Smallville also blows.

That post knocked what little hope I had about this movie out of me. I'm still going to see it for the train wreck. But as a Dragonball movie I'm not expecting anything good.

I'll go see it just for the sake of promoting Dragonball (and all other forms of anime/anime adaptations) in America. if they keep making and dubbing them, they'll eventually get it right...I hope. :(

I doubt it. The kids don't seem interested in the "right" version.

Note Piccolo's eyes up top.
*Cringes*
So far I'm not very keen on that Goku. I think he looks like an evil stoner in that promotional photo. The hair makes me cringe the most. He looks like he had a run-in with an electrical socket from hell.

I think my brain exploded. I'm trying to be okay with this movie... but it's not working.

However, I love "Roshi"'s shirt. It's the one appropriate thing I see in that poster. Heh.

I like Chatwin's shirt. If they made it available I would probably get one. :P

The poster is kind of a silly thing to complain about if you ask me. >>

Are those supposed to be Piccolo's eyes in the background? Doesn't exactly reveal much of him if it is, its barely noticable.

And anime!Goku's hair doesn't?

Anyway . . . yeah, I don't really like the poster much, either. I think Emmy Rossum looks pretty badass, but that's about all I can really say for it (I'm kinda ambivalent). Hopefully once it gets closer to the release date, we'll get some different (i.e. better) promotional material . . . some that doesn't involve randomly floating dragon balls and Goku not being in his gi. =/

Well I am a little late for a comment but after everyone mentionedthe grim faces and compared the cover to other comics, I went back and checked movie covers of funi's releases.... not too many smiles there either.

I knew they were gonna pick an Anglo for the role of Goku but someone funnier with a bit of pizzaz and a sense of strength should be used. I think it was Dane Cook(?) for Vlade Trinity's male supporting vampire hunter. He kinda suits Goku... well as much as any person I can think of at the moment.

If they want to start in Goku's adolescence couldnt they have chosen something a bit more country than the cliche school boy approach to rising over adversity.

Even finding him in the woods like a modern day Mowgli would have been better.

As far as the hair goes... I really don''t know how they could have dealt with that 'issue.' But perhaps someone with a natural condition to spikey thick hair would have worked better.

Acting skills are only moderately important, he only has three moods, clueless, amused and angry; so they should have at least worked on his appearance a bit more.

Also orange Gi's work in cartoons, but not in real life. Orange doesnt seem to work well with almost anything in real life except maybe cars.... and cartoons...

Their caste doesn't even seem approachable. Every character just about ...

*one aside, holy moly the DARK KNIGHT IS ALMOST OUT KICK BUTT COMMERCIAL!!!*

Every character in Dragon Ball was already relatable; not individually but between all the characters, that is part of the charm.

I certainly hope though that they choose their own creative edge rather than emulating a specific chapter of Dragon Ball. It worked for the animated DBZ movies and as much as I would like to see a DESCENT live action film that runs through the series, I have a feeling if it did it would turn out like Mortal Kombat Annihilation.

Goku will be having the orange gi, just not until the point in the movie where he actually begins training under Roshi. They haven't started using it for promotional material yet. There was a leaked picture of Chatwin's stunt double in the outfit a while back, though.

I have no idea what you're talking about, I look AWESOME in an orange gi :P

That's not the part about the costume designs that worries me. What frightens me is they couldn't get basic things right... Goku does not have light eyes (in base form), and Bulma does not have dark eyes. Would it have been IMPOSSIBLE to give them colored contacts?

I know I'm just nit-picky, but come on... cosplayers on a 100 dollar budget look more like Dragon Ball characters than professionals with a 100 million dollar budget.

I lay all my hopes in James Marsters appearance.

I don't think its nit-picky at all; the eye color thing does bother me, along with the fact that I've seen and know that real Goku hair can be pulled off.

I know the above's a Goten cosplay, but the hairstyle's identical to Goku's.

It can be done.

The idea of Son Goku having his yellow-orange gi came from real life. You can ask Buddha.

Those pictures are my exact point! Cosplayers do a much better job. And I hate people saying that "because its an anime" or "nobody's real hair does that" as some kind of justifiable excuse. Look at characters in Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, etc.

Wookies aren't real, but nobody complains about that. It's a fantasy movie, it can be over the top and true to the original Dragon Ball's appearance without looking completely corny. If Piccolo is going to be pointy eared and green, Bulma should have blue hair and blue eyes, ChiChi should have her hair pulled back with the two sections of hair that frame her face... and Goku should have HIS hair! It's his trademark (along with being MUSCULAR and his orange dogi)!

And on another note, the hair on that Goten is awesome. I wish my wig looked as good as that.

Not to support Chatwin, by any means, but,

He's more lean and fit when he's 18, not muscular.

Still bigger than Chatwin, though.

...Which is exactly what Toonami did. Their first intro (out of two, with the second being for the Piccolo episodes) was almost entirely 21st Budoukai footage. I believe their first commercial before it premiered was mostly 21st Budoukai orange dougi, too.

He was still muscular though. I know Goku didn't get more beefy until his training with Kaio, but still. Chatwin looks like he'll blow over if the wind is too strong.

True, but Goku-sa from the anime/manga makes it look good.

As much as I dislike how some of the characters turned out in the movie adaption they should NOT look like carbon copies of their anime counterparts. When they start running around looking like cosplayers that's when the movie gets awfully corny and laughed at because some actor is running around with a 20 inch wig on and dressing in bright green. You have to draw the line somewhere between cartoon and reality, unfortunately what we have now is drawn more towards the reality side but I'd rather have that then the movie looking like ANYONE in those cosplay pics.

Another example of the gap between cartoon and reality is the Green Goblin in the Spiderman movies, imagine how he would look if they religiously followed his original comic book appearance. Instead they opted for more of a high-tech armour instead of a skintight purple vest and jester hat, yet he still had the spirit of the Green Goblin.

The reason I love Bulma so much in that new poster is because she looks a hell of a lot like the Bulma on the Dragonball manga cover (issue 10). I feel THAT is how you do a live action adaption of a character.

To be honest, Goblin's suit looked like a Power Ranger villain. But William Defoe is so damn awesome, he made it work.

And I agree the line has to be drawn somewhere. And honestly, I like everyone so far, except Goku -- and not because of his hair style or his clothes. It's the complete mook expression that Son Goku never had at any time ever. Even in DBZ, which they're so desperately trying to make this, Goku was all SMILES and CHUCKLES. He's one HAPPY MOFO. And when he gets angry, he gets angry. He's an extremely expressive character, even for an anime character, who wears his emotions on his sleeves. Chatwin's Goku, so far in every shot, doesn't so much look like he has emotions on his sleeve, as much as he needs to be spoon fed and changed by a day nurse.
