Concerning that, Piccolo's children were specifically mutated Mazoku-types. If, for whatever reason, God reproduced, he would birth standard Dragon Clan or Warrior-type Namekians. Furthermore, Piccolo was both Mazoku & Namekian. The former is a status that can be gained & lost. God acknowledged when Piccolo was no longer Mazoku due to Raditz's soul passing on to Hell (normally, he'd be in limbo).Lunaar wrote:Piccolo Daimao even showed us that under strange circumstances, he could cough up eggs that hatched wildly different monsters than any Namekian. We should acknowledge that Toriyama most likely had not thought far ahead enough for the demon king to actually be alien with their own planet and culture, but it still doesn't change the fact that it happened (perhaps his eggs were a result of him being "pure evil"?). So that bit of headcanon doesn't necessarily fit what we've seen.

Thanks for the clarification! I forget about that detail all the time, considering how crucial it is to understanding how far Piccolo Jr. has come.Nejishiki wrote:Concerning that, Piccolo's children were specifically mutated Mazoku-types. You know what grinds my gears? The ignorant kids commenting on Yamamoto's Budokai music on Youtube.

You can't blame them for wanting a single, consistently released, quality product for once in their lives.DefinitiveDubs wrote:You know what grinds my gears? The ignorant kids commenting on Yamamoto's Budokai music on Youtube.

Even if the stolen music is fantastic and present up until the last few remaining weeks of the original broadcast, nope - hit 'em now so we can rerelease it all over again with a different, poorly placed, cut-and-paste method of the most respected composer's work in the franchise. It's cool. Rush it out the door, just rush it. Who cares.

What I can't understand is such willful ignorance and disregard for how copyright law and business etiquette work.

A lot of people think that fandom overrides everything. "But I'm a fan, give it to me the way I want it!" Everyone wants the greatest, most authentic, super-tacular, incredible release that will knock their socks off... but end up not buying it because it's too expensive. "But I'm a fan! Your company should take the nosedive in profit and risk a loss on this because I'm a fan and I want it, damn it!"
Re: Things that grind your gears
Regardless of what happens behind the scenes, it affected the product in a negative light. Not everyone has a background in copyright law and business etiquette. This situation was not exactly making headlines outside of Kanzenshuu or anime news networks. People will complain about dropping the ball on a product whether they know what happened or not. Still doesn't change the end result having a glaringly flawed cliff note on the series, on an international level.DefinitiveDubs wrote:I can understand thinking the rushed replacement job sucks and deserves proper care and attention, or a new score entirely.Lunaar wrote:You can't blame them for wanting a single, consistently released, quality product for once in their lives.DefinitiveDubs wrote:You know what grinds my gears? Also hey, it's a kids show. To expect everyone to be on the same page with legal issues on Youtube of all places is asking a lot.

Re: Things that grind your gears
I know this has to do with the discussion over the Blu-ray thread. But I've never thought this was a fair argument. The reason certain releases have failed while others haven't have been entirely due to price point and timing. The few times FUNimation have caved and delivered a decent DBZ home video product, they've practically set them up to fail. Now I'm not saying it's some kind of conspiracy theory, that they did this just to "prove" widescreen, overly-filtered products were the way to go. But you bring up the fandom complaining while it's really the majority, casual people in whose hands our fates lie. When FUNimation successfully revolutionized the way anime was sold with the orange bricks, and fans ate them up as the first way to easily own the entire series, only to announce the Dragon Boxes immediately after... who was going to buy them? Only the people who weren't already satisfied with the orange bricks. So of course they didn't sell as well. And when they announced the Level sets immediately after the Dragon Boxes finished their run, who was left to buy them? The people who JUST spent a few hundred dollars to collect all the Dragon Boxes? Unlikely. The people FUNimation had already convinced that widescreen was the BEST? Even less likely. So naturally, they didn't sell. Conversely, the timing for the Blu-ray seasons was perfect. They let it rest for a few years, and it was the perfect time for an "upgrade" for those who had bought into the orange bricks.TheGreatness25 wrote:A lot of people think that fandom overrides everything. So, no, you can't blame the fans for this. It's FUNimation's fault, plain and simple, for dividing the fanbase in the first place, and for creating a release schedule that guaranteed the quality releases wouldn't do as well as their bargain basement counterparts.

No, no. I was actually responding to how the fans think that their fandom circumvents copyright law. The fans want companies to overlook everything and give them exactly what they want, how they want it, just because they're fans. When, oddly enough, those are the types of fans that don't actually pay for anything. How many of those that complain end up not buying the releases at all? Even if it was dirt cheap, they wouldn't. I feel that the type of fan that shows a lack of real world knowledge versus their own fandom is the type of fan that doesn't contribute a penny to the series to begin with (watches it online, etc.). That's really what I meant by them thinking that fandom overrides everything. I just meant that so many contribute nothing, but expect the companies to bend over backwards to give them what they want just because they're a fan.

You don't need a background in copyright law to understand the consequences of plagiarism. If you copy work in school, you get in trouble. Or worse, expelled. And no amount of original author credit is going to help. I expect kids to at least understand that.Lunaar wrote: Regardless of what happens behind the scenes, it affected the product in a negative light. But because we live in an age where anyone can upload anything they want to Youtube and only get a slap on the wrist for it, kids don't see what the big deal is when you do that in the real world. Hell, plenty of full-grown adults don't get it either.
All I'm saying is that whining about Toei or Bandai-Namco simply making the decision to replace Yamamoto's work in the first place (before even judging the replacement job itself) and acting like he did nothing wrong is laughable.
