This hurts my enjoyment a lot because there's only so much the world can revolve around one character before it gets boring to me.
What do you want the next DragonBall series to be like?

The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

But there aren't just Batman comics in that series, and it's not just the same Batman.ABED wrote: Mon Aug 26, 2019 6:54 pmTo which I will bring out the trusty ol' "you might as well complain about Batman comics always being about Batman."Kokonoe wrote: Mon Aug 26, 2019 6:49 pm For me I feel like I've just...seen enough of him. Yes, in Batman comics, there are just Batman comics. I also don't know what you mean by the last point. Goku is the main character of DB. Changing main characters, especially this deep into the story is a bad idea from a marketing and story stand point. Stories are about characters, not the world. If you want the same world but a different story, then demand a spin-off. Goku's story, which is without a doubt what DB is, without Goku is a terrible idea. But there aren't just Batman comics in that series, and it's not just the same Batman.

You knew what I meant. There are various characters in the Batman universe with their own comics. It's still taking place in Batman's world even if the title is different.ABED wrote: Mon Aug 26, 2019 7:01 pmYes, in Batman comics, there are just Batman comics. But there aren't just Batman comics in that series, and it's not just the same Batman.
And there are various different incarnations of Batman where who they are is vastly different. That in itself is interesting, Goku being the exact same thing all these years later is not, for me.
Here's one major difference. Unlike Batman, the show isn't called "Goku". The show in essence is about those Dragon Balls and the stories around them leading to a call to their wishes. Every story in the series concludes with them in some way, or the goals are shaped around them. When the series gets name changed to "Goku" then maybe.I also don't know what you mean by the last point. Goku is the main character of DB. I'm not convinced that Dragon Ball requires Goku to stay afloat. If you prefer him and think that, that's fine. But I really don't. And yes, I would absolutely love spin-offs. But there are no spin-offs so I am stating what I would like from the main series.

I didn't know. I was talking about BATMAN comics, not his supporting cast that had their own books. Changing main characters late into a run is a bad idea.Kokonoe wrote: Mon Aug 26, 2019 7:19 pm You knew what I meant. There are various characters in the Batman universe with their own comics. Yes, it's a franchise, not a story, but it's still BATMAN at the center of the story. DB was never meant to be a story with an infinite middle. They should end the story. And by different incarnations, do you mean different characters who took the identity (e.g., Jean Paul Valley and Dick Grayson) or the different authors' takes on the character? And there are various different incarnations of Batman where who they are is vastly different.
That's a MINOR difference. It is about Goku, that's undeniable. It's not about the damn McGuffins! The DB's aren't the focus of the story. It's about Goku and his journey to be the best he can be, not his quest to constantly find the DB's. The second story arc (the 21st TB) wasn't about the DB's. The Piccolo Jr. arc wasn't about them either. Neither was the Cell arc or Buu arc. They are McGuffins, that's it. There are numerous significant DB stories that don't involve the DB's. A story doesn't need to be named after the main character to be about that character. Here's one major difference. Unlike Batman, the show isn't called "Goku".

A characters name doesn’t have to be in the title to achieve main character status. Goku is and always has been the main character of Dragon Balls (excluding a very brief trial with Gohan that didn’t last that long)Kokonoe wrote: Mon Aug 26, 2019 7:19 pmYou knew what I meant. From front to finish, Dragon ball is a story about Son Goku's journey. The Dragon Balls are just what got it going.

You could definitely do Dragon Ball without Goku. Whether it's a good idea or not is another story. Who knows how the audience might react? Maybe they would strike gold with some new character or plotline that reshapes the entire series? I guess you could call it a radical idea, or unwise, but at the very least doable.

Yes, you can literally make DB without Goku, but if the series is so radically different, why not just make a spin-off?MyVisionity wrote: Mon Aug 26, 2019 10:24 pm You could definitely do Dragon Ball without Goku.
