Anyways, to prove you wrong about merchandise meaning shit. I am a HUGE fan of One Piece. Do I wear a straw-hat? No. Do I wear anything from the show? No. Why? Because I can acknowledge... key word.... the fact that I would look like a total dumbass... which is what I would look like. I can only gather that the Naruto series sends a signal too their brainwaves and makes a fan boy go "OOH! ANIME!" and pisses themself, thus ending up conforming to dressing up as a wannabe fake ninja. They all look gaytarded. If looking gaytarded means popular... then I will give Naruto applause in that area.
I hope you don't mean Dragonball Merchandice. Rumor has it there is a certain Admin. walking around in a DBZ scouter...
And whoever put that Shippuu-den trailer up, thank you!
SSj Kaboom, I'm right there with ya' a fan of all 3 series and bleach.(I haven't really gotten into Bleach and OP because I need to find the time...and watching through 300 eps. of OP will take awhile...a long while...

)
I understand that people hate the anime and/or manga, but you don't have to insult the fans.(Unless they only know dub

) I love the japanses Naruto manga/anime(I hate the fillers!), but I'm not a total loser(not a TOTAL loser!

)
Naruto is the same as any other series. Some like it, some don't. No matter if you've seen it or not. I have friends who like anime and absolutely hate the Dragonball series. Same with OP and Bleach. It just happens to be that more people seem to like it than hate it, and those who hate it don't get it.(Not that they are stupid, they just don't see what the fans see.)
But I really don't advice bashing it until you at least watch the anime(Not filler! Eps.1-100, and Eps. 107-135)
I'll probably think of more to say soon.

I would probably wear a straw-hat actually... but still acknowlede that I would look like an idiot. Some people who wear the headbands think they are cool. Again, acknowledgement. See the difference?
Telling the truth isn't insulting in my opinion. Everything I type, I view as truth.
I did watch the crap though. I did try the anime... still complete crap.
Naruto though is the only crappy piece of shit I can't get and actually be confused. For other series I don't like I say "I don't get it, but whatever." This is just too fucking horrible for me.
And Payne... I think Kishimoto should stop trying and end it. That I would praise him for.

How popular was the manga/anime fad when DBZ was on air? Not much.
Not here at least, it seemed to suddenly grow after DBZ was off the air. Before roughly 98 or so, Anime was still in the "cult" status. Now the general population seems to have some idea of what it is.
Hmm...*questioning mode*
I really have no problem with any of the three series aforementioned. And I don't think
Naruto is at that level of popularity that Dragon Ball Z once was at. I'm not a longtime fan like everyone else here, but I do remember seeing lots of merchandise being sold in the past, lots of DVDs and VHS, lots of friends talking about it in school, and seeing the little kids mimicing moves (My favorite was seeing a fifth grader do the Galick Gun, Vegeta-quotes and all

) regarding DBZ.
I see some of this stuff already happening for Naruto (Last year, I saw a friend's brother doing one of those handseal things..), but not in the same level of effect as DBZ.
But yeah, it's getting there =)

*dead from laughing* Thanks I needed that.
Ergh, Naruto, oh how it has fallen. It was good when they were actually ninjas working for normal people, instead of crazy element summoning super power players which dominate the entire world and nobody outside the ninja in-groups actually KNOWS about the crazy fights............+ angst, + flashbacks for every single character, + resurrection powers that come out of nowhere........
Anyway, I don't think that Naruto is as popular or will ever be as popular as DragonBall Z. First of all, it doesn't have a prime time slot on TV (At least on YTV in Canada) - it's on past 9pm when only older audiences are watching, unlike DBZ which got top spot after school and pretty much was the FIRST thing everyone I knew in my school turned on to watch everyday. DBZ pretty much opened up the world of today's anime-watching generation and so chances are anyone who's decided to start watching Naruto has seen DBZ. People might prefer Naruto to Dragonball (nukes them) but they still will have some exposure to DB. DragonBall is just way more universal a story too. Naruto is too unnecessarily complicatied and way specific. Not a lot of people can relate to 'nindo' and orphan angst, but a LOT can understand the family dynamics and struggle for peace in DB.
Another thing that shows popularity in my opinion is what you can buy...I think that DragonBall has better merchandise. You can get a freakin working scouter for crying out loud!! That beats a random 'kunai' hands down. Gah maybe they'd come out with better stuff in a couple years but I don't know, I just can't envision it... All I see is the same 3 freakin posters and piles of headbands anyway.

Dudes, I once fucking saw a homeless guy in NYC wearing one. I asked if he knew what it was. He said no and then tried selling it to me (I gave the guy for food and said I didn't want the damn thing).
It was so funny. He was wearing a lot of crap though (basically what he found in dumpsters).
I swear to God if there is one that I did see a homeless dude wearing the headband. I could not make this up. My biggest regret that day was not having a camera.

My friends
are (
or were, their focus became and probably still is Bleach, now) "headband-wearing Narutards!" And I let 'em know it, too! Though I admit, I did the same at one point, myself. But it was a costume party, so it doesn't count.

Holy crap. May I quote you on that? That's too unbelievable, god. I've seen people walk around and go to class wearing the damn headband on the day the dub was set to air here. I quickly wore my Capsule Corp shirt to try and counteract it >_<.

The homeless dude said he found it in a dumpster?
Now I just need to tell my little brother to start looking in the trash if he wants a Sand headband so goddamn much

I just love how this thread has gone completely off-topic in favour of all the anime elitists coming out and using it as an excuse to bash Naruto and make themselves feel superior about themselves and their chosen fav cartoon. Because at the end of the day guys, if you cut through all your reasons and verbage contained in these entire 6 pages, that's all this talk is.
Thank-you to all of you for reminding me why I so despise the culture around anime/manga.

I do not to feel superior, but because I believe in what I say. This being the only series I would do this with was just random luck. Trust me you are speaking nothing new.
And you're welcome for the reminder.

That's an interesting thing. I haven't thought of DragonBall/Z/GT as an anime... ever... Can't say why, I just don't think of it as in that category. It was the 'different' show on TV when in its prime, but now there's just as much japanese animation on TV as there are North American cartoons, maybe that's why I think Naruto and other new anime will never reach DBZ popularity.

And you are also speaking nothing new, especially your "witty" comment about using the manga to wipe your backside with.(note that's sarcasm there)
And yes you come off as acting superior when you start making fun of people who are fans of a series you dislike. Take a step back and actually "read" the stuff you've posted in this thread, and that goes for many others here who have "jumped on the bandwagon". Seriously, you all sound like the same people who for years have made fun of DB fans. I just find it so sad that things never change.....
Quantum: I think you misunderstood my post. I was commenting on how off-topic the last 4 for pages of this thread have become. I'm fine with whatever your reasoning is for thinking Naruto will never be as popular. I also don't think it will ever reach that level of popularity. My point was how ugly and immature this thread has become and has lost it's original subject and that the "cartoon comment" was more in refernece to other series that were brought up.
And just for the record, I'm a fan of both Naruto *and* One Piece.

I wasn't being sarcastic about the wiping. I actually did it a while ago so nothing I say would be a lie. It didn't feel too good though... yea...
I know I sound like an immature asshole... but when did I deny that I wasn't? I literally post without thinking, thus it is an instant thought and not a lie. What I think of at the moment is how I truly feel. If I seem superior... well... I guess that is just a bonus.

Yeeah, it did get pretty immature I guess... Though it is a DragonBall forum so the bias was imminent. Sad truth is most of us are probably just seriously threatened/offended by Naruto's growing popularity. I know I feel that way now.

It does feel like a blow so the bashing just flies out on the keyboard. *ashamed*...
(LOL though... whoever sees Jerseymilk in her Tsunade cosplay would definitely become a fan of Naruto.)

I do have to say, I don't feel threatened or offended. Just disappointed in where the genre of manga and anime has gone. Which is why my New Years Resolution was not to start any new manga/anime series.

Quantum: I'm looking forward to your upcoming Celipa cosplay btw.
EGX, I really think perhaps you should um, make sure you always have proper toilet paper.
And just so you know, I understand where you're coming from with being disappointed about genres and such. There's more moediocre stuff out htere these days than ever. It's a problem when anime has become this popular so there are less really good series that stand out and are around to license. Companies have to settle for whatever is currently not licensed, regardless of quality, a lot more.
I just wanted to point out that everyone was getting a little carried away there and I like to believe that at this forum, we're better than that. I don't want this place to turn into the ANN forums, or even worse GameFAQS. *shudders*
