That's fine but look at Raditz's crater in the level sets, it's crushed when compared to the dragon boxes.
That problem only exists on episode 1, Funimations master of that episode is terrible. The rest of the episodes are fine and no where near as bad as the scenes shown in this trailer.

It's worth pointing out (not worth much) that the Orange Bricks started looking a bit better as they continued. I bought the first few, and then I bought season 8 to compare to my singles and the equivalent episodes in the US Dragon Box. It was for a term project presentation in Japanese 411 (I got an A).

The first few seasons of the orange bricks, even up to 3rd, look pretty rough with washed out colors, and bad loss of detail during scenes with jitter. Season 8 though looks much improved. I suspect they toned the DVNR down a bit as the release continued. Almost all of our points of comparison are taken from the first few episodes, since every home media release reliably included those episodes. However the first few episodes are not always indicative of the entire set.

Side note. Referring to the oldschool FUNi DVD sets as "singles" makes me feel dirty and used.
A YouTube channel with no AMVs on it? I know, it's hard to believe.

When I look at the background on those pictures, I find it weird that they would actually green-light this just to get rid off the grain (which is the enemy, I agree... but not to that cost, I think TV's un-grain filters would somehow ultimately look better and less "destructive" even pushed to the max).
It really looks like a totally different style than what the backgrounds were meant to look like. And it all looks very... "simplistic" somehow.
Again, the backgrounds are the most shocking thing to me.

Much as I don't like the Levels for being much too grainy and having washed out colors (therefore feeling like you're watching an old VHS), I don't like the style in this new trailer either.
It's really like having seen two extremes, what one doesn't do enough, the other does way too much.

At least, if not better, this release - if it is like the trailer - would give a new way of watching the show, with a new style and a different feel. But I wouldn't say it's better in any way.

But as some people have pointed out, we can't properly judge from a trailer, since it is meant to hype up the release for the general audience, so they might have pushed their filters to the extreme for the trailer video itself, so that even people who barely even watched the show would be like "okay, I see they've cleaned it up compared to what I see on TV sometimes, it's really remastered for Blu-Ray". It might be different and more subtle on the actual release, so we'll have to wait and see.

This is weird since the making-of video on the Levels did mention that they realized grain could not be taken out without taking out the details and now they completely ignore what they've stated themselves.
It's like saying "we've finally realized how to respect the original material and what was the right thing to do... so let's not respect it and let's not do the right thing to do".
But hey, if people didn't buy the Levels enough to cover the cost of the remastering process, it's logical that they would say "if that's not what they want, it means they want the opposite kind of remaster, let's give it to them and this time they'll buy it!". Might be sad, but it makes sense from a business point of view, I guess.

I linked this thread to Funimation's facebook and I actually saw a few people like the post and agree with that I said.

I just assumed a lot of those bad reviews were written by users from this forum.

There were a total of 28 reviews when I looked on Amazon. 28 isn't really representative sample of who is going to purchase it.

Well, out of the 28 reviews, majority of them are negative, which implies that the majority who actually know about these new Blu-Rays are giving them negative reactions (and judging from the YouTube comments, customer reviews from online stores, and the comments from numerous DBZ forums online, it seems to be that case). Wouldn't you think?

Which is why I thought it was just users from this forum trying to warn people about this release and trying to keep people from buying it.

I'm in the same boat. Don't get me wrong, I'm disappointed with this release, as well, but I can't help but think most of the reviews on Amazon are from people who at least lurk these forums.

Never underestimate the power of reading a script designed for best PR. Steve Franco is probably still the one that spearheaded the transfer. All in all, it seems like he knows what he's talking about, but is giving FUNimation what they want for a good price.

He's said Dragonball will never bring in the kind of money to warrant a full remaster in the past. Guess he was right after all.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
I really do wish they'd put out a release with as little clean up as possible. It's the best we'd get out of FUNimation.

My own post to funimation which links anyone to this topic.

It's negative everywhere, I really hope they're trying to make us think it's the worst thing ever done to peak our curiosity and blow our minds later but It's Funimation which likely that won't happen.

I do agree that the level sets had some washed out colors but if they did some color correction "properly" maybe sales would have been better? I still like how it turned out and it seems they were doing something similar to the dragonbox, just a clean up but geez how much does a freaking cleanup cost?

The colors of the level sets weren't washed out they had the correct colors and they weren't plagued with the horrible red/pink tint that the dragon boxes had.

No I don't - usually those that are the most displeased are the most vocal. Those that are please are usually complacent.

It's like going to work - out of 100 customers, which ones usually talk to your boss? The 95 you helped with no problem? Or the 5 that didn't get their way?

His Level skin tone makes him look like an action figure.
