Would someone please explain the joke in one of the first abridged episodes? When Raditz is about to attack he says Double Sunday but the actors start struggling with the mic and repeat the scene

Double Sunday is the name of one of Raditz's attacks in the Budokai games. This name was simply given since none of his attacks actually had names, so they were all named with "day" themes. Actually, when he raises one arm up, it looks more like a Saturday Crush.

Why did one want to use it and the other didn't?

Because it's not an actual attack from the show, so they were making a joke out of it.

Names of Earth days no less; a planet that he was visiting for the first time. Other planets would have different rotations and orbit times and certainly wouldn't follow the Gregorian calender.

Which especially makes dub Freeza's idioms and colloquial phrases all the more silly. "Pop Goes the Weasel," "Ride 'em Cowboy," ext. ext. I can accept that everybody in the universe speaks the same language and uses a universal currency (which are both wild impossibilities in reality), but phrases that stem from Earth children songs and pop culture, nope. As far as language goes, I'm going to assume that every Saiyan child is given a Babel Fish when they are born. Oh yeah and "this planet will explode in five minutes" should have been "this planet will explode in five Floogalflorts." That would have worked in two ways, one we don't know how long a Floogalflort is. And two, Freeza doesn't know how long a minute is.

As the Gregorian calendar is the product of Pope Gregory XIII in the year 1582, who made it as a correction/update to the Julian calendar that Julius Caesar instituted in 46 BC... Earth wouldn't use the Gregorian calendar in Dragonball.

Technically, the Dragonball universe has a totally different time-space, so for all we know, it's 1000 years into the future set in a time after some sort of cataclysmic event that restarted the year numbering system.

Ex-Dubbie369 partially explained it, but there's more to it then that.

In the original dub of Dragon Ball Z with Ocean Studios doing the voices, Raditz says "I call this one keep your eye on the birdie!" In between the original dub and the FUNimation in-house "Ultimate Uncut" redub, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai came out for the PlayStation 2, in which Raditz has an attack called Double Sunday. A few years after Budokai's release, in the Ultimate Uncut dub of the same scene, instead of Raditz saying "I call this one keep your eye on the birdie!" he says "I call this one Double Sunday!". The two Abridged actors fight over what the actual name of the attack is. Also, for the record, Raditz isn't saying either of those in the Japanese version.

It's always fun when people try to mix reality into Dragon Ball. :P

I'm just kidding.

But I love that "Ride em' Cowboy" line! It's so...so...

... Positively EVIL

Such hard work requires a soul to be paid for. I suggest we offer up Vegeta3986's pride.

...actually with the way all of his character's end up dead...

...er...
Tell him I love him.

Reminds me of Psaros's DBZ Uncensored. Every time the dub made a reference to American or Earth culture or made a remark about "going the way of the dinosaurs", he went into a nerd rage about how that didn't exist in Dragon Ball or how dinosaurs were still alive. He seemed more angry about the "real world" references than about anything else the dub messed up, to be honest. Don't get me wrong, I loved DBZU overall.

Which brings me to another question... there's no Japan in Dragon Ball... so why's everyone speaking Japanese? I wonder if someone seriously asked that.

Oh right, DBZA. What I liked about it: It was funny, for one. I appreciated that every other joke wasn't about how much the dub sucks. LittleKuriboh seems to like harping on the fact that 4kids butchered Yu-Gi-Oh quite a lot. He really seemed to like making fun of that "ghost of a chance" line, and every time something violent happens one of the characters makes a remark about 4kids censoring it. I still find YGO:TAS funny, of course. I like how DBZA doesn't rely too much on these kinds of jokes. I bet some people (myself included) were expecting a reference to "your father is a scientist," for one. I liked the Christopher Walken joke too, for some reason.

What I didn't like: Really really minor thing. I think I'm in the minority here, but the Japanese attack terms didn't sound "right" (yes, I know they're the right terms, but I'm not sure how else to say it) especially since the voices are imitating Funi's VAs. I don't pick sides in "dub vs sub" (I enjoy DB in all its adaptations, even given how poorly Funimation managed it) arguments. I know "Special Beam Cannon" and "Destructo Disc" sound really stupid and that "Tien" isn't the character's name; nonetheless, it felt weird hearing an approximation of the English VAs saying his real name. And then there was Vegeta's Oozaru form - I know "Special Beam Cannon" isn't anywhere close to an accurate translation, but I always thought Oozaru literally meant something like "great ape" or "great monkey." It's not just DBZ(A), either; I'd probably say the same thing if LittleKuriboh suddenly had his main character summon a "Black Magician," for instance (not a jab at the above poster). But, like I said, a really minor quip. I just felt like saying it.

As far as season 2 goes, I'm eagerly looking forward to it. I'm especially looking forward to how TFS portrays Freeza and his minions. There was another abridged series that a few might be familiar with who decided to make season 2 a continuous string of gay jokes. I'd admit Freeza himself makes it too easy to do this kind of joke in excess, but I for one was never a fan of gay jokes. If I have to watch Freeza and Ginyu constantly reminding characters and viewers that they're homosexual in every scene, I'll do it only because I still expect the rest of the characters to be funny enough to make up for it.

I take no offense. :D

I think one must seperate themselves from any influence by the dub in such a fashion that the original becomes 'wrong', otherwise you'll just wind up bothering yourself.

And then you have lines in the original about Godzilla and Gamera, or (in the eighth movie) Kuririn being the best singer in Japan...

I just noticed both Vegeta3986 and Lanipator are listed as Raditz on the YouTube page, a "1/2" and a "2/2". Why is that? ^^;

Because Raditz 1/6 and Raditz 5/6 may confuse people even MORE.

Remember in the first episode how the two people fought over the mike due to the name of Raditz's attack? The VA changed after that!
