I know how they did it!
I know how they framed it!
Okay, so I went to http://db.schuby.org/daizex/viewtopic.php?t=4689 and downloaded the picture of the film frame. I then went to http://andrew.hedges.name/experiments/aspect_ratio/ and put "16" on the top left, "9" on the bottom left, and put "475" (the horizontal pixel length of the image I downloaded) into the top right. On the bottom right "267" came out.
I then opened up the picture I downloaded in Microsoft Office Picture Manager and cropped the vertical area down to 267 pixels. When I centered the amount of cropping taken from the top and bottom, it came out looking exactly like FUNi's 16:9 frame!
I did a little bit of division on Google to see the percentage lost using this technique (I put in "267 / 321") and it came out that we're [edit]retaining about 83.1% of the original vertical area from the original frame.[/edit]
In the end, it all comes down to actually watching the DVDs and deciding for yourself, but after looking for a few other frames online and cutting them down to 16:9 myself, I'm not as skeptical as I was before about 16:9 as long as whoever is framing these shots has some sense and doesn't frame Dragonball Z carelessly.
Even if the product does turn out well, FUNi's still full of liars. That's beside the point, though.
I'm sure there are a lot of you here going "duh" but I'm not a huge techie or anything so this is all more of a "wow" to me.

That, or waiting for Mike and various DaizEX members to give their reviews.
What I'm saying is that as long as the frames aren't carelessly put into 16:9 this doesn't have to turn out being the bane of everything Dragonball Z.

Re: I know how they did it!
The problem is, the edges of the original 1.48:1 film frame are very heavily curved. If they're extracting a 16:9 frame that uses the entire width, they have very little room to maneuver up and down before the curved edges start appearing in the frame. They're basically stuck with the dead centre for every shot (which seems to be slightly above the centre of the 4:3 version).Kendamu wrote:In the end, it all comes down to actually watching the DVDs and deciding for yourself, but after looking for a few other frames online and cutting them down to 16:9 myself, I'm not as skeptical as I was before about 16:9 as long as whoever is framing these shots has some sense and doesn't frame Dragonball Z carelessly.

Sure, it's FUNimation, but I know that there are a lot of people on this forum alone who could center the fram in Widescreen halfway decently. Hell, the guy at DBZSC makes some of his DBZ music videos in Widescreen (cropping the 4:3 version instead of the whole original frame, obviously) and it turns out rather well.
I'm really hoping I like what I spent that $20 on enough that I don't necessarily have to boycott FUNimation anytime soon.

Well I'm hoping for the best as well since I also bought the set. FUNimation though, they just have a really bad track record with this sort of stuff. The compression on their DVD's have been crap. I wouldn't be surprised if they cropped a whole damn episode without paying attention to each individual frame like they should be doing. Well, in any case I'll be picking this set up. I'll just hope for the best.Kendamu wrote:Sure, it's FUNimation, but I know that there are a lot of people on this forum alone who could center the fram in Widescreen halfway decently. For those who've pre-ordered the set, what's your delivery estimate? For me (and probably anyone else who ordered from amazon.com) it's between February 8, 2007 and February 10, 2007.

4-6 days after it ships (which should be before the 6'th). It only costed me 9.50, and this is on top of the 19.90 that I payed for the box set. Pretty good deal if you ask me!DaemonCorps wrote:For those who've pre-ordered the set, what's your delivery estimate? Damn it! I was impatient and got the next day delivery from CD Universe.fps_anth wrote:4-6 days after it ships (which should be before the 6'th). lol, I was thinking about that. It's 4-6 days for $9.90, then it jumps way up to $18.80 for 2-4 days (something like that). Pretty crazy prices if you ask me, but atleast you'll have the box set before me!SatoSky wrote:Damn it! $9.90 for shipping? I got my order off of amazon for $30 plus $3 shipping, which is basically the same thing. And all this time, I thought cduniverse had something going on with their crazy $20 price. (Or am I misunderstanding something?)fps_anth wrote:lol, I was thinking about that. Well, I live in Canada. So, of course, I have to pay a little more than the people in the U.S.DaemonCorps wrote:$9.90 for shipping? Standard 3-10 Days 4.99
Priority 4-6 Days 9.20
Expedited 3-5 Days 18.50
Express 1-3 Days 21.50
I COULD have picked standard shipping, which would have totaled at about 25 bucks. But hell, I'm getting this set for 28 bucks with a fairly good delivery time! It's still a steal! For 3 dollar shipping, how long will it take to get to your house?

According to amazon, that's standard shipping (around ten days-ish).fps_anth wrote:For 3 dollar shipping, how long will it take to get to your house?
In other related news, I was talking to my friend who isn't a hardcore DBZ fan (I got him into it for a while with the manga, but that's it) and even he reached the conclusion that the series was originally filmed for 4:3 and could look strange cropped in widescreen. Then again, he's a techie, so he'd know these things

Umm... Is it just me or did the status change from pre-release to back-ordered in January? I'm talking about the CDUniverse pre-order. Also, the page changed and so did the pricing. I think...

I have had my confirmation since I pre-ordered it at 20.64, back before it was known that it was going to be widescreen, but the status changed from pre-order to backorder which is kind of odd.

Hey guys, apparently aaaanime.com has the set in ("NEW! Arrived: 1/22/07") for wholesale.
http://www.aaaanime.com/dvds.asp?view=item&code=FN02242
I suppose the set should be arriving at retailers as we speak. However they won't be able to put it out until the instructed street date unless they want to get into trouble.
