It looks way worse than the previous incomplete bluray release. The criticism is justified.

Well there are a lot of things wrong with this release such as
Dragon ball z level 1.2
Dragon ball z season 1 trailer
Dragon ball z level 1.2
Dragon ball z season 1 trailer
But I get what your saying when these were announced as 16:9 there were a lot of people wanting it to fail, and a lot of people bashing on it based on a compressed trailer they saw on Funimation's website. I'm not gonna judge the release until I see it myself or until blu ray.com posts their official review which ever comes first.

This is an 80s/90s animated all-ages show that was popular amongst kids. It's not some potent super weapon that might fall into the wrong hands that we have to protect from evil.

Hmmm. I can see why some people would dislike it compared in those shots, but as you see the screenshot isn't offical so to judge the release sorely on that is a bit harsh. And saying it's worse the the orange bricks is a bit of an over statement imo.

I completely agree that's why I'm still keeping my pre order I'll make up my mind once I see it in person.

My problem is the cropping. Even if it's selective, they wont be able to save everything. Some of the shots on the trailer prove that. But, it's not my place to prevent others from buyin it. I might get it for Namek cause I think it'll be an improvement over the orange bricks. But, I might wait cause I might be moving to Japan and then I'll just get the Dbox singles.

Sadly, I may have to cancel mine due to the region lock indicated on Funi's shop. But I just read about this cobra usb for the ps3 (seems too good to be true imo).
And fair enough eledoremassis02, personally I can stand the cropping.

Good point. Bulma's head is not her most important feature. We can stand to lose it.

Fair enough, we're looking at a compressed video that may not be final. But I stand by what I said. The trailer's footage looks worse than the orange bricks. But if this is the final color scheme, it's not going to look any better uncompressed (at least, not enough for it to matter). Maybe you disagree. However, I definitely don't enjoy getting pissed off at FUNimation. Even if this release is cropped, I wanted it to at least be an acceptable replacement for the orange bricks.

"Over saturation is easy. Just drag the slider to the right and there you are: instant interest. And certainly, the majority of the public likes saturated color images. In fact, if you want to quickly create a popular image, simply over saturate the colors and increase the contrast. While you may not achieve a sophisticated image, you will achieve an image that will please a less demanding audience." - Alain Briot

Choosing where to have the image cropped is like choosing where to have your leg amputated.

People who are saying that the trailer is not representative of the final quality of the product need to understand that there is no way in hell a bad encode of the trailer could cause such a dramatic change. You're bound to see macro-blocking and some visual artifacts, but the problems with the color scheme, saturation, detail, and linework are not going to be trailer-only.

Yes, but seeing it on a large HDTV with full resolution might affect enjoyability.

Go look at the level sets trailer on Funimation's website http://www.funimation.com/shows/dragon- ... -ray/anime
It looks nothing like what the level sets actually look like on blu ray it actually makes them look bad. There is a huge difference between watching a compressed trailer on your computer and watching the actual blu ray with a 25mbps bitrate on your Hdtv. The Funimation trailer probably had 1/10th of that bitrate if even that.

Not really, the colors are nearly identical and you can still tell it's pretty sharp. There's lots of macroblocking though.

With these screens from the new trailer, there's barely any macroblocking, and what's sharp looks very sharp, including the grain from the "past" footage. This new trailer has much better quality.

If that trailer is any indication, these are going to look frighteningly bad. Any chance we could get a Kickstarter for more Levels going?

Perhaps I'm old-fashioned, but I'm not going to pay FUNimation for the privilege of paying FUNimation.

You think this looks pretty sharp? The trailer for the level sets looks nothing like the actual level sets on blu ray.
Even the best encoding in the world can't help the fact that that trailer has around 1/10th of the bitrate of the actual blu ray.
