Yeesh. The blurb on the back of the box is suffering from so much extreme hard core-ness, I think it must have run away during the writing stages and hid somewhere in the early '90s... "An amped-up audio experience that will make my ears beg for mercy"...? Um, no thanks...

Wow at performnaces of Krillin, Vegeta, and Chiaotzu, really well done. Not so sure about Gregory or Bulma. Bulma may take some getting use to.

Tenshinhan still sounds kind of weak. Chaozu sounds the same as usual, so I don't know why they bothered replacing his voice. Chris Sabat's Piccolo has definitely improved. Monica Rial's Bulma is excellent. Sonny Strait's Kuririn is stilly pretty good. Oh, and I guess the new Gregory works. I never really noticed Gregory's voice, anyway.

But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Oh, they replaced Chaozu's voice? It sounds better, but I thought it was the same voice actor just by listening to it. What an amazing performance just at keeping the voice so close the original and at the same time improving on it.

It's one of the songs from the Kai soundtrack. I don't remember what it's called, though. One instance where you can hear it is in episode 7 when it shows the humans' progress training with Kami just before the eyecatch.

I prefer the Blu-ray menu's music by far, but that's because the track used (the one from episode 12 when Goku first shows up and lands) is one of my favorite Kai tracks.

Dragon Box comparison:

Kai's colors look a bit better, but the DVNR makes it look a bit blurry, and the background no longer has its texture. Also, Kai's color correction makes the top of Goku's hair have an overblown bright spot, which is very barely noticeable on the Dragon Box Z footage/

Everything sounds good for the most part. New Gregory sounds kind of annoying, but then again I don't even remember what Old Gregory sounded like. ^^;;;

I'm really liking Kuririn, Bulma, Gohan, Piccolo, and what I've heard so far of Vegeta.

What does New Mr. Popo sound like, btw?
On hiatus.

I love Gregory's voice! It is a LOT better this time around. The dub is a hell of a lot more accurate that's for sure.

I thought those spots were lens flare or something which, as opposed to being caused by DVNR, were just flaws in the original footage that were mostly fixed for the DBox version.

I notice that the Dragon Box footage seems significantly grainier, judging from those pictures.

From what I understand, in Japan they consider grain to be part of the picture. This is a good thing for animated shows because using DVNR to smooth over the grain removes detail. Done correctly, only a small amount of detail is sacrificed for a smoother picture that cleans up much of the dirt and such. As the Dragon Box is supposed to contain the highest visual quality for DBZ on DVD, the grain is left there and instead the picture was manually restored frame-by-frame in order to make it virtually free of imperfections.

I can't seem to find it right now, but there is a picture floating around that shows the differences between the original film and the cleaned up version for the Dragon Box. For anyone who knows what I'm talking about, it's the one that shows the "dots" that weren't cleaned up because they are actually Tenshinhan and Chaozu in the distance as they're flying in toward the screen during the opening.

When comparing the two, the Dragon Box is actually superior based on preservation-of-detail and cleanliness of the original animation frames. It all depends on what you want, either the original series in its highest quality available to consumers or a faster-paced reversion at a decent quality meant to celebrate 20 years of the original work, as to which version (DBZ or Kai) of the series you want if it comes down to you only getting one or the other.

Of course, none of that takes the dub of either into consideration. I'm basing my comments solely on the assumption that you'd be watching either in Japanese.

I'm pretty sure the reason Kai was DVNRed was because mixing old grainy animation with crystal-clear digital animation would look even more awkward than Kai does now.

I just have to say this about Tenshinhan's acting there.

I love it. I absolutely love it. Why? Because yes, his friend is about to die and yes, he does sound like he's holding back a bit. But it sounds more like he's horrified and paralyzed in place, like there's nothing he can do while he processes, "He's going to kill himself." It's actually a really good performance, more subtle than just yelling and screaming.

Thought I was the only one who thought his performance was better.

Subtlety is everything.

I still think the most improved voice is Yamcha though.

Oh, and today's KAI quote of the day is "SHUT UP AND TAKE OFF YOUR TUNIC"!!

Yesterday's was:

Goku - "Note to self: Do not go to Hell."

Today's is:

Piccolo - "Shut up and take off your tunic!"

Tomorrow should be one of these two:

Krillin - "D'aaaaaahh!!!!"

Kaio - "Deedahdoodah deedahdoodah deedahdoodahdee!"

I was thinking more along the lines of "Cocky Green Antenna-Having Bastard".

Since there is something, that I have not properly understood:

are the dvds and blu-rays now region-free ???
The word "KAI" means in the old North Germanic language Frisian "Kämpfer engl. Fighter" respectively "Krieger engl. Warrior"!
