As for me changing the main characters? not a good idea in my book, I wouldnt give it a look. Goku's the only reason why I watch this series despite the horrible animation.

I don't get why so many people watch the series for Goku and are so obsessed with him. Sure he's a like-able character, but let me remind you guys that Goku was absent for the most of DBZ. Actually the character who got the most screen time is definitely Gohan.
I surely like Goku as a character, while my favorite is Vegeta, but if Vegeta died forever when he exploded trying to kill Fat Buu, I would still watch the serie and he would still be my favorite character.
So I wouldn't mind a new serie set in another universe (like U6) with new characters we can grow with and like as much as our U7 ones.
I also wouldn't mind a spin off on Future Trunks' timeline when Goku and all the others are perma-dead (I wouldn't mind them giving the Dragon Balls a limit of 20 years since someone died to be revived, meaning Trunks COULD revive Gohan in some way) the spin-off would be short obviously as I can't see many opportunities for Trunks to have new enemies, unless Babidi comes to Earth to revive Buu.

I always liked the fact that he's a protagonist but is absent most of the time (Z) , only to have badass entrance in the last minute and save the day. Also, Goku is and always be the main character, he IS Dragon Ball.emperior wrote:SansrivaaL wrote:As for me changing the main characters? not a good idea in my book, I wouldnt give it a look. He already did - Gohan. Of course then he made a huge mistake backing out from handing the franchise to Gohan last minute.dbzfan7 wrote:People really don't have enough faith in Toriyama I suppose. Exactly. Even Batman who is almost synonymous with Bruce Wayne had succesful spin off that allowed new generation to shine. Bruce was still present and important, but fans accepted Terry.ArchedThunder wrote:As long as they have good characters people would warm up to a new cast. Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Really makes me question whether people like Dragon Ball, or really just like one aspect such as Goku and that's it. I'd be fine if absolutely none of the older characters outside of Goku and Vegeta were relevant, so long as a colorful new cast joins those 2. I've harped for wanting older characters to do something, but my biggest issue is over exposure. Dragon Ball Z got this and didn't over expose Goku. That made his returns all the more epic and craved. I'll stick with Dragon Ball no matter what it does, because I am a fan. Through better or worse.emperior wrote:SansrivaaL wrote:As for me changing the main characters? not a good idea in my book, I wouldnt give it a look. And it gave the other characters the chance to shine. Vegeta is currently the only secondary character from the old cast that that gets some time in the spotlight and Beerus&Whis get the rest.I always liked the fact that he's a protagonist but is absent most of the time (Z) , only to have badass entrance in the last minute and save the day. So,so anxious about the upcoming arc regarding Piccolo......
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
One of the biggest complaints I heard from GT around while it was still running, and a couple years after was that it was Goku Time. Only he really mattered and no one else did. Was that the complaint? Or was it because Vegeta was among those who don't matter. So if he always mattered too, would the Goku Time complaint disappear and no one would have an issue with that? Super hasn't sunk that low yet, but it's got no shame in making cast members, superfluous characters.Michsi wrote:And it gave the other characters the chance to shine. There's a combination of things I like about Dragon Ball, but Gokû and Vegeta are the only two reasons I'm sticking with Super despite the rushed animation. If they weren't in Super, I would not be watching the show.
To compare; I also like Toei's Precure, but I'm actually leaning towards sitting out this year's series (MahoPre) because there's so many things about it that don't appeal to me:
It doesn't mean I'm going to stop like Precure in general, and I'll just hope that the next season is interesting to me, but liking something in general doesn't mean you'll like every product it puts out.

Vegeta's developement was great, but it finished. Goku's finished even earlier. Toriyama's not doing anything interesting with them. Sure it's great to get more of something you like, but if it the new content doesn't bring anything fresh to the table and just rehashes old tropes and tired jokes, how long do you think you will care? 50 episodes, 100 episodes? By then you will be done with the series forever. Too much of that good thing is a thing.
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Of the many faults with GT, one of the big ones was that everyone else was basically useless. They introduced Pan and Uub as new characters, but never did anything with them, and Uub was basically ignored for like 95% of the whole show. And they turned Pan in an annoying tag-along whose only job was to be a replacement Bulma, except it was Trunks doing all the technical work. GT could've done something well, like exploring the rest of the Dragon Ball universe. But the writing just drove the whole show into the ground. Any good concept can be ruined by bad writing.dbzfan7 wrote:One of the biggest complaints I heard from GT around while it was still running, and a couple years after was that it was Goku Time. The classmates/roommates and studying under Whis stuff is new and fresh. I'm having a lot of fun watching that. Gokû and Vegeta have never trained together before and it was something I'd been wanting to see since I first saw Z. "Interesting" is subjective. I find what's going on with the two of them interesting to me.Basaku wrote:Vegeta's developement was great, but it finished. Goku's finished even earlier. There are things in Super I'm tired of sure; I'm tired of Roshi and Oolong, I'm tired of Freeza, I'm still disappointed in what Super's been doing with Chi-Chi and Videl.
Honestly I think it all comes down to what each individual fan is looking for in Super. I'm here mostly for Gokû and Vegeta antics. If there was something I was hoping would happen that hadn't happened in Super I'd probably be upset too (in fact I have been upset over Super before). I know there are people who want Dragon Ball to do a "next gen" thing with a completely new cast; that's just not my thing; I'm not interested in it. If a next-gen thing happens at some point; great for the people who want it. I won't watch or follow a "next gen" DB series, but I'm sure other people will.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
My point is would that complaint still exist if Vegeta was more useful, but everyone else remained the same. Seeing Super I'm starting to think people really were just upset with Vegeta and no one else.Zelvin wrote:Of the many faults with GT, one of the big ones was that everyone else was basically useless. I find it stupid that people watch the show only for Goku and Vegeta.
GT had many flaws, it being ALL around Goku was one of them. There was no reason to not let the other characters fight the 7 Shadow Dragons. There was no reason not to include Gotenks and not to transform Gohan in a SSJ4 too. Also Pan never achieving SSJ and let's not forget Goku beats EVERY. SINGLE. VILLAIN. and the stupid universe adventure arc that was also executed very poorly.
You could say Super is all about Goku and Vegeta for now, but at least its surely less boring than GT and actually introduced new meaningful characters (Whis, Beerus, Champa, Vados)
We will judge Super better when it ends. At least its being written by Dragon Ball original creator.

I don't like GT. I couldn't stand them turning Gokû into a child. I was so upset about that. The only GT design I like is ssj4.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Yep. The Buu arc was setting up Gohan/Goten/Trunks to take over before we got a dragged out ending that circled back to Goku saving the day. Still disappointed in that. Both fans and Toriyama should be more willing to embrace the "newer" generation instead of treading old waters. Personally, I don't think Goku is all that great and hasn't had any decent character development in a long, long time.Basaku wrote:He already did - Gohan. At least Super is looking to make Piccolo and Gohan relevant again... maybe.
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
I don't find that stupid, it's just kind of odd to love a series when really it's just for like a few things. It's like if I said I liked Sonic Adventure...when I actually only like half of it. So really I'm not that big a fan of it, just half of what it offered.emperior wrote:I find it stupid that people watch the show only for Goku and Vegeta.

Oh without a doubt Super has done better with characters by having Beerus, Whis, Champa, Vados, and a possible new bunch with U6. It's just Beerus and Whis essentially stand on the sides doing food stuff mostly, while Goku and Vegeta are really the only real concerns. We're not really following Beerus and Whis at all, we're following those two. Though I'd say from entertainment standpoint it kinda depends on what I'm looking for.
He said ONLY for them. As in nobody else matters, nothing else matters. Fuck other characters. Fuck plot. Fuck everything else. Goku and Vegeta are all that matter. Everything else can rot.Chuquita wrote:I like Super for Gokû and Vegeta. Rude to call me "stupid" for liking something you don't.

I didn't call anyone stupid, I said "I find it stupid" that's a little different.
One of the main reasons I like and watch Dragon Ball is for the training parts, the plot, the battles and its unique world. Sure characters are important and deeper ones even more important. But if we got a new protagonist as long as the show is good why should I stop watching it?
In fact my favorite parts of DBZ are the TV Specials. I love both of them and Goku isn't the protagonist there.

At first I wondered about that too but after RoF I think they'll use the same excuse they did for Freeza. Since Buu was born with a much higher power level than Freeza, Uub will probably have more potential. I'm not sure if this logic applies to the Kaioshin, Bojack, Broly, or any other character stronger than Freeza though.Noah wrote:For me is hard to connect DBS with EoZ, like you said when Super ends Goku probably would have surpassed Whis/Vados... So really why the f*** would he still be impressed by a kid that is Pure Boo-tier? Isn't Base God Goku stronger than Boo-han now? I don't see these things interconnecting, I hope we get an explanation in the future,
or else one of the two: DBS will be not canon or EoZ will be reconnected.
I think that might work better to be honest. It's kinda like how in Digimon, after the main characters reach their Mega forms or even further beyond, they reboot the series with a new alternate universe and start the cycle again. In one of the other universes, you can start from the beginning to show their progress throughout their lives like in U7.emperior wrote:Changing lead characters in Universe 7 would be stupid.
The best thing would be to make the new guys from other universes appealing and then tell their story from the beginning.
The other option is a sequel like DBO set so far into the future that all the main heroes have died of old age. Their descendants would start off much weaker and you can avoid the inevitable universe busting antagonist until the end. I can't see a direct sequel to End of Z lasting more than one saga unless everyone all the SSJ God tier and above last generation heroes decides to sit it out for the entire series.
One my main complaints about Super is that it ONLY focuses on Goku and Vegeta. All that jazz about Goten, Trunks, and Gohan becoming the next generation during the Buu saga has been completely forgotten. Gohan just keeps getting weaker and weaker while Gotenks is only a joke character and appears for one gag and defuses. In RoF, Gotenks apparently doesn't' sense what's going on and in Super all he does is headbutt Tagoma under the belt. From my understanding, Super is mainly intended to sell merchandise. Goku and Vegeta are likely the most popular Z fighters so that's probably why they'll remain in the spotlight.dbzfan7 wrote:My point is would that complaint still exist if Vegeta was more useful, but everyone else remained the same.
