Then Goku tells him, "Kuririn I'm proud of you".... Wait when did Goku become Kuririn's father..wha? Great... give him a predominitely fatherly figure persona alongside the "Superheroic Speech" Goku.

Well Krillin is older than Goku so you're right.

Ah. Let me note this down.

It reminded me of Trigun... I thought he was more focused on the potential for a rematch than redeeming Vegeta.

It doesn't matter, concerning the age (though you're right). Wouldn't you feel really weird if one of your friends came up to you seriously & said "I'm proud of you". Honestly, I'd have nightmares. It's kinda the same thing.

Yeah, that's how it should be. Goku wanted to keep him in order to grow stronger & be able to fight him again.

It was fine because Krillin does what he is told! (lol).

But really, I thought it was just average dubbing. No big deal.

It's not a matter of them just being casual friends, it's the fact that they grew up together like brothers, being best friends all through out the series. When Goku's telling Kuririn how proud he is of him, he's telling his best friend, not just some buddy of the Z Warriors. Kuririn and Goku have always had a deep bond, as proven when Goku sensed his death by Tamborine's hands at a point where he couldn't sense energy/Ki. Maybe DBZ isn't a series to think too deeply about because Toriyama didn't have it all laid out from the beginning and whatnot, but I tend to think as deeply as I can about it. When it all comes down to it, some things do matter and some things don't, it all depends on our own points of view.

As for that foreshadowing with Goku, I too think it was a bit too strong considering for all Goku and the first-time-viewing fans know, Vegeta's leaving the Earth for good off to either die in space or live like a king with slave women (a guy can dream). Also, Piccolo was only evil because he was the spawn of Kami's demonic half and grew up around massive battles on Earth, that's not exactly the same issue as a Saiyan warrior. But nonetheless, I think it was well written and acted out, a helpful factor being the phenomenal Japanese music.

You should watch the dub with subtitles, unfortunately I rarely see a similarity.

Agreed. The dialogue that is added or changed rarely adds anything and more often than not dilutes the given scene.

It was funny because Brandy didn't believe me when I told her the original is incredibly different from the English dub. She thought I was being overly anal and that the changes were minimal...then I showed her the new 5.1 dub with Daimao's subtitles. At that point she understood that I wasn't exaggerating ;p

I can't bring myself to watch it because I don't like Goku's voice in the Japanese version. Maybe if Goku could be American and everyone else Japanese... lol.

I know I'm kind of straying off topic and if this has been answered then please tell me:

On the new dvd set I've noticed that occasionally I will see the Japanese Episode title page (the one that comes up at the beginning of each episode giving the episode name). 90% of the time it will be the American version with the seven Dragon Balls...but every now and then it will be the Japanese one. I've tried all the different audio and video options and it still seems to be random. Does anyone know how to change which title image (Japanese or English) you see? Has anyone else run across this? Thanks.

Hmmm... I've never encountered that problem. I use marathon feature, though.

That's due to different angles on the DVD's. If you want the Japanese title cards, pop in the DVD and make sure to choose Japanese in the language section of the DVD. That's what always works for me. Hope that helps. :? If not, my bad.

Fair enough.

Kinda gotta disagree with you there. I thought it was kinda corny when compared to the Japanese version of that scene, but maybe I'm just use to watching the subs, when I see the butchering of dialogue in the dub, a part of me dies knowing that I actually use to watch some of the stuff back in the heydays of my fandom. Meh, to each his own. I just thought it was a particular scene worth noting.

Anyone else notice that dub Goku seems to use this line...a lot and sometimes in correlation with "my [insert word here]"?

(to Kuririn) "I'm proud of you, my friend."
(to Gohan) "I'm proud of you, my son."
(to Piccolo) "I'm proud of you, my old friend."
(to some tree) "I'm proud of you, my stumpy friend."

I remember that episode that's when Goku and the tree joined forces after a fierce rivalry to defeat Nappa, right?

How come the Spanish audio was dropped from DBZ season 1 if they already had it available from the Ultimate Uncuts?

How come Cooler's Revenge is the only video with Spanish lanuage option.

Disc space, probably. These already have three audio tracks without the Spanish audio. They also have twice as many episodes per disc as the UUEs, with better encoding.
