I'm actually interested in some kind of comparison thread between characters in the JPN and US versions.penguintruth wrote:Subtleties and eccentricities are what separate interesting, compelling characters from generic ones. Guess which the Funimation versions are?

Aw man I wanted to do it! Oh well. I can't wait to see what you come up with. Should be pretty interesting.laserkid wrote:That's not a bad idea, I'll be back with something along those lines in a bit.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

I could compile something similar, but I'd probably just end up using snarky, humorous pictures to represent the dub-versions of the characters, and that might end up counter-productive.

This took longer then I thought it would (mainly because I got invited to dinner by my folks), but here's my comparison chart. This is my take on it, so feel free to disagree with it, but if you do please give your reasons, rather then just arguing. It's not as though I'm some all knowing source, this is just my take on it. Sooo...

Damn, this is nice. Looking forward to the rest of the comparison.
Goku's more serious in the dub, though? I thought they kept his lighthearted attitude, they just increased his intelligence somewhat and removed some of the country folksy flavor from him. Of course, I haven't watched the dub since 2004, so...

That's about it. He's still carefree and loose in the dub.Dr. Casey wrote: Goku's more serious in the dub, though? But I will say that, if anything, he is more serious when he's fighting.

Yeah, I definitely think they made Goku a few IQ points higher in the dub, not just made him "more serious". There are times when Japanese Goku can be SERIOUS BUSINESS, too.
Goku comes off as being sort of a wiseass in the dub, whereas in Japanese, he doesn't really understand sarcasm that well.

Well, I'd argue that dub-Goku still loves a good fight; didn't he say something like that in the Broly movie before reading and sports?
. He is a bit more of a Superman though.
I'd like to tackle Vegeta tomorrow if that's okay.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
I think Vegeta is too inconsistent in the dub. Sometimes they get him right, other times not at all. It would be hard to get a profile on him.

Going back to the original question, I find I can't watch any version of the Pilaf saga without it being the Saban dub. Which is odd, because I can't stand the anime (outside specials, movies, and certain Saiyan saga eps), let alone the dubs, let alone the Saban-era dubs. O_o

Some of these comparisons seem kind of insulting on the dub side, thus making them a little pointless.

Truth be told, I look at that and I agree, but then I think about it. You really picked out the corniest lines from the dub (like for Goku being ally to justice and all that). The truth is that Goku is still a carefree idiot in the dub, he does find fighting to be fun and exciting, and yes loves his family, but the story itself insinuates he tends to forget about them. And in the dub, Yamcha is still very knowledgeable in martial arts. And I don't think Roshi is much different between the two versions.
