Re: J-Stars Victory VS+ (Western Release) for PS3/Vita/PS4
So question - did anyone in the US pre-order this and actually get the PlayStation themes? I contacted GameStop earlier and they couldn't see anything from their end about having any, and told me to get in touch with Bandai Namco, which I've been attempting to do. I looked up the picture of the pre-order stuff from a while back though, and happened to notice that the big picture that listed the themes was for the EU release...so now I'm almost wondering if the themes were EU only or something?

I purchased the game digitally and the theme downloaded automatically. Don't know how it works with the physical copy, you should've got a code inside the game case. Maybe Gamestop only had a few in stock or something.

Is this game good? Like objectively good?
Because I am fan of the few Jump titles and have a history with mash-up games, that after I play with my favorites, the game ends on the shelf.

The story mode is very repetitive, tedious and a chore to complete. The editing system for the characters is also quite limited. Although, the combat is incredibly varied, well balanced and you can pretty much make up your own combos for every character. However, the star feature of this game is versus mode and online. It's a crapload of fun when playing against people or with your friends online. My recommendation would be to plough through the story mode to gain enough points to buy all the characters and then go straight to online and never look back.MCDaveG wrote:Is this game good? How does the editing system work?
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

You basically buy cards for specific characters that boost their attributes, such as health and attack damage, using J-Points you gain from winning battles and completing quests in J-Adventure or Victory Road.Saiga wrote:How does the editing system work?

There's no getting around the fact that it's repetitive, but tedious and a chore to complete? That all depends on what you're coming to it for, I'd say.Lord Beerus wrote:The story mode is very repetitive, tedious and a chore to complete.
If you're looking for a super intense story, something that keeps you guessing as to what's going on, or anything that's going to be super memorable? Then yeah, the story mode is pretty weak in that regard. But if you know at least a handful of the series represented in it - or heck, if you happen to know most of them and have at least heard or read a little bit about the ones you don't actually know (I made it a point to read up on some of the more obscure things like Chinyuki on Wiki a bit before the game came in), and you just sit back to enjoy seeing the banter between some of your favorite characters? In that case, it's great entertainment. I've been loving it for that, personally.
That said though, I'm just now wrapping up Luffy's story mode, and it was definitely a long, slow burn. So maybe I'll feel less inclined to defend it after trudging through the other three variations...but as of now, I'm pretty pleased with it. It does basically all that I really expected the story mode for something like this to do.

Re: J-Stars Victory VS+ (Western Release) for PS3/Vita/PS4
Having owned it for a few days now, I'd say that it's a fun, untaxing, and simplistic brawler. It's button-mashing, leave-your-brain-at-the-door stuff, and as has been stated prior, is fairly repetitive.
The game comes into it's own in terms the attack differences and subtle nuances of each character. The game is a jam-packed love letter to Shonen Jump, so if you're familiar with or a big fan of multiple Jump titles then it's a game that, despite it's drawbacks, will no doubt put a smile on your face. For me, even the little interactions between characters from different franchises is quite a fun little addition in itself.
In total honesty, though, if you're thinking of buying the game just for its Dragonball elements then don't bother.

Yeah I find it funny that despite the fact that I love both Bleach and Dragonball equally I always end up maining Ichigo whenever he's in. Same goes for Super Smash Flash 2. Ironic considering how I made FCs for both series and yet the last few months I've been putting more effort into my DBZ FC.
Re: J-Stars Victory VS+ (Western Release) for PS3/Vita/PS4
I'm the one, and I guess that'd be because Dragon Ball has no shortage of video game representation while Bleach hasn't had much. I own most of the ones to have been released outside of Japan, and it's still not enough.BlazingBarrrager wrote:Yeah I find it funny that despite the fact that I love both Bleach and Dragonball equally I always end up maining Ichigo whenever he's in. But Rukia not being playable probably means I won't pick up J Stars. I don't think it's worth getting the game for two characters xD

Yeah that's probably why, though the blame for most of the lack of imports I believe is Sony's doing since most/all games on Nintendo systems were imported by Sega...I think.Saiga wrote:I'm the one, and I guess that'd be because Dragon Ball has no shortage of video game representation while Bleach hasn't had much. Well that and I just love Ichigo's fighting style. Basically fights using hyper-speed, close range combat while having a big, powerful Sword Beam technique as a ranged attack. He also has a freaken badass outfit for his Bankai. Also with Rukia, just be thankful she's in the game at all. I mean for crying out loud Renji, Uryu, Chad, and Orihime don't even get an NPC appearance. But yeah regardless the game is so much fun and I can't wait to try out other characters besides Goku and Vegeta.
Re: J-Stars Victory VS+ (Western Release) for PS3/Vita/PS4
I actually haven't messed around much with the DBZ characters, I mean, sometimes I use Vegeta just to spam some Big Bangs and stuff during player matches but I've spend so much more time trying out everyone else, I currently main Seiya, Tsuna and Ace.

Re: J-Stars Victory VS+ (Western Release) for PS3/Vita/PS4
I've also not used the DBZ characters too awful much. Heck, outside of having Goku as my AI partner a fair amount, I only just used Vegeta and Freeza when playing against my girlfriend yesterday. I've only used the Namek stage a few times too.
Really the DB inclusion in the game is...I don't want to say the least appealing thing to me, as I'm glad it's represented and would have been shocked and annoyed if it wasn't...but I can play as them in so many other games, that really all they bring to the table for me is getting to see them interact with characters they've never met before.
I've been maining Luffy and Yusuke the most so far, but I've used Kenshin a fair amount as well. I'm still working my way through the second Story Mode (the Naruto, Yusuke, and Gon one), but also played a bit of Victory Road earlier too. On a slight break at the moment though, don't want to burn myself out of the game too quickly.

Freeza is great. His Death Beam and Death Slash are great. The little bubble he can use to trap opponents and then make it explode is great. I love using the DB characters sometimes.

It's just hard for me to want to play as Vegeta when having to listen to his Japanase voice. It just doesn't sound...fitting to me. Not saying that Chris Sabat's performance with Vegeta is so much better, but it's just something I can relate to more. Same with Goku to a much lesser extent. Again, not saying the American VAs are the best, but I can just relate to them more than the Japanese VAs.SSJ God Gogeta wrote:I personally like playing as Goku. Though I'm sure you've probably heard Horikawa's Vegeta in other places, it does merit mentioning that he sounds really, REALLY off in J-Stars for some reason. Like, I almost didn't even think it was him, or something. I dunno if he was sick, or if he was being given some really odd direction, or what, but it's just radically different from how he sounds everywhere else.BlazingBarrrager wrote:It's just hard for me to want to play as Vegeta when having to listen to his Japanase voice. Yeah I have heard his voice a couple of times like in the 2008 OVA and on some characters of him for M.U.G.E.N. so I am familiar with how he sounds, but I can agree that his performance in J-Stars is a bit off.Gyt Kaliba wrote:Though I'm sure you've probably heard Horikawa's Vegeta in other places, it does merit mentioning that he sounds really, REALLY off in J-Stars for some reason. Vegeta has a hit confirm into his Ultimate, Goku can't beat that, I also love Vegeta's keep away options, air Ki-Blasts into Energy Volley is super satisfiyng.SSJ God Gogeta wrote:I personally like playing as Goku. I just wish Vegeta was just as good...

Re: J-Stars Victory VS+ (Western Release) for PS3/Vita/PS4
I just can't hit shit with Vegeta... His energy blast volley always misses or does barley any damage for me. Big Bag Attack is good for the most part. I just don't like how when I fire it from above it always goes over the enemy's head, it looks like it hits them but nope... Final Flash I don't have a problem with. There was however one time where someone just completely tanked it twice but that was about it.
Goku in my opinion is just easier to use while Vegeta is just a pain... Gonna need to try out Freeza and see how good he is.
All in all I need to get better with Vegeta.
