SRB2Unleased, does this honestly look good to you? That image you posted looks like...garbage.

Cipher wrote:I also think the double features look great, but it's because they successfully removed most of the grain with minimal blurring. Overall, I don't understand not wanting a cleaner image if you can strike a balance like that. The double features and Kai, in my opinion, are the best the franchise has ever looked.
I think the DFs look great. On the other hand, I think Kai looks far too soft. I can certainly respect wanting a cleaner image, but I'd rather have it look as sharp as possible, and if that means leaving the grain on, so be it.
Cipher wrote:Which, while I respect your opinion, I find totally absurd. The GT singles look terrible. Removing grain can be problematic, but excessive amounts are just as bad. There are some episode on the GT singles that look like they were stored in boxes of nothing but magnet shavings and staples. There are literally moments in the first sixteen episodes where it looks like there's a small-scale sandstorm occurring within the borders of Trunks' jacket. It's bad. Just bad.
Call me crazy, but they look fine to me. I never noticed that sandstorm issue at all, and I only have one episode left of the first saga to watch. I will admit, however, that there is a bit of frame damage at the top of the screen at least once an episode. That should have been cleaned up without a doubt, but the grain should be left on IMO.

Remind you I said similar, not exact. Really its just grain removed and sharpened.
GT isn't bad, just sucks ass in comparison to the other 2 animes.

Anything similar to that would still look like shit.

It  I just like crystal clear images. No grain whatsoever. I don't see how that would look like shit. Something similar to Kai's quality.

So basically you just don't like film then? Even 35mm which I think is still the standard film size (Wikipedia says this, and I don't know anything about filming things or movie production) has "grain", as the "grain" is the texture of the film itself.

I realize this. I like Kai's quality and that was used off of what film again?

16mm. Keep in mind Kai is based off of Z footage. If you honestly don't like grain, more power to you. I would just be incredibly mad if FUNimation released something like that.

16mm film as Pokewhiz7 stated, save for a few Namek arc episodes which use 35mm negatives.

Also, while it's okay for you to like what you choose, it's still worth pointing out that the Dragon Boxes are still sharper than Kai:

Color-wise, I actually like the Kai shot better. Sharpness-wise, there's no contest, the Dragon Box.

That's actually what I was trying to say when I think about it, (though I could've just put it that way) Kai's colors, but Dragon Box's sharpness, but that grain issue kinda prevents both.

How does grain alter the colors, other than making it very slightly darker?

I'm just not a big fan of grain, I can live with it, though.

Here is the Dragon Box shot, but with Kai's colors:

For comparison, here's the Kai shot again:

I'm still very curious to see how FUNi's Blu-rays will stack up against the Dragon Boxes, that is, with a lossless comparison.

It's interesting to see the DBOX shot with Kai's colors; huge improvement. Scrubbing all of the grain away does nothing in favor of the image.
