Yeah, I've been going over my Japaneses TV rips that I got back in the early 90s and the colors are the same with the Blu-ray shots, but comparing it to the Dragon Boxes(, the colors) are way off. It really brings me back (to) when I watched the old fansubbed VHSs.DragonBalllKaiHD wrote:After seeing the screenshots of Goku vs. Vegeta in Blu-Ray, I think I now understand why Funimation said they are the "original film" with "director approved color schemes." If you looked back in Kei's thread about DBZ's original broadcast that was recorded off the tape, you will see the similarity between of them. If that's the case, then that's pretty nice.
Maybe that's how Funimation's multi-generational copies look when you leave the colors alone.

I like the Dragon Box colours better in some pictures and the Blu-Rays in others

The Dragon Boxes look much better. In fact, in several of the examples given, there is a lot of detail lost. For instance, take a look at the insides of certain characters' ears; the detail has been crushed. You can also see that the lines are missing from the inside of Raditz's scouter, as it is completely black.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Smudging and loss of detail can easily be equated to the footage being from a compressed-for-quick-Internet-consumption ad, rather than the final product. It'll be best to judge the overall visual quality from that rather than these.
The colors look more or less like the ol' Syndication/Toonami-era colors I have vivid memories of. It's good to see that FUNi doesn't appear to be tampering with them.

There does appear to be a bit of a black crush, but that could be due to compression. I have no idea.
[quote="Brakus"]For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". The colours are generally darker, this wouldnt be caused by compression. Its true that the encode will have difficulty maintaining detail in dark areas, but regardless of this, the colors ARE darker and so detail WILL be lost (or at least harder to see) than the dragon box. This makes me sad ;(

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
I dunno, the colors in the trailer are too inconsistent for me to make any kind of judgement and the obvious compression, while it may not have any bearing on the colors, is a factor in the presentation. I'd just rather not put my faith in any kind of trailer, good or bad. Until I see more caps or uncompressed footage, I'm holding off my thoughts until the set comes out. Well, I've already bought the thing so it's at least as good as $20 as far as I've seen. Just gotta play the waiting game now. Hopefully somebody who ordered it from Right Stuf has a Blu-Ray drive on their PC so we can get caps as early as possible.

Dragon Box:

Blu-Ray:

Look inside of Piccolo's ear! We still have the same "darkness" issue - it's very tough to see those details.
I can distinctly remember watching a few scenes on the R2 DBoxes noticing the brightness brought out details I had never noticed. I wonder if the details here are just issues of the source or darkness issues altogether (need to play around with Photoshop and measure some brightness changes later for fun).
I've already ordered the first set, but that comparison is making me feel like I'm looking at the Season Sets again.

Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.
DB DBox color corrections & DBox color corrections.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
The darkness is probably just due to FUNimation's masters fading over time. You can tell because the blacks tend to be dark gray as opposed to "crushed" blacks. That could also explain the "dry" look lots of these episodes have.ect5150 wrote:I've already ordered the first set, but that comparison is making me feel like I'm looking at the Season Sets again.
These are definitely much better than the season sets though. These are nowhere near that level of brightness.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Actually, the "darkness" hasn't changed much from back when these eps were being edited for syndication.
The Saiyan invasion arc on Toonami was full of dark colors, a stark contrast to the DBox's brighter-yet-more-faded colors. The more saturated coloring seemed to start in Season 3 (I swear I noticed a distinct coloring difference going from "Goku... Super Saiyan?" to "Ginyu Assault".),

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
You know, the footage from these sets look a lot like the old Ocean singles, except in HD. (Yes, I know they're not, I just kinda get that vibe from it.)
Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
I have come across this before. Dark detail was never really allowed for SD TVs. Manly because they did not have a large enough contrast ratio. Therefor the luminance and color levels would be squashed together for a dvd. When Blu rays/HD TVs came out, dark detail was allowed because the contrast ratio Was higher and could be seen properly. So now you will have a separation of darker detail and brighter detail. Instead of it all being bunched together. Cheap Hd TV may not show dark detail and squash the colors back together or just show the picture poorly. Here is an example of dark detail on Batman Beyond Return of the Joker Dvd and Blu ray.ect5150 wrote:Dragon Box:

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
That's not dark detail, that's crushed blacks. It's actually an example of what's frequently wrong with how movies are presented now, as far as I'm concerned. The contrast is upped so much you can barely see the walls!
