They also went their own directions with translations around that time.

Goku (original): "Even if I raise the Kaio-ken to x5, it still won't have any effect on him!!!!"

Goku (VIZ): "But my only chance--is to increase my power!!!!"

Vegeta (original): "Shall I tell you something good?... When a Saiya-jin becomes an Oozaru, their battle power becomes 10 times what it is as a human!!!!"

Vegeta (VIZ): "A Saiyan is most powerful in its ape form! A Saiyan...that still has its tail!"

It's things like this that completely ruin the Viz translation for me. I was really hoping they would re-translate the manga, but apparently not.

Somehow, the US seems to consider that a retranslation is not worth it.
It's very weird, because they keep constantly enhancing the translation in France, the whole manga was completely retranslated and even with that retranslation the on-going Kanzenban (Perfect Edition) release is still bringing additionnal touch-ups to that retranslation to make it even closer, to try and reach the "absolute closest" to the original they can possibly have.

A retranslation is enough in France to motivate a full re-release. This happened with Dragon Quest and is now happening with Sailor Moon: the manga is still the same size and still black and white, but entirely re-released just to retranslate it all and make it close to the Japanese text this time (and put back the original cover and reading direction from right to left if it wasn't there in the first edition). Even Saint Saiya is being re-released as the Perfect Edition, again fully retranslated.

So it's very weird because with the US being kind of "the biggest player" in the game, you would expect them to not hesitate a second and aim for the biggest quality big time to create THE perfect international version, even to the smallest detail. Exactly the kind of effort they're making by publishing the Color Manga pretty soon after the Japanese release and with a size that will actually surpass the Japanese release (therefore even trying to improve on the original product). But somehow, a retranslation seems to be out of their league or simply not interesting to them. This is very weird when it's actually one of the primary things they should focus on and one of the primary things that would attract fans to re-buy it all.

Have their been previews for the Buu saga? I'm not sure if I missed them or not and curious to see what SSJ3's eyes will be like, seeing as in this release SSJ eyes are blue.

^ Yes, there are already a few previews available for Boo that fellow members around here found on Manga Broadcast if I'm not mistaken.
I don't remember if we have a close-up of Super Saiyan 3 or not, but the form probably keeps the same blue eyes albeit with a pupil inside, and we also know the aura is golden like the Super Saiyan 2 aura (like the regular and rush auras: bright yellow on the sides, white at the center), with golden sparks.

Meanwhile, the first previews from the Cell arc are up on my previous post. Enjoy! 8)

Afro Bulma with purple hair seems...weird to me.

Also is it me or does Trunks have no pupils while in SSJ against Freeza, cause he kept them in the History of Trunks special.

^ He doesn't have pupils once in Super Saiyan.
It's the same in the special chapter, but in one panel (the first to show him as a Super Saiyan from close range), Toriyama left his pupils, so they were kept in the Full Color Manga as well.

That kind of "keeps his pupils for one panel/shot" mistake also happened a few times in the anime if I'm not mistaken, including with Gotenks in Battle of Gods when he turns Super Saiyan.

Cant say thats surprising.

Would have been interesting if they went with the red eye look we got from the color pages of previous releases.

Has Gohan's early Boo arc gi been shown yet? I'm curious if they're going/went with purple, blue, or green.

^ Possibly, but you'd have to be lucky. If I'm correct, Manga Broadcast shows previews for each digital volume, which is how members around here could get glimpses of things like the Super Saiyan 3, or hints of the Kanzenban ending published on the main page.

But only the first few pages of a volume are shown as a free preview if I remember well, so unless that outfit for Gohan appears in the first chapter of one of the Boo volumes, I'm afraid you'll have to wait for Mangapolo to finish the whole Cell arc and proceed to the Boo arc.

My guess is that it will be anime-colored, because that's pretty much the way they seem to handle things: if Toriyama had no definitive preference and made the character/costume in many different colors throughout various illustrations without clearly repeating one of his color schemes more than the others, they usually choose to settle it by applying a color scheme close to the anime, although minor differences might appear to distinguish it a bit. So I'm curious to see if that will apply to that costume for Gohan too, since it does match that "no decisive Toriyama version" situation.

The shading on these are all bland to me. There's just a random dark shade put on the characters with no variation, making every angle have a different light source. They seem to go over Toriyama's shading in the colored chapters though, which I do like a lot.

With the new chapters uploaded (341 and 361), you can now see the following:

- While being sucked into Cell's tail, the rich man looks a bit like a zombie.

- Cell's insect form has blue eyes, much like all of Gero's latest creations. This would likely carry over to his second form, with the blue being narrowed down to actual irises, but the blue then heats up to red during the final transformation.

- Piccolo's new energy is pure white, like that of the Super Saiyans. Therefore, Krilin wasn't exagerating when comparing the two races as having the same change and therefore giving them a similar name: Piccolo undergoes the same kind of transformation with his energy having the same kind of "Super" (pure white) change of nature and so, by going through the same name logic, Krilin is fully right to call him a Super Namek. However, no physiological change can be seen on Piccolo himself, perhaps simply because Nameks have no hair. However, the anime saw things differently and gave Piccolo a distinct kind of aura, making it a distinct kind of change.

This brings an interesting question if we choose the full-color manga interpretation: what if the "Super" transformations were not exclusive to Saiyans? What if several races had that ability to reach a higher state by changing the nature of their energy to make it that same specific "Super" energy (pure white in the full-color manga), and potentially being called "Super [insert name of race]"? Under specific circumstances, strong warrior races across the universe (this excludes Earthlings among others) might all have access to a "Super" transformation changing the nature of their energy in the exact same way and having the exact same effects...

Well, no, okay, that's a bit too farfetched. But at least, I like the fact that the staff chose to take Krilin's remarks in account to effectively make Piccolo's new form a striking equivalent to Super Saiyans that can be called Super Namek, even visually.

With the new chapter previews (366, 372, 373 and 377), enjoy the new colors for the Room of Spirit and Time, Cell's second form (among other differences, note that he already gains the red eyes of his perfect form thanks to C-17) and - less importantly - Trunks' hair bandage is now white.

Nice!

Also, I just noticed that you skipped the whole 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai arc, and chapters 250-316 from Freeza arc. Why?
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

^ It's just that I don't proceed in a specific order, so I just do the previews in any order I choose to showcase iconic moments or good examples of color differences.

This is because Mangapolo releases chapters much faster than I can create previews. So rather than doing it all in order and being terribly late, I just keep up by skipping parts that I'll do later.

I skipped the Tenkaichi Budokai because they had started doing the Saiyans and I figured people wanted a glimpse of that as a priority: the Z/Kai part is the most famous part of the story, and given the upcoming Full-Color release, I thought people would want to see what those chapters were like to see if they would buy the physical release or not.

As for the Freezer arc, I started it but again, it went so fast that I couldn't keep up, so I ended up skipping to the big finale with the Super Saiyan and the Apocalypse to showcase the major color differences with the anime version for that iconic final battle depicted in various medias for years.

Basically, rather than having it all complete little by little, I spread the previews so that they cover a maximum of moments/characters/forms so that we get a first glimpse of it all. Then later I can go back and fill in the blanks for a more detailled overview. But in the process, I had to skip the Tenkaichi Budokai and the Freezer arc much more than I initially wanted. They'll be done later.
