I know that he's an awesome character in general (certainly one of my favorites in the series) and all the more so in DB (highlighting the fact that this isn’t a Z movie at all), but it always seemed to me as if most non-Daizex dub-centric fans generally didn't acknowledge the existence of original DB in the first place.

What I meant was, I wouldn’t normally expect the kind of dub-centric fans I’m talking about to factor in that this is a DB (not Z) movie into the possibility of Kuririn being portrayed “cooler” there than he is in Z because most of them (in my experience) treat DB as if it doesn’t exist, and that everything begins and ends with Z.
SSJ2bardock wrote:Also, I thought the "golden hair club for men" bit was really witty
Yeah, there was a LOT of “Krillin” hatred among the dub fans I knew back during Toonami’s heyday (both online, and especially IRL). Basically the attitude was if a character wasn’t one of the primary villains (like Freeza, Cell, or Buu), or a Super Saiya-jin (or also maybe Piccolo if they’re feeling generous), then said character was a complete waste of screen time, was dragging the show’s level of quality down, and needed to die a horrible bloody death immediately. This included Bulma, Chi Chi, Gyumao, Kuririn, Yamucha, Tenshinhan, Chaozu, Yajirobe, Dende, Kaio, Karin, Uranai Baba, Muten Roshi… you get the idea.Chuquita wrote:Um, I don't really go to other DB boards aside from this one and the Salon, so I have no clue what you're talking about how people outside of Daizex's forums think Kuririn is a waste?![]()
I have a friend who loved his character back when I was a newbie when we were watching Funi's dub on Toonami; and I know a couple people who have done amazing artwork and fics involving him, but maybe they're just in the minority?
Is there really a bunch of dislike for him on other boards?
I know that they’re an extreme example, but what with places like the Atari boards, I thought that this sort of attitude among… a certain persuasion of dub fans was fairly prevalent in U.S. Dragon Ball fandom. Frankly Daizex is the first forum I’ve ever been to were I’ve found so many FUNimation dub fans who actually liked the above mentioned characters to any sort of degree, never mind holding some of them as favorite characters.
Again, DB is a non-factor with the type of crowd I’m referring to; if they even acknowledge the series’ existence to begin with, then they define Dragon Ball as “DBZ when it was gay and fruity before it got cool with Z”.

I agree, DragonBall was a GREAT series. I still think, with everyone complaining about pumping out a new dbz game each year, they should have a DragonBall Budokai that starts with the pilaf saga and ends with piccolo jr.
Everyone then didnt have some huge beam they tossed around, it was a lot more melee so it would be interesting to see how it would play out for a ps3/360 game.
[the same for GT] .... Id be 234567890% more excited for the GT one though.

My own observations point to it having to do with when people got into the series. As a former dubbie from the Saban-era, most of the people I interacted with loved non-Saiyans. But back then, outside of the protagonist, that was just a handful of villains from the first saga. Kuririn has some of his most badass moments in the first Z Saga, and Piccolo shines as well (while exuding the kind of jerk anti-hero attitude that the second group I'll mention attribute to their love of Vegeta). The first half of the Freeza Saga Kuririn had a good amount of time in the limelight.Chuquita wrote:Um, I don't really go to other DB boards aside from this one and the Salon, so I have no clue what you're talking about how people outside of Daizex's forums think Kuririn is a waste?![]()

(I don't associate Dragon Ball with any set of years at all, I associate it with my last three years of high school).
Without having seen DB, we had no backstory on Tenshinhan and Chaozu, but Chaozu did the heroic sacrifice thing and Ten had a cool standoff with Nappa before dying, and they had some respect. Yamcha was seen in the old Pilaf dub, and then whupped a Saibaiman before getting shanked, so people didn't really dislike him much either.
However, many people who were fans then didn't get Cartoon Network when the dub came back (it wasn't a nation-wide basic cable staple like it is now- it was a premium channel back then, similar to Sci Fi when it kicked off). So a chunk of these fans faded out, but a whole slew of new fans were introduced. Just in my high school alone, almost every boy became a DBZ fan to some degree. Our cable company offered CN and most of us were big on Toonami anyway.
These new fans, many of whom didn't previously get up at the crack of dawn to watch cartoons on weekends (and so missed the earlier stuff) met Yamcha and Tenshinhan as dead guys who don't do much (in Yamcha's case, ever again) and Kuririn as the lil guy who dies, comes back, dates the worst character in the series, and basically spends his time cheering on the heavy hitters. Piccolo had begun mellowing out, while Vegeta was taking on the role of gruff guy with attitude.
So what we had were people who, missing out on years upon years of backstory and love on these formerly important characters, met them in their background roles. It was also the rise of the "Super Saiyan Club" as FUNimation put it.
To this group that assings most of their nostalgia to the end of Freeza through to the Cell Saga, Saiyans were generally the dominant badasses and humans were basically there to get beat up. Opinion on Piccolo seemed to fall in between, with a common sentiment being "he's ok... if for some reason you have a problem with just being a Trunks fan."
To be fair, this is the only DB forum I go to these days. I really have no idea what the current state of things is, or how fans who get into the show through reruns or DVDs view these characters.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

I think that the "where's Kuririn" reactions you're talking about are probably because after the villains and the Saiyajin, Piccolo and Kuririn are probably the next two characters that those fans would acknowledge. Kuririn was still fairly prominent in the Saiyajin arc and the Freeza arc, as he was usually involved with the main plots, while the other fighters were either dead or relegated to the background. And to that same audience, characters like Bulma, ChiChi, Gyuumao and Roshi were probably seen as small-time throwaway characters with no significance. So I can definitely picture a "where's Kuririn" reaction from those fans especially when they look at who the rest of the main cast is besides Goku.Kunzait_83 wrote:Yeah, there was a LOT of “Krillin” hatred among the dub fans I knew back during Toonami’s heyday (both online, and especially IRL). That would be totally understandable… except for the fact that I distinctly remember just as much Kuririn bashing going on as with any of those other “lesser” characters you mentioned. Kuririn has gotten ragged on as being a “worthless waste of screen time” and liability to the series’ entertainment value almost as much as Yamucha or any other non-SSJ character… so my question is why are so many people now all of a sudden clamoring for him to be a major presence in this movie? Is it just to have something to bitch over?MyVisionity wrote:I think that the "where's Kuririn" reactions you're talking about are probably because after the villains and the Saiyajin, Piccolo and Kuririn are probably the next two characters that those fans would acknowledge. I guess it could be because it’s now been made pretty apparent to the fans that this is not a Z movie, but again most of the type of dub fans I’m talking about are pretty clueless towards anything DB related in the first place, and certainly wouldn’t give two shits enough that the movie remain “true” enough to the original series that it feature Kuririn as a main character. More than anything else I expected them to be bashing the very concept of this not being a Z movie, wanting instead to get straight to the “good stuff”; SSJ powerups, Vegeta, and long winded rants about power levels.

TV Guide has just informed that the guy playing "Carey Fuller" is currently on "The Bold and the Beautiful".
I looked the guy up; he has muscles.
And not fake muscles like they'll probably give Chatwin, REAL ones: Link here.
Sorry for the long link, I have no idea how to shorten it.
EDIT: Thank you for the help in shortening the link!!
That is a man who works out.
I'm kinda sad now that they've stuck him in the role of a Gary Stu. I bet he wouldn't need a stunt double like Chatwin does.

On hiatus.
If Carey Fuller does turn out to be a character made of pure suck and fail, at least people can pretend it's him getting his head smashed in Final Destination 3.
It's the same director anyway. The actors have all been ripped apart and examined endlessly, why not focus on James Wong for a change?

Hey I've only seen a handful of photos (of questionable quality) and I've been to several web blogs and I've also heard several unconfirmed rumors about this movie. To me that's all anyone would need to be able to come up with a decisive judgment of it's overall quality. I haven't heard the music, seen any clips, or even a teaser trailer but I'm 100 % certain that it will be terrible. (If you SEE what I'm getting at)

Can't we go ONE page on any of these threads without someone whining about the damn school?Chrono Trigger wrote:Goku and Chi Chi are in High School. That is not Dragon Ball.
That part's going to last for like, 15 minutes. There's SO much other stuff that just SCREAMS "old-school DragonBall" that we've become privy to. The battles, the locations, the DragonBall hunt(s), the Tournament, Mutaito, etc...
No, Goku and Chi-Chi did NOT go to high school in the manga (with Chi-Chi, it's not really any big deal; despite being a princess, she always was more in touch with and concerned than her husband about the way the "real world" worked). But this isn't the manga. It's a movie based on the story of the manga. A few things are changed in order to make it work better as a movie. It's a new work all of its own, and people can either take it for what it is and judge it accordingly, or they can go into the whole thing with sour attitudes because they refuse to venture a little out of their narrative comfort zone.
To be honest, you know what? In a weird way, I'm actually starting to look forward to the high-school portions. Because I'm tired of watching, reading, and playing the same story over and over. This, and the whole movie in and of itself, is finally something new. Goku's certainly going to be doing plenty of "Goku-like" stuff in the other 90% of this movie, but I'm curious to see how well or otherwise they'll handle his character in an environment that he's NOT typically in. If they do it right, it could even help to show just how much he doesn't fit in in such a place.
