That right there is proof that Toriyama was making shit up as he went along.
My opinion is that in the Buu Saga, Toriyama was tired of being somehow forced to keep Goku as the main character, and tried to make him less sympathetic than before.

He doesn't care about all the people killed by Buu ('it's no big deal, we'll call Shenron later'), he's messing around during the fight against Vegeta, and doesn't kill Buu only because he wants to try to teach two brats a technique which might allow them to defeat the worst monster they ever met ? It's like he doesn't give a damn about what's happening.

Yeah... it's called the Cell Games.
Oh and Freeza!

Kaio: Kill him now and get everyone out of there before the planet blows!

Goku: I want to fight him at his best so he wont have any regrets about getting pwned.

Thank god for inane Dragon Ball wishes.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

Notice how Toriyama always makes Goku less likable right as the series is "about to end?" I think he kept writing himself backdoors so that if it continued, he'd able to do it without people wanting Goku, but apparently, it didn't work.

I've never quite understood that. Why all the fangasms over Goku when he's one of, if not THE, least likable of the heroes?

Because he's not. The pansy-ass kids are less likable. :P

Vegeta has him beat by miiiiiiles.

Though to be fair, he's really not meant to be likable in the first place; the fact that he's grown as popular as he is says more about the fanbase than anything else.
Well, Vegeta may not be likable as a PERSON, but he's likable as a CHARACTER, if that makes sense.

Goku is pretty self-centered.

Gohan is pretty close too, not counting the brief "hahaha Cell I hope you really suffer" detour.

I haven't read all of the manga and I dislike the Buu Saga but having the past villains watch the fight with Kid Buu from Hell made it slightly more tolerable.

I remember chuckling when someone down there mentions Goku's turn around victory and Freeza crosses his arms muttering something along the lines of "....why am I not surprised..."

But from what most accounts suggest, fan (or maybe even editorial?) demand pressured him so that Son Goku was kept in the spotlight till the end.
Exactly. The trio +1 of Gohan, Goten, Trunks and Videl were clearly supposed to take over.

This is why movie...9? 10? I forget which one that has those 4 take on Broly was one of the best. No Deus Ex Machinas of Goku saving the day with a super technique, just 4 guys trying their best against a superior opponent.

I'd like to know exactly what was changed in the Buu saga by fan and editorial pressure.

This was all well and good, until he like...refused to kill Freeza and stuff. Like Freeza was going to learn from his mistakes and become a productive member of the intergalactic community. This is why I prefer movie Goku. he doesn't fuck around like TV Goku.

It's funny, I find Goku to be the exact opposite :P

What about Gohan (and his girly)?

Movie 10. And even there, Goku (sort of) helps.

(Damned Son family, always stealing the spotlight)

Gohan is a token eunich character. You can tell they just added him so they could say "look, we're diverse!".
