No, it's a ripoff of Pokemon.

Though I've actually wondered why some people even mention it, I watch it a few times and it looks okay I guess, the first thing that puts me off is the anime style characters, but that's pretty common now anyway, and the characters seem really likeable.

I saw that the DVD versions and the TV verrsions are different too, like some girls clevage and breasts toned down or something, and violence too, so I may pick up the first season eventually.

Anyway, this kind of reaction from kids seems kinda normal, Goku is like Luke Skywalker or Spider-man for some kids, he's a hero to them just because he's the main character of a popular franchise kids happen to fall in love with all the time. As a child I thought the Super Mario Bros movie was the greastest movie of all time, I expect this kind of reaction from children for Dragonball Evolution.
Gotta love that "I fucking hate you" comment at the bottom.
That is the wonder of 4chan, my friend.

I work at a movie theatre, too, like omegacwa, and I just found out that we've been playing the trailer for Mall Cop(The movie with Kevin James).

I hope you don't mind me asking this, omegacwa, but what kind of theatre do you work at? I work at a Keresotes.

All anime steal some things from another source, whether it be something subtle...

Or something a little more obvious!

I'm really not quite sure which movie theater omegacwa works at.

Hehe I still think the '86 TF movie is one of the greatest of all time ^^

(I was 11 btw when that came out, saw it the first day in the theatres)
Even though I'm only 17, I think the '86 Transformers movie is awesome. It's a fine piece of children's animation.
I must have been the only 15 year old in the world to have bought the 20th anniversary special edition...

Geez... I'm weird.

Erm, more on topic (or, from what I could tell of the first page or two...), I'm sure kids will really enjoy the movie. Sure, Naruto is more popular, but kids still know about Dragon Ball Z. My 7-ish year-old cousin knows about it because of his older brother owning a copy of Budokai 2. I got my younger brother's friend interested in the series while he was watching me play Super Dragon Ball Z. Just because the series isn't at the forefront of children's television, these kids have older siblings and family members who can introduce them to the series.

And kids like stupid movies, no matter the subject matter, so, take that as you will.

Anyone else find the revelation of "it was made for the kids"/"the kids will like it" ironic considering that they removed a lot of the 'childish' elements of the story?

I didn't really see it as a revelation, but movie producers are pretty ironic sometimes. They're trying to hit a wide audience is all, fun for the kids but not childish enough for the older movie-goer?

Despite those elements being removed for that reason, as a fan I still feel alienated because of what they've done to Goku. :(

I mean, I'm happy we finally get "oozaru" (and I wonder how they'll pronounce it in this movie) but 99% of what I've seen of Chatku so far makes me depressed.

I'm still fine either way. I have to admit though, I have a hard time imaging a live action version of Goku that's faithful to the manga for some reason. I'd like to see a faithful one just because of that.

I reckon they will pronounce it 'Oohzaru', as in if it was japanese Uuzaru.

I'd love to see a more faithful (in both personality and looks) Goku. If it was assured that there would be a movie with a canon, in-character Goku, they'd have my ticket in a flash.

I guess with this movie it all depends on how attached you are to the characters; I'm not overly bothered one way or the other with how everyone else is coming out, but Goku's just in that "Do not Alter this Character" area for me. :?

If this was like....4 or more years ago when I was a hardcore fangirl I imagine I'd be really upset and rant/fit throwing rather than depressed about Chatku as I am now.

I understand, that's totally reasonable. And I love Goku the way he is in the manga too. But for some reason I just don't care if the movie Goku is 100% different. It would seem silly to change him that much, but...eh, I don't know why it bothers me so little, but that's how I am.

I think if anyone's been changed 100%, it's Mai.
I have no attachment to her character, so I don't really care too much.
She does totally look like a Power Rangers villain in that wine-red outfit though.

Goku though...I think them alienating him in "high school" and him getting all angsty about it is what bothers me the most because, well, it's Goku; I don't like the idea of seeing him bullied. I feel like walking up there and sucker-punching the script-writers for doing that to Goku much like Chi-Chi beat up that tutor who was whipping Gohan in that pre-Trunks filler.

Also the whole Goku-with-a-sex-drive seems more humorously wrong than annoying to me.
I know he gets excited when facing a tough challenge; but not that type of excited. ^^;;;

I know how Goku's portrayal can't bother us.

Pretend it's Goku Jr.

There's another Gif some where like this showing Sasuke and Bruce Lee doing the exact same stances and moves.

You mean this one? I'm pretty sure it's Jackie Chan too.

I actually work at an independently run movie theater. The owner owns 3 theaters in total, one in CT, one in NJ, and one in NY I believe. The Theater use to be run by United Artist/Regal Cinemas but they sold it because we are a twin (two screens) and they felt we weren't a big enough money maker.

Ah, I see. I know a few people who work at independently run theatres. That's cool.

What would you guys consider must-have characteristics of Goku? Does he have to have them all the time?

In the holy texts he's not retarded (maybe that wasn't the right word) 100% of the time, but... I think that was for the best.
If challenge had a taste, you'd be quite delicious.

I guess they want him to not dwell on unimportant things in life, like fitting in. And overall not taking things too seriously. Manga Goku you have to push really far to get him really angry, and even then he never gets depressed.

I wouldn't say he stresses over it, it's more of "This is pointless." I really think people are overreacting to the high school scenes... it's less painful than watching Shia Labouf for 2+ hours.
