Just a few choice clips for those of you still unsure of Hollywood's ability to pull of a live action adaptation of Dragon Ball; most noteably, the questions of special effects.
Ah, I love this movies...

Oh, we've already got that covered. A $100,000,000 budget? That'll probably take care of it for sure.Sleven wrote:Kung Fu Hustle

I'm not a picky or easily upset person. Don't let the joker persona I usually have fool you; I'm very reasonable and logical about things, even and especially with the things I like or make my hobbies.
So I realize that when making movies out of things like comic books and cartoons, things often need to be changed and adapted, sometimes in direct contrast to their original material, in order to make a good overall movie. Because I realize such, I was and am able to deeply enjoy such movies, especially, to be specific, Spider-Man and Transformers (I will completely ignore and disregard any and all bashing of Transformers, as it's ridiculous. The cartoon was very well-represented, the acting was great, the transformers themselves were awesome both visually and in character, and the amount of humans DID NOT overshadow the Transformers. My theater got it bumped over to us this weekend, and I almost got in trouble from spending too much time in its theater watching it a couple minutes at a time. It's a good, if not great, movie, and anyone who thinks or says otherwise is just flat-out being overly anal and unappreciative. I mean, c'mon, Transformers fans, they even got freakin' Peter Cullen to voice Prime! What MORE do you people want?!).
As such, when the DragonBall Z movie comes out, I know at least I will be able to enjoy it. I'd deeply encourage as many of you as possible to at least try to adopt a similar attitude. This movie will likely be the best thing to happen to our favorite series in a long time, and I feel sorry for anyone who lets themselves have it ruined for them because they greeted the whole concept with a crappy attitude.

In my personal opinion it is a good idea to be a little shall we say, apprehensive about accepting this movie. I am saying not to judge it before you see it, but go with a open (read not dead) mind and accept what flaws there will be. Dear God, in order to do what I just mentioned you probably going to need lots of alcohol.

I'm unsure how this will work out. Unlike something like Spiderman or Transformers, Dragonball Z seems much less palatable for a live-action treatment, and much more oriented to martial arts. They could easily turn this into into a bad kung-fu movie by relying the SFX or fighting to carry the film
I hope the characters get enough screentime to actually have a decent amount depth. I also hope that the director hires real actors rather than look-alikes. Of course it all really comes down to whether or not a decent screenlay for these films came out of all this downtime. Done well, this could renew waning interest in the series.

Definitely not. I don't see how an American film will convince Toei (which will have probably nothing to do with it) to make a new series for a market that they won't be reaching towards. Also, here's something to chew on: the first Spider-Man movie got to the point that a completely new TV series was made (granted, it was short-lived, but it still came out). The same goes for the Transformers movie-- apparently, yet another series is gonna come out on TV in the near future. So... do you think that once/if this movie comes out and does well enough, an entirely new DB series will be made?
I'm still finding this a bit sceptical. No details as of yet, and so far only ONE newspaper has reported on this. Given that this is Dragon Ball Z we're talking about, I'd expect a few other places to report on this.
If this really happens though, I seriously hope they do NOT include Over 9000.
I don't see how a live action Dragon Ball film would get made without Toei having some sort of input. It's not like Hollywood can just take a property and use it as a basis for one of their films without having to pay out a lot of money first. Hell, even the Dragon Ball name has got to be paid for. Not to mention licensing fees for some of the character names, maybe even some attacks, royalties etc.

I dunno, if the movie industry can make our favourite superheroes transcend to the big screen well (unless you make sequels

P.S. If it's a hit I will eat my shorts.... and by shorts I mean a box of delicous cookies.

So what we're expecting is something that will be sweet for making music videos, but not worth downloading illegally?

Ya movies that were made by the Hong Kong film industry. *Not* Hollywood. Different culture and hence different approach to things.Sleven wrote:Kung Fu Hustle

Erm... no.Rocketman wrote:The entire point of any movie is to make money.Maphisto86 wrote:Yet, I just feeel it in my gut that this is going to blow chunks just for the sake of "let's make a live action version of Dragonball because we can...and to make money".
Great film makers do it because it's their passion, and they want to entertain people. If I were making a film, the money wouldn't be my first concern; it would be entertaining the audience.
Let's just hope the people making this movie love Dragonball.
Which they probably don't. And in this case, it... will most likely be only about money.

The only problem with that is that unlike American comics, Dragon Ball's characters don't look like people you'd see in ordinary life. At all. And as advanced as movies' special effects have gotten, I also agree with the lot of you who say that it would take quite the budget to pull off all the crap that goes down in the DBZ universe.b_boult wrote:I wonder if the movie will have Spiderman style opening credits with actual manga art? On a different note, in recent movie adaptations, we've seen a couple of things re-made so as to not look as cheesy (ie: Green Goblin's tights changed into this robot-looking outfit). Assuming that this movie will cover the Saiyan Saga, do you think the Saiyan armor will be altered somewhat? Aside from the massive shoulder blade things, it doesn't look that "outdated" as far as alien outfits go (well, okay, maybe the blue tights will be changed, too).
Eh, I don't really care either way. I'd just be pleased to be able to get some kind of DBZ product without having to resort to the internet. At the least I'd probably get something like a live action Vegeta figure just so I can set him next to all my other Vegeta figuresJerseymilk wrote:One thing I think people are forgetting about with all this excited talk over new merchandise. You realize it'll be "movie version" merchandise mainly right? You'll have action figures that look like the actors, not like the original manga. Same thing for shirts, posters, etc. Just wanted to point that out so people aren't too disappointed when they don't a bajillion products of like chibi plushies and stuff. ^^;

Time skips have been done in movies before, so I think that will be the least of their problems.Alice wrote:Wouldn't this be hell to cast, though, if it was done as condensed sagas? You'd have to get some really good look alikes to do the age fast-forwards.
