MarcFBR wrote:Yes, but they did it with a show that they honestly didn't know how it would be received, therefore there was no risk in doing something like that.
In most cases, it goes back to 'fans are jackasses.' Even a year prior in interviews guys from both Toonami and Funimation honestly brought up they had no idea how pre-Z Dragon Ball would do if it was brought out in the USA (again...) because it's an inherently different show.
In most cases if you are going to look at fans thoughts its for very specific things, not for the overall 'how it will be done' or 'important choices to be made'.
Going back to DB, the choices for nearly everyone were.... two actors who Funi had already cast in equivalent roles in the past. There is no risk there, because they've given you two choices where they like both. They've already removed choices they don't want.
Most fans don't know what they want, and if they do, they often want something stupid.
This is why I'm emphasizing the need for a poll that FUNimation should take with the fans. If the fans want something, let them look over the list of options provided and have them vote for it. FUNimation could use the information as reference for future releases.
Besides, if fans are jackasses, what makes the people on this forum then?

'reads what I said'
'reads what you said in response'
Somehow I get the feeling you are just skimming what I'm saying...

Oh, I know what you mean in your post, it's also what I didn't explicitly say "let the fans vote on what THEY want RIGHT NOW and have FUNimation release the next DBZ set under that demand immediately". Hence, the reference note.
Basically, in the future, media releases will only continue to evolve with better storage and options for the average Joe consumer. In FUNimation's case, they could use the different types of features that one set of fans would want to see and the features that another set would also want to see. Should discs or online players evolve to the point where more options can be rendered available, FUNimation can put out a release of Dragon Ball Z that can allow different audio, video and translation options to be switched on the fly and allow the viewer to watch their show under their customized preference. Some want DVNR, some want grain. Some will want honorifics, some won't. Some will want Bruce Faulconer music, others will want Kikuchi's score. It would no longer be a case of WYSIWYG and can help reduce fan outcry over the long run.
Just pointing this out.

They could do all that now. It isn't worth the money to do it, because outside of a handful of people, no one cares. And there are less people who would pay for the right to do it.

Then how do you explain the Dragon Boxes, Marc?
How do you explain a release that for all intents and purposes, had no business being released on this side of the coast due to the fact that it would only cater to a minority?
Fans are jackasses but they got the Dragon Boxes. Fans are jackasses but they got a release that only had a demand by a minority that doesn't cater to FUNimation's profits.
BOTTOM LINE: These releases can happen. Don't tell me they can't!

no, not yet. Unless you count the preview at Otakon.

How far out in advance did we see the Orange Brick trailers online? I mean, the first set is out in a little over a month.

Figured I'd make these to show comparisons in the amount of footage. Keep in mind they're not in the correct resolution, and a lot of resizing had to be done, so
only use this to compare the amount of footage, nothing else. The one with Yamcha and Bulma was brightened to make it easier to see.

So is that comparing the orange bricks picture to the Blu-ray?
And on the topic of grain. Since the BD are 1080p, I am very curious to see how the grain will look. Of course there will be more grain than the Dragon Box's but the grain should be 'smaller' so it might look nicer.

Yes, it's a comparison of how much film each shows overall.

I have a strange feeling that years from now people will debating whether the Blu Rays or DBOXs are better.

Until they make DBox Blurays
Seriously, what else can they do with DBZ after this release except release DB and GT in BluRay as well.

As much as I would like the Dragon Box's to be the best looking release, it cant be.
At this point, it looks like the Blu-Rays have no quality disadvantage over the Dragon Box. It is 1080p with corrected colors, removed jitter, with more image visible and without the black border buffer present in some of the Dragon Box episodes. Image quality wise I believe the Blu-Rays will be the best, features/collector value wise, the Dragon Box sets are king.

The dragon boxes are king for sub fans. I'm a dub fan Android although I own the US boxes, I more enjoy the US music.

I don't think they have to be for sub fans only. Just because someone's a dub fan, doesn't automatically mean they prefer the US music.

Just because someone's a dub fan, doesn't even mean they're a fan of FUNi's in-house dub of the series. There are plenty of other dubs.

You're being hard-headed for no reason. You know good and well that when someone's talking about "the dub" on here, 85% of the time they're referring to Funi's in-house dub.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

More like for the show itself. Other than the next episode previews having been moved from after Part B to after the ending, it's the most complete release of the show. FUNimation's release isn't going to have the previews or the proper animation for the openings, endings, or title cards.
