Must be a sad day for the people who used episode 5 as if the whole series looked like that...
Now when we talk about the worst-looking episode of Dragon Ball, we can safely go back to Z/GT and Uchiyama's little gems.

Anyway, the new One Piece movie had the release date revealed: July 23rd. That's almost a whole year after the first announcement last August, which is further confirmation that even if a new DB movie is actually announced this month (that "big news" we will get), it's safe to assume it won't premiere before next November/December.

They didn't really fix that one, did they? ^

Anyway, It's nice to see some changes, but wasn't great changes at all, IMO. It could be better, I guess.

EDIT: They could add more details to Beerus too in some scenes, still the same model.

It's an in-between frame. For the sake of fluidity to the animation some shots are gonna be off model.

That scene actually was changed, though. With the blur they added, and assuming they timed it a little faster, it might give a very different impression than before.

Correct. You can't even see it in motion. There was no need to change that one frame. It's the number one example of why cherry-picking inbetweens is totally useless. It's not an accurate reflection of the episode, at all.

Super's intro has a great action cut, but if you go frame by frame, you can easily pull things like this and this. Why would you, though? It doesn't matter. You can't see it. It's about the illusion of motion.

I wonder if episode 5 is the only episode who got this treatment.

I mean, I understand if it is, considering Toei got a huge amount of hate over it and all of the other episodes actually look finished, but it'd still be cool to see what changes they'd do to the other fight scenes.

How many episodes are on this BluRay?
Now we just need something like this done to episode 14 (SSJ Goku vs Beerus) and with the great animation it already had... Just imagine!

I'm pretty sure whoever took these shots just snapped them at the exact same timecodes. The timing probably changed due to the corrections (there are other examples of this happening, too), so Beerus is mid-headturn when he took the shot. I imagine the final key-frame is still in tact.
Makes sense, hope that's the case.

I'm curious, does anyone know if they fixed up the footage of the original broadcast of DBZ for VHS/DVD release? (Aside from reformatting to fit aspect ratios)

Well, it didn't actually ever GET a home release until the Dragon Boxes in the early 2000s. Near as I can tell, everything's exactly the same as the broadcast material in there.

The only thing I can think of are some unfinished animation changes to (I think it was...) "We Gotta Power" that kei has detailed somewhere, but that was also during the broadcast itself just a few episodes later, and not for the home release.

No, they didn't. None of the original materials would have still existed in the early 2000s for it to be possible to change the animation, especially since by then Toei Animation was no longer using film and cels outside of a few films.

The movies did have a home release on VHS back in the day though, right? Was there ever anything corrected there, or was a film's production process different enough that they tended to have things exactly how they wanted them by the time they were released?

I don't think they're gonna change anything in #14. Fluidity over lack of detail was more akin to a stylistic choice than schedule issues, unlike the fifth episode. #5 was finished now, because the episode wasn't supposed to look like that to begin.

I'm thrilled with these improvements. Thank You Toei, that's much, much better. Time to close the book on #5's poor animation now.
So happy now, and can't wait for the FUNi dub.

My set arrived this morning, and I took some photos of the box and booklet and stuff.
It's highly unlikely that I'll have time to watch any of it today, but we already have plenty of screenshots of Episode 5 anyway. I don't know what else might be worth reporting, other than the menus.

I'm impressed they touched up those poor shots. They really should have been like this the whole time. Doesn't change for me that the choreography and fight scene sucks balls here, but at least it's prettier.

I suppose when Super gets broadcasted in other countries we will see the Blu-Ray episodes with fixed animation?
