Which seems to be one of the cornerstones of Kai hate. So many people think the Nicktoons cut is the only cut and that the Toonami cut was uncensored. It baffles me that people can wear such thick nostalgia glasses. At some point they become helmets.TheGmGoken wrote:Kai dvd is uncutRoland_ELoG wrote:What about violence censorship? To what level is Kai uncensored? Early Funimation (Ocean days) had those hilarious crudely drawn stars in place of impact frames. Toonami's airing made use of the word "destroy" and made blood into spit, and blood stains into black dirt.
Where does Kai fall? I was under the impression that even the DVDs have some editing.

That is almost entirely gone by the Freeza arc due to a shift in editors, I believe.
The only other stuff that's been removed is some coughed up blood from Vegeta is a few scenes. Nothing like what they did for TV. You honestly wouldn't notice unless you knew what you were looking for.

Well I'm pretty bloodthirsty. I have been meaning to give Kai the full sit-through one of these days, not in English though. I don't have the strength to withstand the Colleen Clinkenbeard Gohan voice.

It's not that bad, it's a believeable voice for a 4-10 year old kid, which is what we see from Gohan from the Saiyan to Cell arcs. Plus Chris Ayres Freeza is easily the most well cast character in this dub. When you get to the Freeza arc you should watch it in English to check his performance out. Total 180 of how Freeza used to be portrayed. Niw he's present like he was in the Japanese version.Roland_ELoG wrote:Well I'm pretty bloodthirsty. Re: Why do so many American fans hate Kai?
Oh here we go. I'm about to erode all nerd-cred I may have, at one point had. Fair warning.
I love the Linda Young Freeza voice. It's weird and alien (no offense Mrs. Young...). I think it's kinda cool when villains(especially non-human ones) have creepy non-human voices. Why should an alien, and an alien with no clear gender, have a "normal dude" voice? That's probably why I also like the raspy creepy voices for Cell and Buu.
I've heard the Chris Ayres voice, and it's a classier performance to be sure. Still not "my thang" though.

Re: Why do so many American fans hate Kai?
I'm not the much of a fan of Young's Freeza either (just feel like she was miscast and had tried her best to make the best out of the iffy writing of the first DBZ dub), but I respect your opinion. That's the beauty of opinions, we may not agree, but we're both entitled to think what we want and I won't hate on anybody for liking it. The worst I'd do is just point out that it's not really an accurate interpretation of Freeza, but that doesn't sound like a bad thing to say.Roland_ELoG wrote:I've heard the Chris Ayres voice, and it's a classier performance to be sure. Re: Why do so many American fans hate Kai?
Sure but why is it inaccurate? Freeza is an alien, why apply normal-dude characteristics to an alien, probably hundreds of years old, maybe genderless, and as sadistic as a motherfucker?
I like it just because it makes Freeza less human. Which just sounds so awful to say about Linda Young's voice.
hahaha

Re: Why do so many American fans hate Kai?
It's more the writing than anything. Ayres Freeza has a cold, gentleman, condescending sadistic air (also he has a similar tone to Ryuusei Nakao's Freeza) to it in the beginning and gradually drops the gentleman façade and starts losing it in the end vs. Goku. Part of it is the writing and part of it is that Ayres is a damn great actor. It would be interesting though to see what Linda Young's Freea would sound like with assuming they would probably direct her the same way Ayres was directed.

Re: Why do so many American fans hate Kai?
Imagine, Funimation redoing the series with the same music team and the same cast... but a more careful, modern eye to the production side of things. The soundtrack would be better because it wouldn't have to be constant for the whole episode. And the cast could really give more subtlety. Ahhhhh dreams.
Ayres and Nakao's versions of Freeza both have that politeness thing going on. Japanese polite speech hardly translates at all, which is I guess why they went for the upper crust British affectation.
The more I think about it the more of a toss up it is. The script for Funimation's dub during the Freeza arc was just godawful, and only slightly improved by the redubbing. It reminds me of the Emperor's "I'm afraid the deflector shield will be quite operational when your friends (strange pause) arrive!"

I know. Really turns my stomach.

Agreed. I didn't like Colleen Clinkenbeard at first doing the voice of Gohan but after awhile it grew on me and I feel that she actually sounds better than Stephanie Nadolny did in the first Funi Dub. (No offense to Stephanie Nadolny...) She gave the character a voice that is appropriate to what a 4-11 year old should sound like.SSJ4 Furanki wrote:It's not that bad, it's a believeable voice for a 4-10 year old kid, which is what we see from Gohan from the Saiyan to Cell arcs. I prefer Nadolny to Clinkenbeard but your absolutely right Nadolny does not sound like a four year old. She sounded like a 9--11 year old boy the whole time, which in my opinion is better than Clinkenbeard who sounded like a girl the whole time...Clinkenbeard just makes Gohan sound extra whiny and he did not need any help in that department...but at least Kai's Gohan is not going "Daddy" when he's 10Blu-ray_Mistress wrote:Agreed.
