Ted's success is (slightly)surprising in the fact that the movie's comedic sensibilities don't seem very Japanese and have a handful of American references; I wonder if the Japanese dub script changed any dialog.
Uh... Dragon Ball forum. The Ted character Frank is played by Bill Smitrovich, and his Japanese dub voice is Shozo Iizuka. Iizuka is the original Nappa from Z, before Nappa was recast as Tetsu Inada in Kai. Dragon Ball. That was lucky.

I can't tell if that's sarcastic or not.hulkty wrote:How are people surprised about Ted? It was created by genius, Seth MacFarlane.
Wow, that's an awesome bit of Trivia. I love seeing different connections DB voice actors have in other works.B wrote: Uh... Dragon Ball forum. He is a very smart, very talented, creative man. Who, a lot of people forget, has little do with Family Guy, American Dad! or the Cleveland show beyond voice acting and has for a number of years. (Which is where most of his criticisms come from anyway, backlash from them.)Big Momma wrote:I can't tell if that's sarcastic or not.hulkty wrote:How are people surprised about Ted? I hate to go off topic, but American Dad! is so far beyond okay that's it's ridiculous. It's one of the most consistent shows on television and is completely different to either of McFarlanes other shows and he has nothing to do with it for years. He helped co-create it and that's pretty much it. Everything about that show is pretty much Barker and Weitzman, to the point where McFarlane considers himself a fan who voices the show, and little else.goku the krump dancer wrote:I hardly call Macfarlane a genius, Ted was terrible and predictable much like Family Guy as of late 09 or 2010. Erm, so Battle of the Gods, hey? I'm thinking that it's doing well enough for them, but there will probably be some minor concessions in any future endeavours because it didn't quite meet their (arguably too high?) expectations. I have very little clue how the Japanese Box Office works, but is their target for the goal too high? Or with the not-sot-hot results from Kai a couple of years was were these projected results lower than they would normally be anyway?

Didn't show that at the Oscars. Was more interested in the Avengers crew. They all should have done it.Brodes wrote:He is a very smart, very talented, creative man. Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

Well that's probably the problem then, Family Guy has sucked since it got revived for the most part, there are some standout episodes here and there. But, I agree MacFarlane is smart, creative, but his 'I'm better than everyone' attitude annoys me to no end. You obviously wanna have pride in your work but, there's a point where it's going overboard.Brodes wrote:He is a very smart, very talented, creative man. I'm not surprised Ted did well but it just doesn't seem like a Japan friendly production (or would be a #1 there), the whole film screams out made for an American/English speaking audience (references, accents, etc.)
Any other DB VAs in the Japanese dub of Ted?

Well I don't really follow those franchises so I wouldn't know about Seth MacFarlane's involvement or lack there of. Consistency could be a good thing depending on if its consistently good, or it could be consistently bad or sub par. While I don't think American Dad is all that grate like you claim it to be I still hold it above the trash that Family Guy has become. I guess we're just gonna have to shake hands and agree to disagree on this subject though.Brodes wrote:I hate to go off topic, but American Dad! is so far beyond okay that's it's ridiculous. So much relief. Plus, my hopes for a sequel actually exist now. :3
At the very least, even if they don't make another one, at least they can say they made their goal. Toei wanted 3 billion via theaters in Japan and they got it.

It's also Box Office Mojo's metric, which is different from the one used by places like Cinema Today. Still, a psychological milestone is a psychological milestone....

Wow, so the giant green 'success' light in Toei's head office will turn on after all!
It's okay, everyone, you can sleep easy tonight - it has been a success! There's definitely now going to be a new 250 episode series and Toriyama will definitely resume the manga! Everyone relax!

I'm glad they hit the mark! I honestly thought (based on how well it all started) they'd surpass the goal by far but they got it at least.

Haha! Sadly enough I was considering editing my post on the off-chance that someone happened to take it that way. I can just imagine it now: 'It was on Kanzenshuu Forums! They wanted three billion yen, they got it. Of course, if they schedule right they might be able to get a fifteenth Dragon Ball Z film out for the same relative price, so I don't see why we won't see another film. Of course, I sort of doubt we'll see a budget increase, unfortunately.

I expect it to continue making a good deal of money once the DVD/Blu-Ray is released...
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

So they met their goal. Good on Toei.
So now we wait and see if it matters at all. Just like we were before they met it. Yay?

I'll definitely import the DVD/Blu-ray when it comes out.
