You mean like Son Goku and His Friends Return!, The OVA remake, and Episode of Bardock?
Yes.

But even the English dub audience doesn't deserve the agony of Episode of Bardock.

But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Actually, since they put out a fandub for EoB, they'll just use that instead of the original.

We should do a road-tour with a copy of this movie, and strap people (especially dub fans) down "A Clockwork Orange"-style to watch this.

Nothing would give me greater joy.

Except the fans who enjoy both dubs. Certainly a minority in the fanbase, but they still exist.

It's called "Dragon Ball", not "Yamcha's Good Time Friends" I swear, when people say things like this, I have to assume they've just had an aneurysm. With this fanbase, if a character's screentime amounts to anything less than finishing off the antagonist, then he or she "didn't do anything."

To be brief. I saw it, I liked it, I liked Bills, I liked the fights, I hope they do sequels.

What let it down was it was a little too overly comical, Pilaf and co were unnecessarily in the film just to appeal to kids. Piccolo should have acted goofy rather than Vegeta. I also couldn't take to the japanese voices, especially Goku's.

I just hope any sequels are a buit more serious like the Cell saga or something.

I just can't understand the pacing issue comments. I'm tempted to say they stem from a group used to the 40-50 minute super serious features that serve no other purpose but to showcase fighting as fast as possible. Battle of Gods is written like a traditional film with a traditional narrative structure and I felt it's pacing was perfectly on point.

You get your standard intro where the threat is explained, followed by a comedic re-introduction to our protagonist. Following that, we're shown Birus and Whis as they get their proper introduction and initial characterisation along with setting up the plot of the film - finding the Super Saiyan God.

So we've only seen one side of Birus at this point - a laid back, almost comical view with no real threat. So that's where the initial Goku vs. Birus fight comes in. It serves two purposes; to reinforce Goku's fighting spirit with his initial challenge but also to show the immeasurable power of Birus. He defeats Goku is one tiny hit and from then on the audience is 100% aware of just how terrifying this character can be. It's not much different from the introduction of Buu as this huge, pink ball of stupidity and yet we see him behaving absolutely ruthlessly. It's so typical of Dragon Ball and Toriyama's villains.

So now we move onto the part of the film where I believe most people's issues come from - Bulma's birthday party and the reintroduction of Pilaf & co. I think the perception of pace and necessity here comes down to what you wanted from the film. If you were looking for a feeling that was strictly from the Z films then sure, I can see why you may not have enjoyed this section but were you going in with expectations that this may be more in line with the actual series then I think it may have been more enjoyable.

So firstly, Vegeta and his role - I have to say, I really enjoyed it. It was a great depiction of a calm, more caring Vegeta whilst still retaining that Saiyan pride and thirst for battle. His whole shtick with calming Birus was just fantastic. It was so nice to see a bit humour injected into that character. It really reinforced the natural change we'd seen happen to him over the course of the series. And I think that was entire point of this middle section, it picked out characters that were essential to the story and brought us up to date on their characters. Aside from humour though, it was also pretty intense to see how easily Birus could snap so it certainly served more purpose than just for comedy's sake.

The presence of Pilaf etc. seems to heavily divide everyone. Some feeling they were unnecessary and 'could have been skipped' whilst others saying it was a nice nostalgic comedy skit that did actually have bearing on the story. I have to agree with the latter, their entire presence is pure fan service, it's hilarious, it's a throwback and it helps to remind the audience of just how much things have changed for the characters. At the same time, it reintroduces the Dragon Balls and serves to set up more ways in which to rile Birus up (along with facilitating some Gohan development and comical scenes). It's the whole 'calm before the storm' deal, you've got the underlying tension of Birus' temper with the typical Dragon Ball comedy on top. It has a purpose and serves it well.

Of course we then move into the Birus vs. SSJG Goku fight whose complaints seem to stem from the length of time Goku is actually in that form (aside from animation complaints). Honestly, on a personal level, I'm glad it wasn't played up too much. Near enough every film ends with Goku getting a miraculous power boost and winning hands down. This was a nice change in which we saw Goku actively disliking the form due to not achieving it on his own. Of course, we then see him lose and that's that. I felt the fight was long enough, it didn't feel like it dragged nor did the battle feel too short. It was broken down by the dialogue in the cave and proceeded to ramp up from then on until it ended. I felt like that was a very smart way of achieving a lengthy battle without it resulting to nothing but punches for 20 minutes.

I'm not saying the film is perfect but I do feel a lot of the complaints regarding pacing are a little misguided. It felt like a film-film rather than an anime-film, if you catch my drift.

The party was my favorite part since we got to see all the characters interacting with each other. The fighting itself wasn't a big deal to me because it's not technically part of the series anyway.

The way Vegeta acted reminded me of how he might have acted if he had ended up being a King or something without being so ruthless. Like attending to various intergalactic parties and using diplomacy because he knew what he was dealing with thanks to his dad.

Via ANMTV
Now that the Spanish dub of BoG has premiered in Ecuador, a "voice clip" of the spanish voice of Goten has been revealed. From what I'm able to hear from the clip it sounds similar to Laura Torres, although we still don't know who the actress who did her is.

The cast list for the principal characters has also been revealed with the exception of Goten's actress.

Here are the other premiere dates of BoG for Latin America.
Argentina, Perú y República Dominicana: 26 de Septiembre
México y Paraguay: 27 de Septiembre
Chile, Costa Rica y Nicaragua: 3 de Octubre
Colombia y El Salvador: 4 de Octubre
Uruguay: 10 de Octubre
Venezuela: 11 de Octubre
Bolivia: 17 de Octubre

On the nature of the fandom, it's hardly fair to say it's just the dub fans that argue about power debates, or hate on the movie just because it's more focused on comedy - I mean, have you uh, somehow missed the fire-fights that have been going on on this very forum about those very things? So yeah, not exactly fair to classify other boards or dub fans as bad in that regard, when it's not as different here as you might think.

OK, so I have my copy now and I've seen the film.

Will scribble up something later (if I'm not too lazy), but for now, anyone else think the 2nd disc included with the special edition was absolute pants? I mean, even if you speak Japanese, I can't help but feel that these extras are a little half-arsed. Seriously, most of them are just interviews thrown on a silent menu. I was promised actual footage from the premiere, not the voice actors standing on a stage in front of a screen. I wanted footage of the whole crowd firing the Kamehameha with the confetti and streamers. I don't know why I ordered this thing before the Jump Special was announced as an extra, because that was really the only saving grace on this disc and the only thing that I can really justify forking out the extra dollars for. The main disc on the other hand, I was blown away by the number of trailers they included. I swear, I hadn't even seen half of the TV Spots.

So now that I got my little whine out of the away, I can whine more about the movie at a later date...

I watched this movie twice already since yesterday, and I am truly blown away. It was great for once to see all the characters hanging out, having a good time, in situations that isn't written badly. IMO like the party episode after Buu. But this movie I believe was fun, fleshed characters out really good, for once it wasn't just, Goku and crew go camping, bad guy comes, Goku uses Genki Dama and saves the day. It actually had a good story flow, and the villains I think were even great. I like that they look none threatening, but they really are. This is now my favorite DBZ movie, it was Dead Zone, but now it is. I hope we get BoG's 2.

Or just the action genre oversimplification that "no punches thrown = no reason to be on screen," which is so wrong it's almost funny. I mean, Piccolo has no problem with it, and Bulma's been shooting that one the bird since 1989.

Funny when you realized Yamcha and Tenshinhan were in every single Z-fighters pan shot, right up to Beerus' last threat, yet I think neither of them spoke. Krillin, on the other hand, was getting into straight parody territory with Bulma's age, which I absolutely loved. Hoping Team Four Star adapts that one should they reach the series end.

Yamcha spoke in the film, he was the one who noticed the Dragon Ball was missing.
