I think he's referring more to the fact that it's been out for almost a year, as opposed to FUNi's set which is barely a month old.

It was selling like hotcakes the first few weeks or so. It was amazon's number one seller in anime for a good while too.

Its sales were up as it came out, and everything that goes up (sales wise) must eventually come down. I don't mean this in a "FUNIMATION DAYS ARE NUMBERED!!!!1" psychopath kind of way but it's simply how it works. I imagine set 2 will pick up similar numbers, unless somehow we have a miracle of people going "widescreen? the fuck?" and returning/complaining*.

Re: The Fifth Element- Not nessecerally a BAD movie, and I can sit through a lot of it, except for Chris Tuckers character, and that quite a few of the ships were more or less pulled out of Star Wars.

*Fate might turn around and put the "OMG WIDESCREEN" people in a minority. We can only wait and see (and do our best, of course).

FDLink wrote:Looking on Amazon, I noticed something that seems to contradict the perception that this set is "selling like hotcakes". The set is listed at #664 in DVD sales last I checked. Granted, Amazon isn't representative of overall sales, but it's gotta be a little embarrasing for FUNi when your newly-released set is getting throttled by the Blu-ray version of The Fifth Element (#99).
I've just the amazon listing and the set is now #594 in DVD sales and is #4 on the chart of best selling anime DVDs. I found this quite impressive for a set that was released for a month now.

As for the second season set, it's #1,789 in DVD sales, and is #18 on the chart of best selling anime DVDs. Very impressive for a set that's not going to be released for the next couple of months.

Now I'll admit these aren't massive sales ratings, but let's face it, anime DVDs aren't the hot sellers on amazon (the best selling DVD set, Sprited Away, is only #375 in the sales chart).

Hi, This is my first post on this site :D
To start off, I currently own the dragonbox and the "Remastered" Set.
I dont see a huge problem with the "Remastered" set to be honest, my First complaint is that the cropping is a tad too much but besides that the set is actually a pretty good deal. $30 for 39 episodes is the greatest.

o and My SECOND AND BIGGEST COMPLAINT is the crappy box to go with these discs, its not done very well at all and the cover is just soo plain.

I've had noticed someone in this thread actually made their own dvd cover. I personally threw the discs in a fatpak and made my own cover.

MY COVER:

First of all, welcom to the forums Ninja_Star. Second, no pictures are allowed in signatures. Third, I really like your custom cover art. :P

Again with the same rationalization that will ensure we will NEVER get a 4:3 version. Thank you for that, good sir.

Decent cover art, though.

That's an amazing looking custom cover, Ninja_Star. Great job. With each new custom cover I see, I'm astounded at how FUNI's official box art pales in comparison.

Surely someone must have looked at the 'big-orange thing' before it was released and said what a piece of crap it was. Is there anyone here who actually likes FUNI's box-art? I know very little about photoshop, but I'd wager that I could come up with something far more interesting in an hour or two.

Well from what we know from Funimation, They have a habit of stopping releases and releasing them repeadly *Example is the Saiyan or vegeta Saga*

But for a 4:3 version, I seriously doubt it. I guess we should just live with what we have at the moment.

BTW~ Thanxs for the comments on the cover :)

Being bored and noticing that there aren't as many comparison shots hin here as I thought, I figured I'd put these ones up that I put together:

the classic 4-way shot
the chibi scene from the ED
Gohan approaching Goku

As seen by these comparisons, the amount of footage gained on the sides as well as the amount lost varies somewhat. But as mentioned by many many others, the "unseen footage" is throwaway and what really matters is the general 4:3 image.
10-30 minutes have most likely passed between my clicking to comment and actually posting. Curse my habit of thinking how to word my posts for too long!

There are definently some cases where the "new" footage holds more content than that cut out. However that is often not the case. Why can't they make it so it shows all the footage? The "new" stuff and the classic 4:3 footage?

They could, actually. It'd be a custom aspect ratio, but it could be done. Problem is, it'd have a little black on all sides and thus be "unl33t" and unmarketable. Widescreen/16:9 is a lot easier to sell than a custom ratio.

Ninja_Star, that cover is officially the coolest thing I've ever seen.

Please, a full resolution version would be much appreciated!

Did anyone notice how the gain seems to be selective, IE it varies from shot to shot?

Well, it's all about covering up dirty film, and some might not be as dirty in certain spots?

Nah, that's too indepth for FUNimation. Maybe there's another sane reason?

Well, that's if you spliced both versions together. I take it that if FUNi had taken the entire frames, they easily could have done this (though it'd require actual touch-up work :P). I was actually kind of hoping for some sort of fan-solution in this regard when I first heard about the WS releases, until I realized that there are parts we could probably never get our hands on. It makes me wonder, though, why Pony Canyon didn't include the entire image when they did all of their re-positioning.

Probably because Pony Canyon knew that fans wouldn't give a crap about an extra cloud or mountain. Hell nobody knew/cared it even existed until FUNimation started to hype the shit out of it. :P
I know I didn't anyway.

 Now THAT is a good cover, although I have one complaint: It doesn't mention widescreen ANYWHERE. Ah, well. It's only something you will be using yourself, right? (I'd actually like to use that too. Could you post one with higher resolution?)

It would also have curved corners.
