Heh. I know this is from a week ago and all... but I haven't been here in awhile and I'm catching up. Sue me.

Just wanna say that as a guy who's followed the Japanese version as it was written/aired in Japan (or at least the second half of it) you basically described near verbatim pretty much what I experienced in my high school back in 2000 when the FUNimation dub first hit.

If newer fans who came on board via the English dub (and may or may not have been at one time like the individuals Kid Trunks describes) share this same experience because of the movie... well I apologize if this offends anyone, but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be smiling with karmic amusement.

While that may be the case, there were still plenty of dub watchers who were new to the series and admitted it.

Granted... and I wasn't disputing that.

I was speaking more based on my own personal experiences from way back when. Onikage would know what I'm talking about... and he himself started with the dub.

I'm just stating the irony of how a lot of dub fans who felt that the fans of the original were being too purist and nitpicky are now all of a sudden getting all riled up about how "faithful" this movie may or may not be to it's source material.

Then maybe they'll see what all the fans of the original Japanese version have been talking about.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

I think changing minor plot points (must I point out HFIF?) is a little different from changing major plot devices, such as (from what I've heard):

Oh, some more information:

* Grandpa Gohan is killed by Lord Piccolo for his Dragon Ball, instead of being killed by Goku when he transforms into the Great Ape, as in the manga/anime.
* It appears that Lord Piccolo has nothing to do with Kami (so far, as far as official information goes) and just happens to be this really old guy who's been imprisoned for over 2000 years.
* Krillin has apparently been scrapped, as well as Tien, Puar, Oolong, and a couple other extras.
* Mai, as opposed to working for Pilaf and the Red Ribbon Army as in the anime/manga, works for Piccolo. And for some reason, she can shapeshift.
* Goku's character basis is basically that of the general 'unpopular high school student with superpowers' character (God, thank you Hollywood for making this 'safe' for America *Facepalm*)
* Lord Piccolo will, for some reason, know what Saiyans are and, also unexplained at the moment, will tell Goku that he is a Saiyan (This raises questions such as "At this point in the anime/manga, the fact that Goku is a Saiyan is completely irrelevent and unknown until DBZ, so why is it relevent for the movie?" and "Does this mean Raditz will be scrapped in the DBZ movie?" and lets not forget "Wait, if Lord Piccolo's been imprisoned for over 2000 years, how does he know about Saiyans and the fact that Planet Vegeta was destroyed and that Goku was one of very few survivors?"). Ah well.
* GOKU DUZZNT HAF A TAIL WTF

*checks promotional pictures*
..crap..!

THIS MOVIE WILL SUK NAO

Nah, I'm joking.

However...the tail does become kind of important in DBZ...if they ever get to that movie.

EDIT: I also saw this trailer online.

Its fake, but it looks pretty good.

Also, www.dragonballmovieblog.net has a video up with footage of the Mai/Chi-chi fight.

Just to play devil's (or demon lord's?) advocate-
Sophos wrote: * Grandpa Gohan is killed by Lord Piccolo for his Dragon Ball, instead of being killed by Goku when he transforms into the Great Ape, as in the manga/anime.
The original dub script actually implicated Vegeta in that murder.
* It appears that Lord Piccolo has nothing to do with Kami (so far, as far as official information goes) and just happens to be this really old guy who's been imprisoned for over 2000 years.
We meet Daimao first in the series as well. Kami debuts after the Daimao situation wraps up.
* Krillin has apparently been scrapped, as well as Tenshinhan, Puar, Oolong, and a couple other extras.
Ah well.
All granted. I can bring up a few relevant dub changes. Like the original script having Bardock be a brilliant scientist and inventor of the power ball. Bardock flashbacks making it seem like he was leading Freeza's men. Dr. Gero supposedly being the commander of the Red Ribbon army, with Tao Pai Pai as a top general (in DBZ flashbacks at least).
* GOKU DUZZNT HAF A TAIL WTF
I can swallow that since they are going with a "teen" Goku. So, at that age, his tail would be gone.

I don't know. I mean, I can understand scrapping some things since this is an adaptation and not a translation from television to film, but making Goku a high school student seems... off. Like, completely. Maybe more information will change my mind.
