Meh.

Have there been any surprises in the match results so far?

Not really. But I'm convinced Vegetto is going to get his ass kicked by XXI. That'll be a good "oh shit" moment to shift the tone of the tournament from "yeah, whatevs" to "we're screwed." The Nappa vs. Freeza "fight" was a fun surprise, too.

So Gogeta Jr. is actually better than Toriyama in term of art?

These days maybe. Toriyama's art looks incredibly lazy compared to his stuff in the late 80s. Age catching up I guess.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

I prefer his current style to his old, and no, I don't believe Gogeta Jr. has ever surpassed Toriyama.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

About as many as there were in the original manga. Hell, probably about as many as there are in any shonen series.

No, I'm not saying this is as well made as Toriyama's work (not in the least), but I'm not going to pretend that the fights were ever full of surprises. For me, it's more important to make someone doubt their initial thoughts on who would win, and that has been done plenty.

Or it's less about the ending and more about how they get there. The best thing about DBM isn't the fights, it's the interactions. I'm hoping they ramp that part up now that most of the throwaway fights are out of the way.

As for the art, it's definitely gotten better...after it had gotten worse. Compare Cell vs. Dabra to Bra vs. Zangya to Cell vs. Bojack. It took a massive dive in detail once the lighting changed from night to day (a bad change, I think) and it's now starting to pick up again.

The difference between Gogeta Jr. and Toriyama might also be attributed to the different tools used. Toriyama put a lot more fine detail and thin pencil lines in his stuff. I'm not sure how easy it is to replicate that digitally.

Gogeta Jr. is a very talented artist but I personally wouldn't put him up there with Toriyama just yet. There are times in his work where his characters seemed a little too stiff and the action sequences could be more dynamic. It has nothing to do with the tools he's currently using (not sure if he's working with digital or traditional means).

As for Toriyama's art today, I much prefer his very early work. I don't believe his art has gone down in quality, his style has just changed a lot since when he started out with Dragon Ball. And if it has gone down, I don't believe it's because of old age. It's more like "I just gonna draw this quick and not really give it my all. Why? Because why do I have to?" attitude.

Gogeta Jr is pretty good at drawing IMO. I won't mind to see him draw some official Dragon Ball stuff one day.

Now he uses a graphic tablet (since the 119 page, if the people on the French forum are to be trusted), before he would use the traditional pencil+ink approach (as detailed here).

Regardless, I think it's safe to say that Gogeta Jr. is probably the best Toriyama imitator I've ever seen. I'm just still sad that they stopped using the night backdrop since it made everything look a lot more dynamic. I guess it was just too much of a pain in the ass to continue.

I guess they are working on something for the front page? I'm pretty sure everything should be okay.

Uh Oh... It's a bit early to tell but if this is being discontinued that's one serious cliffhanger..

The Bra picture is awesome though!

Should we expect anything on Sunday?
