I really hope Natoshi Shida will accept the torch being passed to as the character designer/animation supervisor. Then have Nakatsuru, Tate, Ryou, Ide, and Hisada do some great cuts, providing they have enough time for better quality work. They have an extra two months to work with, after all.Chuquita wrote:Those cuts look great; so jealous in that I wish new DB animation would get cuts like that. I still wish we knew who the animation director/character designer for DB15 will be by now.
So hungry for DB15 news....

Oonishi is Oonishi Ryou's family name, not his given name.
I doubt the 'extra two months' are going to amount to anything. Toei Animation has more projects going on now than they did for the last film. Hisada Kazuya isn't the animator he once was, either. Shida Naotoshi seems happy to stick to only doing key animation, so I doubt we will seem him take on the character designer role. His influence would ultimately be more so felt if he merely key animated several minutes, rather than tried to clean up other animators' work.
While I wouldn't call Ide Takeo a great animator, I do suspect he would be the next in line to take over as character designer, given his history with recent Dragon Ball productions. One Piece 3D2Y had one hundred key animators, ten animation supervisors, and a chief animation supervisor, so it's likely this film will be in the same situation. A single key animator can do about two cuts per day. If the movie is eighty minutes long it will have about twelve hundred cuts, so animation needs to begin yesterday for something good to get made.

Well, at this point anything's fine as long as they give us a great movie to watch. Tadayoshi Yamamuro recruiting talents is just a bonus, I guess.

How long was OP3D2Y in production for? Curious for comparison's sake to what DB15's may be.
I wish Toei wasn't working on so many productions at once; the quantity's really hurting the quality this year (so far I have been mostly disappointed in SMC's animation, and HaCha has just recently started to semi-recover animation-wise imo, but still isn't up to the level of earlier Precure series' animation).

I'm not sure. My guess is about four or five months, given that Watanabe Koudai was the character designer for a series that came to an end in March. Assuming the special had fifteen hundred cuts and each key animator was assigned on average fifteen cuts, that would take two weeks for a single key animator to finish their work. Of course, production likely wasn't linear thanks to having a shortage of available animators. Cindy H. Yamauchi claims that a single 22-minute episode is allotted only one month to complete its animation. Key animators are usually assigned twenty cuts per episode, though.Chuquita wrote:How long was OP3D2Y in production for? Curious for comparison's sake to what DB15's may be.

My guess is the movie will have about one hundred key animators and a dozen animation supervisors to clean up their rushed work. Talented key animators will probably do a few cuts, but otherwise weak and inexperienced animators will rush out most of the film's animation. Toei Animation's in-house staff are not necessarily able to work on a project constantly, so even if Shida, Oonishi, Hamano, Takara, or Itaoka were up to doing a few dozen (or hundred) cuts I doubt they would be allowed to, given Toei Animation has six-to-six episodes they need to broadcast each week. If Yamamuro or his producers have ties with talented freelancers then those freelancers could theoretically do as many cuts as they like, assuming they did not have commitments to other projects. It's times like this I wish Yamamuro Tadayoshi was close with someone from Studio Cockpit. If he could get into contact with Iwane Masa'aki, who is known for his speed, we could probably have some decent work. Iwane is a strong action and gag animator, but also regularly churns out entire episodes himself. Then again, he might not want to leave Pocket Monster. The only time he has is for co-workers who need his help on another series or to work on his favorite animated series, Uchuu Senkan Yamato.

Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread
It doesn't necessarily have to be veteran animators from the series. Yamamuro being in the animation industry for over 20 years, you'd think he'd have many connections to recruit some freelance talents to work on some cuts for the movie, like someone from Madhouse, Production I.G, Bones, or Gaines studios. I don't watch Berserk anime, but given the few trailers from three movies have smooth motion cuts, maybe someone from these movies can be used to work on the movie. They did for some high quality cuts, from what I saw on my brief glimpse on trailers.

In last years one piece anime became bad again. But I love these fight cuts.JulieYBM wrote:One Piece 3D2Y aired this weekend. It is 107 minutes long and has some great action cuts. I hope Director Yamamuro tries to recruit Itou Naoyuki to storyboard for him.
Only in specials or movies they do this, but its worth it.
When Toei wants, they still can do it.

They can definitely do it; I feel they just spread their resources too thin to the point where the time and cost isn't worth it to them in most circumstances.
And because they actually earn more money with 7 shows this year instead of 5 from last year, it just gives incentive to keep going at their current rate.
It makes me sad; I miss having cool-looking Precure animation in the series proper and not just in the movies. I worry they'll do it again with next year's series. Though, I'm not a big fan of this year's character designs, so I'm hoping that's a good chunk of it. (They change character designers' each year w/each new series; so if you don't like this year's, you might like next year's).
One Piece's series animation's been really hit-or-miss; but it's been like that for a while.
I like stylish-looking animation like Tate's and Umakoshi's, or fluid-looking perspective-type animation like Shida's.
Yamamuro's plastic-y wide-bodies do nothing for me. That's why I was frustrated that he gets to be director and why I'm so hoping that whoever gets to be animation director can break away from that tired art-style. Yamamuro's art doesn't even look like Toriyama's Buu arc art-style.
OT - new DB15 news; if only there would be some.

Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread
The PreCure movie this year should be pretty good. Nagamine Tatsuya is directing, so he will probably acquire some talented key animators. The movie comes out 11 October, which is probably around when animation for Dragon Ball Z 2015 will begin if not be in full-swing. Even if PreCure's movie isn't finished until just before it hits theaters there will probably still be some time for animators to work on Dragon Ball Z.
Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread
The trailer for the HaCha movie really looks good (and makes me wish the series proper was a little closer to it in terms of quality animation).
Normally Precure movies come out closer to the end of October than the beginning; making me wonder if it's not earlier this year because they've got to set time up to get started on DB15. (But then, are they going to do the annual March Precure-All-Stars movie this coming year? I'm actually not sure if they will, or if they do that they probably won't use the entire cast at this point--things are getting bloated with the character-count on those, even though I did enjoy Nozawa voicing the monster bears in the most recent one.)
I'm super-curious as to if ssjg form's physical appearance gets to come back in DB15 or if ssjg'll just be regulated to "the reason Gokû's stronger now" status like for that one chunk of the Beerus fight where he was in regular ssj form. I really, really liked 70% ssjg form (and I want to see what 100% ssjg looks like) and would be very sad if BOG was the only time we get to see it. Also never got any commentary from Gokû on his thoughts on its appearance other than that entertaining (imo) bit where he checks out his arms twice in the span of a few moments right after becoming ssjg. X3 He looked like he wanted to say something and then didn't due to time constraints.

Goku transformed at the end when he "absorbed" Beerus' attack. So maybe he'll be able to completely control the SSJG form int he future. I'm also one of those that actually really loved the design, although the skinny part still makes me upset

I never payed attention to the technical stuff I until come here and read the fanbase comments.
I always noticed the differences, like when Goku arrived to fight Freeza. I was like " He's pretty buff and older here" but never thought to much about it.
Now, when I rewacted Dragon Ball some weeks ago, I payed attention to that for the first time. If i had to choose my favourite guy, it is Minoru Maeda.
If this makes you feel any better.

The wait is a killer; but I definitely feel we're getting stuff in December; that's Toei's big "look at all this neat stuff!" month, what with Jump Festa and all.
I do hope for some general news this month though. TuT Even though my hopes for news this month aren't that high.
I also really really like ssjg form. Combining the fire-power and big bright red irises with the "Surprise! Magenta hair and svelte, younger-looking body" was really avant garde, imo.
I wanted him to get a costume to go with it, but I was impressed with what we got to begin with. He got new boots with ssjg, I guess that counts. ^^;
I'd be curious to see that flame-aura produced with regular 2-D animation, but I'd be completely happy just to have Gokû spend some time in the next film honing his ssjg power and showing what interesting new stuff he can do in that form. It'd be nice if he learns in DB15 exactly how he absorbed that final attack at the end of BOG.

Maeda Minoru only ever provided key animation for two episodes, Dragon Ball Episode #22 and Episode #29. Otherwise he simply acted as animation supervisor for episodes with animators from Studio Junio or Toei Animation who drew the characters relatively on model.FortuneSSJ wrote:I never payed attention to the technical stuff I until come here and read the fanbase comments.

Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread
Why was the One Piece 3D2Y special not made into a theatrical release?
Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread
My guess would be because Toei's on a "One Piece films have to be written by Eiichiro Oda" run right now. They feel they can get more people into seats when they can advertise that the manga's author wrote the script. 3D2Y wasn't written by Oda, so it's a TV movie instead.

Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread
One Piece films since 2009 have been mostly 'events'. Strong World and Z have been promoted as having heavy involvement from Oda Ei'ichirou, so my guess is that the production committee members decided it would be best to space out film releases to build interest and give time for Oda to be involved and for a story to be crafted. Fuji TV likes to show the previous year's film on TV to coincide with the upcoming film, but because there aren't any films released every year then Fuji TV decided to commission TV specials. It's a smaller, but still calculated merchandising ploy. Air a new special, use it to promote a sponsor's musician or idol via a voice cameo and/or song, air it on a Saturday night, then release it on home video. It works relatively well, although Episode of Luffy was outsourced heavily to Madhouse and Episode of Merry was rushed just as bad as Shingeki no Kyojin.Bullza wrote:Why was the One Piece 3D2Y special not made into a theatrical release?
Pocket Monster does similar by airing the previous year's movie the month of the new film's release in theaters. I believe Naruto Shippuuden also does so, although not at frequently given there was no film in 2013.
Chu: Oda doesn't write the screenplays of the movies, but he is heavily involved on a design and story level. Like I noted above, my guess is that the schedule of the films have been prolonged so that Oda can contribute to the films at an leisurely pace.
Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread
I'm kinda sad Goku isn't going to use SSJ2 and SSJ3 anymore. Especially because I love SSJ3's design on Goku. I hope Gotenks uses it in this movie (and an older Gotenks this time Toriyama), even though it isn't likely since Toriyama appears he wants to simplify DB the most he can.

Is this same thing happening with Naruto as well? Kishimoto has a lot of involvement with Road to Ninja which went on to be the most successful Naruto film in the same way Strong World was for One Piece.
Naruto also didn't have a movie last year so like One Piece also skipped a year. There is a movie coming out this year again with Kishimoto's involvement.
Strong World was enormously successful so I don't know if that started something. The same thing worked for Battle of Gods too.
One good movie every two years worked on by the original author is far better than one mediocre movie per year written by someone else.
Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread
Yeah, the 2012 and 2014 films both have heavy involvement from Kishimoto. I suspect this was done because the series has been in a flux of "could end at any moment" and so trying to do something special for the potentially last film was something the production committee wanted to try to do. Now we know the comic is going to be over soon, so the 2014 film seems to be made with that in mind.
