I don't think tone matters if you can't act. You wouldn't want all Jokers to sound like Mark Hamill, would you?huzaifa_ahmed wrote:I might call it a miscast, but it at least seems more accurate than the casting of the time (Drummond-Sabat Vegeta etc) was. I'd never legit cast Sabat as Vegeta in my right mind (though, as it has been, no one's getting fired of course), & Milton James certainly isn't my first choice either (I think I mentioned Kirk Thornton or as you said Crispin would both be much better). But I think his tone is much more naturally similar, is all. They were cast with audio references. Vegeta's laugh is also a dead giveaway of that. Again I don't think it's great by any means, but "it's the thought that counts" I think applies nicely here.8000 Saiyan wrote:I'm sorry, but I just don't get Horikawa vibes in James' portrayal. Have you even heard Horikawa's Vegeta? I don't feel any energy in James' Vegeta. He just feels miscast and too old, something I never felt about Horikawa's Z voice for Vegeta. By the way, I saw your DB dream cast in the Behind the Voice Actors forums and I find your choice for Vegeta questionable. In fact some choices are questionable.
You're so obsessed with the idea of dubs only being good if the English voice actors sound like the Japanese, but aren't very good at choosing actors that actually sound like the Japanese. And I don't mean to offend you by saying that.

Re: Non-thread-worthy discussions
Tone is a part of the performance. Joker can be cast for different reasons in different projects, but if I spoke only French, Spanish, Italian etc., & my Joker sounded dramatically different when I switched the audio, I would probably feel just the slightest bit cheated. Generally speaking I sort of feel that language is, ideally, the only thing that changes with any sort of localization. Incorporating aspects of various character performances into casting, isn't too hard. Hell, Jaleel White & LJB sound pretty reminiscent of Kusao & Chikao Otsuka (yeah, I know he came later, but still notable), & Sega of America IIRC cast pretty much entirely separately from SoJ at the time.8000 Saiyan wrote:I don't think tone matters if you can't act. They just need to sound appropriate for the character, not another actor.

Re: Non-thread-worthy discussions
I just watched DB Kai TFC episode 2 dubbed and something popped up in my head:
Why does Videl find it strange that Saiyaman knows her name when literally everyone in Satan City knows about her?
Also, I just realized that "Saiyaman" is just an accurate translation of "Saiya-jin". Honestly, I would prefer Saiyaman over "Sigh-un" anyday.

Episode 2 of the Super dub reminded me how incorrect this whole "Vegeta is a good dad thing". Yes, he went on a trip. However, he acted like an asshole the entire time and flew away half way through. He's a shit dad.

I made a bet with Alee9977 that Vegeta won't be beaten quickly by an opponent. If I lose, I switch my avatar to Vegeta getting beat by hit. If I win, he switches it to Vegeta holding Black by his hair. This will last a month.

Re: Non-thread-worthy discussions
Here's a non-thread-worthy observation.
I'm watching the old Ocean cast dub and noticed something. I always thought that Jheese had an Australian accent in the dub; he certainly does when Funimation's in-house dub team took over. But really, originally, his accent is more Scottish.
Oh and on a funny note, since I'm on this subject anyway. It's pretty funny that there's a scene where Butta tells the rest of them that it looks like Ghurdo is going to lose and Jheese mocks him for making such an obvious observation. Reacoom steps in and says that he'll take that bet and he bets a chocolate nut bar that Ghurdo will win. Well, Ghurdo does his mind freeze on Gohan and Kuririn and being confident that Ghurdo will win now, Butta requests the nut bar from Reacoom because he won the bet. Basically, Reacoom bet on Ghurdo but when Ghurdo won, they made it seem like he bet against him.

It's kind of creepy to think that Cell is the only genuine character post-Freeza arc in Dragon Ball. Ever since Freeza's defeat on Namek that we've been watching fakes.

Re: Non-thread-worthy discussions
The timeline we're watching isn't the legitimate one. The characters we've watched from the start of the series until the Freeza arc have already died long ago since the split in timelines only occured shortly after Freeza was defeated. We're essentially watching fakes.ABED wrote:I don't understand.Doctor. wrote:It's kind of creepy to think that Cell is the only genuine character post-Freeza arc in Dragon Ball. The timeline we're watching is a direct result of Trunks' endeavours, and he was from the legitimate timeline. It's not fake, it's just an alternate outcome.Doctor. wrote:The timeline we're watching isn't the legitimate one. No, our timeline exists because Cell time-travelled to it, or else we'd be watching the "unseen" timeline, which is the one without Cell present in it. Trunks wasn't from the legitimate timeline, the original timeline is Cell's and the Trunks there is long dead. Our Future Trunks is from a split timeline created when he travelled back in time in the first place.Jinzoningen MULE wrote:The timeline we're watching is a direct result of Trunks' endeavours, and he was from the legitimate timeline. There's a lot of plot holes in the Cell arc regarding the time travel anyway, but Cell's timeline has to be the original one in order for things to work.

Fine, but the same logic applies. Every timeline exists due to the actions of someone in an original timeline, so they're all legitimate.Doctor. wrote:No, our timeline exists because Cell time-travelled to it, or else we'd be watching the "unseen" timeline, which is the one without Cell present in it. Sure, but, in a sense, the original characters we've been watching from the start until the Freeza arc are all already dead. We're merely watching alternative versions.Jinzoningen MULE wrote:Fine, but the same logic applies. That's one way of looking at it, but it's hardly the objective one. Whether it's the future or present version, or any other timeline's version for that matter, Goku is Goku, Gohan is Gohan, Bulma is Bulma, Trunks... well, he's an exception, but I don't see why our perspective not being the original version of events matters,Doctor. wrote:Sure, but, in a sense, the original characters we've been watching from the start until the Freeza arc are all already dead. It doesn't matter, it's just slightly dark and kind of unsettling when you think about it.Jinzoningen MULE wrote:That's one way of looking at it, but it's hardly the objective one. Re: Non-thread-worthy discussions
It's definitely a thought I'll occasionally have, too. I'm always curious if Goku & company ever worried about Future Trunks never returning. Then again, he didn't have to either. Both the original & parallel Future Trunks wanted to report their success. I suppose they assumed everything was peachy since he had no particular reason to fail in his defeat of Future No. 17 & Future No. 18. It's Future Cell who was an unknown factor for both of those worlds.
Re: Non-thread-worthy discussions
I get Doctor's point and it seems a little pedantic to argue about it.

Sucks, doesn't it? lol And to think, the original timeline could still have a chance...
