Exactly.
Thats not going to achieve anything though and thats the point i am trying to make. He is the character designer and has his own style whether people like it or not.
But that's the point. His style is literally worse than how it was 20 years ago.
Little things like removing the highlights, fixing the shadows and the noses, having darker/washed out colors and thicker lines- little things like that can make a huge difference. Specially those awful highlights and unnatural shadows.
Why isn't anyone on Toei questioning his choices? That's the point I'm trying to make.

Because Dragon Ball is doing well and there isn't a huge demand for a visual shake up.

That particular key visual done by Yamamuro looks fine to me. I don't think there's need to change for that one. I'm actually content with shiny highlight if done right, ala GT. Dragon Ball Super tends to go overboard with the highlights, but that key visual for the new arc looks balanced, so I'm not too bothered by it.

My issue with the piece comes from the lack of expression. Yamamuro doesn't exaggerate faces enough, leaving everything looking a bit too mechanical and flat. But you're not wrong, it's one of the better key visuals we've had in a long time; certainly better than the Universe 6 one, that's for sure! I mostly just play edit these things for fun.

Just goes to show you that Yamamuro can be an excellent character designer if he really tries. It's an improvement from his previous key visuals. I feel like what he did before was a quick job, so he could move on to other things. If he had made a little more time to focus on little details, then the key animations would look a lot better. Iskei certainly sent that message loud and clear with his amazing Episode #16 character models.

One thing that really stuck out to me in that key art is that Goku Black doesn't have highlights in his hair, that's the opposite of what I've come to expect from Yamamuro. I was pleasantly surprised.

It's an apocalypse, I don't see why Mai should be wearing her eye shadow.

Because it gives her some personality. Because I like it.
It's for fun. No real reason.

Out of curiosity, any reason why you chose the faded colors for the visual?

No other reason than 'muh dark gritty Terminator DB plot lineZ'. Figured it fit the tone more. I even added a layer of grain just for fun.

Guys what you think here?
Found them comparisons on instagram.
I wish they did a better job with Vegeta's muscles to be honest, I feel as though he looks way younger in Super.

May I inquire the edit for Future Trunks looking towards the audience? It looks better with the two looking back to back as threats approach from all sides. Aside from that, I fancy how Goku Black is looking there way more than his official counterpart.

1996 vegeta destroys the new one when it comes to the first comparison pic. His face is too wide. I don't mind that look for goku (I actually don't like a thin face on goku) but on vegeta it's just bad. The other ones aren't as big of a difference but I do feel like everyone looks younger in super.

Disclaimer: I might get into a disagreement with you. Sometimes I might even get feisty about it. I'll never harbor negative feelings because of it though. I hope you feel the same way!
I made a bet with Alee9977 that Vegeta won't be beaten quickly by an opponent. If I lose, I switch my avatar to Vegeta getting beat by hit. If I win, he switches it to Vegeta holding Black by his hair. This will last a month.

All of the old ones absolutely destroy the new ones. New Vegeta looks like he's been going on a whey protein withdrawal.

I hate when people post irrelevant comparisons. It doesn't make any sense. They were both made under different circumstances like a different artstyle, angle, shot, budget, project, time spent on it, artist, etc. It just gets annoying seeing people downplay Super like that.

I just ignore these comparisons, because their purpose is obvious. Nothing good comes from being stuck in the past.
People were begging so long for a new Dragon Ball series, they finally have it. Now time to bitch about it.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

I don't like the ones made from fans with only one intent: "Hurrrdurr, look how shitty everything is now!" You know, the ones that use keys from movies against inbetweens from the worst Super episodes. Those are totally useless.
That said, I think discussing character designs and general art direction is totally valid. I have few issues with taking the current work and making minor adjustments with a friendly, "Well, this would be cool if these changes were made", rather than something steeped in nothing but disdain for everything new.
It's definitely possible to have conversations about this stuff, so long as everyone's being rational. I don't think stifling conversation simply because something is new is the right way to go about things. Not everything is "bitching".

Like you said, It depends what comparisons are being made.
The ones you showed about the new Future Trunks promo arc for example are welcome and worth to talk about.
Stuff like this:
are bait and nothing more.

Yeah, absolutely agree. That's the stuff I was referring to. Movie key vs Super inbetween. Just comes from people who either don't understand what they're talking about, or are just looking for a reaction. I try not to respond to stuff like that in this thread unless it's getting the attention of a lot of people.
