Finally popped in the first disc, and wanted to chime in with an observation. I just finished watching Vegeta's death, and it hit me about half-way through that this was the first time I'd seen this episode with Steve Simmons' subtitles. His translation helped me realize just how powerful an episode this was; the dialogue and Ryo Horikawa's delivery are simply amazing here. For the first time (possibly the only time) I actually felt for Vegeta, which is a very weird thing considering I've been watching this show subbed for so long. To have new emotions while watching something that's already familiar struck me so much; I'm curious to see if anyone else here has had a similar experience.

I did indeed. In fact, there were several subtle things I got out of seeing this in Japanese for the first time. And I'm probably stretching a bit with interpretation, but this is just the impression I got while watching this. Super Saiya-jin to Vegeta seems like a bedtime story he heard every night, but at this point he's truly beginning to believe it is his birthright. He feels he's so close that he's become obsessed with it. So in the episodes after Dende heals him, and then Freeza proceeds to beat the ever-living daylights out of him, it was almost like watching a child being told that Santa Claus isn't real. Vegeta did seem very childlike at that point, and not in his usual spoiled, whiny way but just a very disillusioned, shattered child. And then when Goku shows up, Vegeta's spirits lift immensely. For this one moment, it doesn't matter that the Super Saiya-jin isn't him--it's enough for Vegeta for his belief in it to be validated.

But the moment that was the most powerful to me is right after Freeza shoots Vegeta through the heart, and Goku replies that he didn't need to do that. Vegeta's reaction to that probably fit what I'm describing to a T. It was that entire emotional cycle I described in the last paragraph in one line of dialogue: "Aren't you a Super Saiya-jin?" Just the way it was delivered. It was his faith almost crumbling again. He needed Goku to be a Super Saiya-jin. And, again, just like a child, when he saw Goku behaving in a way contrary to what he believed a Super Saiya-jin was supposed to be, it was like the first time a child realizes his parents or hero is fallible.

So, yeah... that's the impression I got. Thanks, Dragon Box!

Beautifully written. This is one of those truly great moments in the story and it's great how Horikawa was able to bring it alive, not just as he did in Dragon Ball Z, but also in Dragon Ball Kai (in which he had to have actually been crying, the performance there was probably even better than in Dragon Ball Z).

Although now the "I'm not Santa Claus? Kakarrot's Santa Claus?! Yaay!! Wait Santa, we're your Santa-ness?" jokes must commence. :p

Haha, I just found something very interesting!

On Disc 14, on the main menu screen with the scouter numbers... looks upside down. You can see the words "Meow" and "Big Kitty".

Sneaky FUNimation. :D

I think Tom Dubois of "The Boondocks" said it best for me when FUNimation announced the release of the domestic Dragonbox, after buying all of the Season Sets: "MOTHERFUCK!!! SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT, PRICKS, SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIIIIIIIT!"

Now that I found that, I have to go back and look at the previous discs to see if they put more hidden words. Maybe they got a "F**k you" in there somewhere. :P

is that $32.99 for all 3 together or apiece?
Anyone with common sense can figure that out...

Just saying.
The way it was said; I thought that all 3 Dragon Boxes together could be picked up at FRY's for 32.99. Ofcourse I though it was 32.99 apeice.

Well reading this page is kind of disappointing...

Also if FUNi really did add those things to the menu or whatever that is kind of a dick move.

Well, this isn't the first time the DBoxes have had a subtitle typo, but this is surely the funniest!

Honestly, the menu numbers - kind of funny. Someone was stuck with the boring job of putting all those in. You have to allow them some kicks.

Wow. That's hilarious. I hope no uptight mothers see the WANG and then try and get the Dragonboxes off the shelves.

Yeah, I'd gotten so used to seeing that mouthless, lineless Goku all over the place (including in my own videos) that it's almost weird to see it correct. And also glorious!

Just got mine in the mail yesterday (Tuesday), and I order from Rightstuf last Thursday with economy shipping:)

P.S. All I have to say about Rightstuf's shipping is "Damn it's fast."
