"Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
Episode #2:
So, Shida is indeed being credited for 絵コンテ (e-conte; storyboard), just like the first three series did. This should make it a lot easier organize who did what.
Tate Naoki and Hayashi Yuuki took home the top spots under key animation. Both are talented animators but it's pretty clear this episode was very rushed. I hope they get to redo their cuts for the Blu-ray version. I'm guessing Hayashi did the aircraft scene while Tate did Beers' fight with Leader. That fight suffered the most from a lack of drawings.
Ishikawa Osamu is the only credited animation supervisor. Ishikawa did an okay enough job. I have to wonder if Hayashi and Tate didn't handle a lot of the cuts with Vegeta looking cool and Ishikawa simply didn't correct?
It seems like Ide Takeo will not be the only chief animation supervisor, either. Tsuji Miyako was a key animator for the Opening animation, so it makes sense she would participate in the series. I wonder if Ide and Tsuji will trade off or if we will see a third chief animation supervisor next week?

Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
Ide Takeo was once again the chief animation supervisor. I'm beginning to think that Ide and Tsuji will trade the role on-and-off like the two character designers of World Trigger are.
Toei cartoons were working with very little staff this week. Go! Princess PreCure Episode #23 was Aoyama Mitsuru episode with Hoshino Mamoru and Hamano Yuu'ichi doing BANK animation, World Trigger Episode #38 was the husband-and-wife duo of Koizumi Noboru and Izumi Kyouko, and Dragon Ball Super Episode #3 was Yashima Yoshitaka and Aizu Satsuki with assistance from unnamed TAP animators. One Piece Episode #702 got six key animators, though.

One Piece would still be afforded 6 key animators. >_>JulieYBM wrote:Ide Takeo was once again the chief animation supervisor. I'm beginning to think that Ide and Tsuji will trade the role on-and-off like the two character designers of World Trigger are.

*Can't help being jealous that Toei treats OP special, but it's not so bad this year because at least Go!Pri on the whole looks better than HaCha did last year. Toei's back to giving Precure love again after the partial-mess that was HaCha, and that I appreciate.*
I realize it was on NicoNico, but Crystal also ended this week (which frees up some people?).

Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
So who do you think drew that scene of Goku bieng chased by Kaio and his pets scene Jacob? I really thought something was wrong with my connection while watching it.
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
And was it done that way on purpose? The speed at which Gokû was running was hilariously absurd.
I mean, it was funny because he was running so awkwardly slowly, I enjoyed watching that in motion, but I don't know if it was intentional or not.

Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
Yeah, staff will be available. I'm not sure who has been working on Sailor Moon Crystal, though. My guess is that Sakai Munehisa probably won't do anything for a while. He really got screwed over hard. No time, no talent, and no money to produce anything. The poor bastard. I wouldn't be surprised if he never works for Toei again.
There's a One Piece television special airing next month, I'm sure there is going to be some staff shortages in the mean time. Assuming there isn't a stealth One Piece movie in production then Dragon Ball Super should see some new staff come in around October, assuming the new Kindaichi series doesn't throw everything out of whack.
It's hard to say who drew the scene with Kaiou chasing Gokuu. I got the sense it was supposed to be a slow, silly shot so the more 'careful' moment of Gokuu's legs worked out just fine in that sense. It was certainly nothing special and most certainly intended to buy some time. Yashima is the first credited animator, so that means he likely did the majority of the cuts. Most of the episode looks pretty similar, so I'm tempted to think Aizu Satsuki and TAP only did a few shots with little if any movement and the vast majority was all Animation Supervisor Yashima Yoshitaka's work.

Many thanks!
I desperately hope there isn't any stealth One Piece movie. That would ruin pretty much everything Toei's working on that isn't One Piece.
I don't want to get upset at One Piece. I like it ok, but not as much as I like Precure, and nowhere near how much I like Dragon Ball.

It wouldn't be nearly so bad if the movie was worked on by only a few animators and over an extended period of time. Alas, that simply isn't likely to happen.

I've seen this other places too, but Toei really stretches themselves too thin.

Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
I understand the sentiment that it's not "fair" for Toei to blatantly favor One Piece over their other shows, but considering that One Piece is consistently their highest-rated (animated) show, and has been for years, it would be downright bizarre if they didn't throw it a few bones here and there.
...Plus it's not like they don't cheap out on One Piece when they can get away with it. Back in 2007/2008 they decided to switch from a 1 minute 50 second opening + 1 minute ending for the credits to a 2 minute 30 second opening, presumably to save a whole 20 seconds worth of animation per episode.

The animated series for One Piece doesn't get special treatment. PreCure is the closest thing to a special series at Toei.Theophrastus wrote:I understand the sentiment that it's not "fair" for Toei to blatantly favor One Piece over their other shows, but considering that One Piece is consistently their highest-rated (animated) show, and has been for years, it would be downright bizarre if they didn't throw it a few bones here and there.

The change to a longer opening was probably motivated by avex wanting to merely push one group and song at a time. The use of the series overview and longer recaps are how the staff save money and resources, but they inevitably use that saved money for when they have a good action animator.
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
With World Trigger ending in September, i wonder if they could bring back Noboru Koizumi to Dragon Ball? He would be a worthy addition.JulieYBM wrote:Toei cartoons were working with very little staff this week. Go! But with Sailormoon, Soul of Gold and World Trigger ending, i wouldn't be surprised if Toei announces another new show beside Kindaichi.
The actual length of the episodes didn't change at all. When they removed the ending, the time spent on it was added in the longer opening + narrated "New World" intro, simple as that. Long opening + intro = short op + ending.Theophrastus wrote:Back in 2007/2008 they decided to switch from a 1 minute 50 second opening + 1 minute ending for the credits to a 2 minute 30 second opening, presumably to save a whole 20 seconds worth of animation per episode.

Point taken. I was kinda responding to Chuquita's posts, but ended up trying to cite an example that wasn't actually very relevant . My bad.Araki wrote:The actual length of the episodes didn't change at all. Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
I would love to see Koizumi and Izumi return to Dragon Ball. If they could handle every seven or eight episodes themselves I would be very happy. Koizumi's action cuts are a lot of fun in World Trigger, certainly better than I remember them being before.
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
I'm curious, any idea who animated the shot in episode #2 with the alien vs dinosaur?
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
Hayashi Yuuki, from what I've heard. The fire and explosion effects were pretty specific, so it makes sense it was him.Doctor. wrote:I'm curious, any idea who animated the shot in episode #2 with the alien vs dinosaur?

El_Aleph found the staff for the upcoming episodes.

King Ryuu is writing Episode #6. Shida Naotoshi is the storyboard artist of Episode #7.

Summaries~! (☆▽☆)
Is King Ryuu a good/fun writer? 6 is the possible-bingo episode. I've heard you mention his name before, but I can't recall the context.
This is more motivation for me to get faster at translating, because if I was faster I could have this read and then go to sleep where instead I fear it'll take too long and it's already late at night so I'll probably peruse the Vegeta-reaction-faces episode summary and look at the rest tomorrow. >_>

Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion
Oh, damn, Episode #6 is storyboarded and directed by Hatano Morio! Hatano is the series director of Saint Seiya Omega and is one of the best directors at Toei Animation. I really liked the layouts in Disk Wars: Avengers Episode #17.
