So... How was it?

Umm, not to stay off-topic some more but, Hellsing is a pretty good show, but I've seen waaaaaaaaay better. And as great as EVA is, it still at times is one big confusing mess that by the time of the movies, was so overdone with angst, it was almost comical. And sorry folks, that last episode of the t.v. series really was supposed to be the ending. It's just that so many fanboys bellyached and whined, that Hideaki Anno finally said, "Alright! Here's your big, overwrought, confusing, and violent ending! Happy now?!"

As for DB, yes it tends to be a starter anime and of course it's a much more simplistic series, but that doesn't mean it should be looked down upon. Simple can work really well too. As the saying goes, "Less is more." ^^

As this thread served little purpose from the start, I'll allow a little off-topic-ness to continue?

RE: HELLSING

How anyone could enjoy the show, let alone find it of any intellectual value, is beyond me. Watching that thing was one of the most torturous experiences of my life; the only reason I even watched it was because I bought the first two DVDs and felt the need to stick it out to the end. It made no sense, the desgins went down the crapper, the story was ill-conceived BEFORE it started getting worse, characters were not developed in any sense of the word...

God, that thing sucked.

Though I guess I could understand why some fans might like it. I mean, when I was a kid I thought Ninja Scroll was good. Then I watched it again a couple years later and realized how big of a steaming pile of feces it was.

RE: EVANGELION

It may be over-rated, but I think it's done so for a reason. I found it phenomenal. I put off watching it for soooo long simply because of all the hype; I wish I hadn't.

Evangelion is probably the only anime series I'd watch. Even though I've never watched the series...only seen the movies (and read the manga).
I was voted "most unique" and "most likely to become the next existential thinker" in high school.

We're premiering it in its near-complete-ness (16 of 17 tracks) at AWA next weekend. The editor for the Cell Game track will be tackling it right after AWA (plus, he lives a few minutes away and is a personal friend :P), so expect it REAL soon. It's freakin' great.

Ninja Scroll is an awesome work of anime. I think it was drawn extraordinarily well and the characters had depth for it being only a movie. calling it a steaming pile of feces shows your ignorance in anime. how you kept this site up baffles me. you cannot stay loyal to only one anime. yes DB is great, but dont base your opinions of other animes on its style and simplicity. Grrrrrrrrrr.....

On your reply to Hellsing. How can you say Hellsing is drawn bad compared to the latter episodes of DBZ and DBGT. I'm referring to the three-artist cycle that occured in the android saga to the cell saga and afterwords. some of that art was downright HORRIBLE.

How long ago did you see Hellsing btw?

And have you seen the movie Wrath of the Ninja?
That movie is also a great ninja movie, although confusing at some points. Even though it was created back in the 80's, it shares similar artistic aspects to present-day anime.

What animes do you like EX? besides DB that is, as you have made me curious now.

Ooo! Off-topicness, my favorite!

Hey Deus, what lewd acts are occuring in you new avatar. Let's see, from what I've seen since I've been here is:

Bulla stripping (boo-yah!)
Bulma and Bulla doing God-knows-what (just plain boo!)
Android 18 in, what seemed to me, a dominatrix outfit (not my cup of tea)
Now you have Bulma and... whoever that is, doing... what?

EDIT: maarken, that guy you just told off is one of the webmasters, just so you'll know. If I were you, I'd apologize adn hope you don't get hit with a full force Big Ban Attack [sic].

Oooooooh! Confrontation! I haven't had crap like this in YEARS! w00t, I've stiiiiill got it.

First off, I love how you assume that I'm "loyal" to but a single program. Just because my site focuses on a single franchise and I don't allow myself to fall to the newbie trap of "Let's update telling everyone what FUNimation has added to the Z-Store for Case Closed and Tenchi Muyo! DVDs"... doesn't mean that I don't enjoy anything other than DB.

I run a DB site. I talk about DB on my site. If people want to read about something else, they'll go elsewhere. I don't go to an Evangelion site looking for DB news, and I sure as Hell don't expect anyone to look for Evangelion content on my site.
maarken wrote:On your reply to Hellsing. How can you say Hellsing is drawn bad compared to the latter episodes of DBZ and DBGT. I'm referring to the three-artist cycle that occured in the android saga to the cell saga and afterwords. some of that art was downright HORRIBLE.
Did I say DB wasn't poorly drawn? No, I didn't. Another instance of someone randomly putting words in my mouth... err... fingers. You're reading what you want to read, and not what I'm actually saying.

I found absolutely no redeeming values to Hellsing, beyond possibly its moderately "OK" opening theme. I found it poorly drawn. I was bored to tears, I couldn't tell what was going on half the time, characters and villains seemed to suddenly appear for no reason what-so-ever, there seemed to be no basis for anyone's actions or reactions...

Sure, I've heard better things about the manga, but that's not the topic at hand, I haven't read it, and I don't talk about things I'm not familiar with as if I am.
maarken wrote:How long ago did you see Hellsing btw?
Just this past year. My last semester at college. I first saw an episode (or two?) two years ago (I think) fansubbed at my school's anime club, picked up the first two discs 'cuz I thought it might have promise, and sat on them for a long-ass time. When I finally got around to watching it, it was one of the most disappointing anime viewing experiences I've ever sat through for 13 episodes.
maarken wrote:And have you seen the movie Wrath of the Ninja?
No.
maarken wrote:That movie is also a great ninja movie, although confusing at some points. Even though it was created back in the 80's, it shares similar artistic aspects to present-day anime.
Yet that has nothing to do with the topics at hand.
maarken wrote:What animes do you like EX? besides DB that is, as you have made me curious now.
My current favorite show is One Piece, my fandom of which is the only to rival that of DragonBall in all my years of being an anime fan.

I've seen a lot in my day, and the vast majority is very forgettable. Here's just a short list of the shows that I found breathtaking and sucked me in for life, since you're so interested:
  • DragonBall
  • One Piece
  • Evangelion
  • Rurouni Kenshin
  • Kimagure Orange Road
Yes, it's a very short list; that's because (due to the general nature of logic and averages and percentages and such)... the vast majority of anime is average at best. I don't think there's too much more that I would ever be OMGHOLYCRAP over. I've seen a good deal of "old-school" vs "new-school," everything from shonen to shoujo and in-between. I've got a pretty good basis to form opinions from and make comparisons from, so I'm not just randomly spouting things out my arse when I happen to dislike things. Also, I'm not proclaiming the above shows to be the "best ever" and you absolutely must like them; they're my personal favorites that I'm entitled to, just like you're entitled to your own favorites (even if that happens to be Hellsing ^^).

And for the record, I found Akira to be one of the most over-hyped and ill-conceived piles of garbage in anime history, ground-breaking or not.

My apologies... I was angry at something else.. not you EX

Post by maarken » Sat Sep 18, 2004 5:30 pm

I do apologize (I've been doing that a lot here lol). I just received some bad news and I got upset about it. I shouldn't have taken it out on here, but it was already up and I needed to vent.

On the side, EX, I wasn't saying that you said DB wasn't poorly drawn. I just used it as a comparison to Hellsing animation.

I realize you are entitled to your opinion no matter how against them I might be. If you ban me, I accept it, otherwise I hope to reconcile this matter and move on.

You are a fan of Kenshin? Have you by chance happened to see Samurai X? What did you think of that? (Movies or series)

Also, do you prefer the One Piece manga to the animated series?

I don't mind that he's a webmaster. In fact because he's a webmaster makes him the one that should receive the critiques of those who post on the site.

I do admit that I was too rude in my post, but as I posted above, it was an indirect reason.

Well, there's that, from the time of ancient plays, but today it refers to more of a sudden plot twist / cheap excuse for an answer that saves characters, or things like that. A famous one being the birds in LotR, saving Frodo from lava at the very last second... If contemplate the meaning long enough and / or do some research, you can see the connection to it and the term from ancient greek times.

*ahem*. Not that it matters, or anything.

It never fails to suprise me how a single cropped pic can give someone so many ideas. But please...for the love of God, never say Bulla again. The character's name is Bra. Don't believe Funimation, it's a conspiracy >.>

Anyways, to satisfy your curioisity:

Actually, Deus, while I don't agree with him on certain anime, I agree with him there. ^^; I saw Akira at a friend's house a few years ago, and...

Quite frankly, I have no desire to see it again. Either any time soon or ever.

Well, I liked Akira. Like Evangelion, I didn't get it at all. Just when I think I understand an anime, it throws me off completely (like in Evangelion, when Adam was actually Lillith...blah blah). I guess the only anime I like are ones I don't get.

Oh, yes, Deus, you've opened my eyes. Now that I see the full picture, I wonder how I came up with the idea that it was something sexual. THE MAN (or Saiyan, whatever) IS RAPING HER! And she's his wife, which means... wait a minute, can you do that??? Or... oh boy... please tell me that's not Bra...

EDIT: Oh and about the Bulla thing, must... use... dub names! H-e-r-c-u-l-e! HFIL! The arm will grow back!!!

EDIT AGAIN: VegettoEX, are you telling me you didn't fall for the spectacular masterpiece that was Sailor Moon? That show turned me on to anime (in more ways than one).

The Playboy Senshi. :D

Edit: For the record, that's an official image. I scanned it from my copy of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon volume 2. I love odd mangaka.

With Akira, my understanding is if you read the manga, it makes more sense than the movie does. And johnyboy, it's not HFIL anymore. In the Buu saga, hell is known as "down below".
