Bills? Why? Why choose the worst of the names?
I hope that isn't giving us an idea as to what to expect from Funi when they eventually get to this.

James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

They wouldn't have named the characters Beers and Whisky. And "Bills" is one of the two spellings used on Japanese merchandise, the other being "Beers".Ryuman wrote:Bills? Why? Why choose the worst of the names?

It's really not hard to see how "Birusu" relates to "Virus", so it's always surprising when official stuff comes with names that are not "Birus" or "Beerus" (which sounds Egyptian for a God that has an Egyptian feel).Ryuman wrote:Bills? Why? Why choose the worst of the names?

But it's possible they want to keep the duo's names close in pronunciation, like "Birusu + Uisu", so they go "Bills + Wiss" to keep the two names similar.
But really, for a god, I think it sounds too much like a regular "Bill" name.
Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2013 Movie Thread: "Battle of Gods
Birus or something along those lines would've been perfectly fine. It's not like they've never been weird about how they've spelt names in Japan. Also, I didn't really bring up Whis' (Or in this case, Wiss') name. I think I can maayyybe let that one go.JeffJarrett wrote:They wouldn't have named the characters Beers and Whisky. Does this mean those will be the official spellings used across all international dubs? Or will this work like the various dubs of the series and each will have little differences?
Only asking because I'm not a fan of the Bills and Wiss spellings and would rather have something that preserves the puns better, like Beerus and Whis.

Personally I like Beers and Whis. I think "Beerus" requires too much explanation (beer and virus). I do say Birus when speaking his name, but I wouldn't mind it if Beers was used.Chuquita wrote:Does this mean those will be the official spellings used across all international dubs? An interviewer asks, "The soundtrack in Sonic 3 has become legendary. Is it true that you worked with Michael Jackson on it?" Takashi Iizuka kills all of our hopes and dreams by replying, "You know, those are just rumors, and SEGA does not want to say anything about them. So they will forever be just rumors..." WHY!?

Not a fan of 'Bills', myself. I'm on the 'Beers' team, it just works better IMO.
Also, they can do one of those cool images for Piccolo, but not one for Kuririn? I call foul!

Beers and Whis suits me as well. They are cool enough to pass and they have the DB name thing going on.

Bills and Wiss? Pretty sure those are the spellings used on DB Wikia.
This whole Diamond Films thing seems awfully suspicious...almost unprofessional in some aspects, like it's all done by fans. I know they do films other than DBZ, but the supposed official pages for the film that they're linking really seem like they're set up by fans.

Bills isn't a very intimating name.. I'd be disappointed if they used that for sure. And Wiss sounds too much like Wuss.

Meh, it's not my favorite version of the name (I prefer "Birus"), but it works.
Remember, one of the things about DragonBall villains that make them unique is that you can't judge them by their appearance or name. I mean, does "Piccolo" or "Buu" sound terrifying? And yet they were some of the biggest and most powerful villains at the time.

Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

Well, Bills can be used in puns and jokes - as shown by CashmanX.
Which means there's a risk Funimation and other rightholders around the world could actually think it's logical and that the humour of his name is based on our real lives, something like "much like in our own lives, the enemy is bills...".
So it is possible they won't even think twice and think "Bills? Yeah, that's surely the name and pun intended, let's use that!"

Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2013 Movie Thread: "Battle of Gods
I guess this is true in terms of pun preservation, but aesthetically, I hate the way "BILS" looks typed out and I don't like pronouncing it. So, if he absolutely can't be "BEERS" or "BEERUS" or "BIRUS", I will take "BILLS".Ryuman wrote:Bills? Why? Why choose the worst of the names?
