To be fair, George Lucas was never the same person after the stroke. At least, I assume he suffered a stroke, as nothing else would account for his treatment of his own material.

FUNimation's decisions seem to be made by their marketing department.
A YouTube channel with no AMVs on it? I know, it's hard to believe.

Oh come on.

Frankly, I'd find Dragon Ball Z worse off than Star Wars; Star Wars doesn't have theatrical-version DVDs going for scalper prices (last I checked), doesn't have glaring restoration issues that somehow render the films unwatchable (I can say as much for prequel DVDs and have read no such fatal criticism of the Blu-Rays), and if nothing else Lucasfilm learned to stop messing with aspect ratios when the rest of their industry did!

But then I'm that guy with 4:3 cropped special editions from 2004 when he didn't know any better who is enjoying his movies despite the nonsense, don't mind me (again!).

I know that was in terrible taste. :) The two cases are really quite different anyway. Star Wars was systematically changed in fundamental ways from its theatrical run. Changing plot points, replacing actors, or inserting new scenes all seem a lot worse to me than cropping or color correction. If these new blu rays say, added new animation so that instead of fighting Cell at the Cell Games tournament, they all sat down to play a game of Go.... then we might be on the level of Star Wars remastered.

Irrelevant. He didn't direct but financed, produced and wrote the story of those two. In the end, he owns them.

Not to mention that the restoration made in 2003/4 of the OT offered great picture quality, definitely not the same as this cropped, DNR fest seen on this Season release...

The plot was never changed and how can it be worse when the changes are part of the creators' intent?

Anyway, this is going way off-topic.

One thing I'll say about this release: if you want it in 4:3, you should probably get yourself together and get vocal about it TO FUNI, and not just bitch on some forum. Politely, but still, collect your voice together and make your voice heard. I always see a lot of whining here but not a lot of people actually, you know, get together trying to make things happen.

I haven't read the whole thread, but the whole Dragon Box and how hard it is to find certain volumes thing; DVDs that come out in volumes are always published with larger print runs up front and less toward the end. So there's more Box 1s than Box 7s and on and on. Cardcaptor Sakura is heavily like this; it's the reason the final DVD alone is the same price as most of the first half of the show. They project sales and don't over produce... and not a lot of people were buying CCS by the end.
My favorite movie henchman is Sancho.

Follow my stupid crap on Twitter. Please note, I do not have time to reply to any PMs about color correction methods anymore; sorry about that.

Sadly, this is the problem right there - not a lot of people, even when they do contact FUNi directly about it, be it posting about it on their forums rather than here or even bringing it up at cons, are even remotely polite about it. They just throw their hands up in the air, stomp their feet, and whine like little kids not getting their way...which is the exact opposite kind of person that FUNimation or any other company is going to take even remotely seriously.

Amazon recently updated the product image, we can see clearly that the image is one large image.

I like the look of the cover and discs.
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

I like the covers and how they all connect up to each other. Not a fan of the artwork on the discs though.

Why is region locking even a thing anymore? FUNi never used to be so restrictive with it (the original DVD releases of the movies were R1, 2, and 4) but now they're being difficult. Thankfully, games consoles are starting to see its pointlessness with all 8th gen systems bar 3DS and Wii U (c'mon Nintendo, get with the program) being region free. I don't even know why Sony even implemented region encoding on Blu-Ray discs if the PS3 is region free in the first place.

That's what I'm saying! Why do they even exist! :P What is there purpose? I really have no idea.

In some cases, it's an exercise in unproductiveness as due to the fact that it is easier to import things these days, making products region free would help sales rather than hurt them. As little Japanese as I know (I know a little katakana), I'd still be interested in importing J Legend Retsuden for 3DS (if only for Super Butōden 2), and I bet some of you would too.

Wow, I love those covers.

...if they somehow switch to 4:3 at the last second, I may just pick these up...

I've actually found that the disks do say Region A/B so these should work in Europe.

Hahaha I bet they did the connected cover art that way rather than spine art in case they cancel this release before they complete the entire series, that's slick on their part!
"You might think you know everything there is to know about me, but really, you're not even CLOSE."

"Never give in--never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy." ~ Sir Winston Chruchill / Dragon Ball Z in a nutshell

How I enjoy the anime:
