto SHippuden
3.1 - July 2014
3.9 - December 2013
4.4 - December 2013
3.4 - October 2013
3.2 - September 2013
3.0 - July 2013
3.9 - July 2013
It's likely lower now that the manga ended. Under a 3.0.
