Three of the better supervisors in one episode, wow. Karasawa got heavily corrected too. I hope the one week break and yashima helps a little bit in this crazy production.

Karasawa wasn't corrected. No way the lead supervisor hands his own work off to someone else; that wouldn't make any sense.

Anyway, updated with the image on the previous page. And...

Here's a few (a lot) of Tate's scenes:

And here's Shimanuki's cut:

The Black shots were too covered in motion blur or didn't look good as stills so I left them out.

And here's Shimanuki's cut:

Damn, Shimanuki's part wasn't fluid at all.. It was 1 frame per punch.. What happened?

I'd say this episide was passable with the animation. Some parts during the fight were really slow but there were some nice cuts here and there. I really liked when the angles went all crazy when Goku and Black clashed fists.

Nothing. That's pretty typical for uncredited key animation. You just do the bare minimum to get things done and move on with your actual job -- in this case, correcting bad shots. For what it was, I thought it was good enough! Solid conversative action like Z had back in the day.

The guy just supervised #48, for the time he had, he did a decent job.

Damn knew I recognized tate. I'm starting to really understand the different animators styles. All thanks to this thread (:

I made a bet with Alee9977 that Vegeta won't be beaten quickly by an opponent. If I lose, I switch my avatar to Vegeta getting beat by hit. If I win, he switches it to Vegeta holding Black by his hair. This will last a month.

NEP looks surprisingly good. Especially those drawings.

Solid episode, the fight was a little short, but mostly pretty good.
The thing that interests me the most actually is that this wasn't the episode Ken Otsuka is working on, hopefully that means he won't be rushed too bad with whatever episode that is.

Also the ED was solo animated by Yamamuro? That's actually surprising to me, the art has a lot more life to it than I expect of Yamamuro these days.

If by NEP, you mean ED, then yeah. :P

You can thank Ishitani for her great storyboard and direction for that!

The fight scenes in this episode were actually pretty fun. I liked some of the angles and the screen movement during the fight. Even though some parts seemed a bit stiff, but overall it was pretty entertaining. Quality wise, it was ok. It would've been a lot better if the movements in some parts were a bit more fluid, but its not a big deal. The choreography was pretty darn good in this episode.

Btw, now I'm starting to understand the value of Naoki Tate in DBS. This series really needs him!!

I'm no expert on any of this...I would barely notice animation if I hadn't been reading this thread. I need to rewatch to see the actual quality but I loved the scene where Goku threw Black to the ground. Just the way Black fell and landed seemed like a great concept and flowed well within the episode (to me).

The fight was pretty average. Above average for Super for sure. Just regular mostly on model fast paced dbz esque fight.

This episode's animation wasn't that bad. I was expecting better character designs but whatever...I wish every episode in super was like that. The next one looks like the 2 episode of this arc in terms of art. Especially that ssj Trunks

I'm wondering if we could have a meta-discussion regarding this thread? I want to change up a few things in the first post to hopefully improve the usefulness of the thread, but I'd like some feedback and suggestions.

Right now, each episode is displayed in image form in a spoiler tag under their respective supervisor, but as the series has grown, it's begun to get a little crowded (and probably unoptimised for those with slow internet). I'd like to change this to a simple linked text format for the sake of ease. Then readers can simply open up an episode from a supervisor in each tab and compare easily, rather than the current method that requires a lot of scrolling.

I'd also like to throw in some information about the supervisors -- their styles and their history as an animator. While I won't be able to provide in-depth information for every supervisor, I can at least offer up a little bit of information about their work. Not sure if that's something people would be interested in?

Anyway, it'd look something like this:

-

Image

Animator Info: Beginning as a inbetweener at Seigasha, Naoki Tate was quickly promoted to a key animator role where he worked under Masahiro Shimanuki for Dragon Ball Z, and onward into GT. Despite producing reasonably nice work under the Dragon Ball brand, it wasn't until his work on One Piece that he began to develop his trademark style, and eventually morph into one of Toei's most prolific animators. Heavily inspired by the work of Sushio and Hiroyuki Imaishi on Mamoru Hosoda's One Piece Movie 6, Tate developed a loose and somewhat abstract form of animation; expressions and poses are wildly exaggerated and contorted to hugely emphasise the intended emotion or movement. The results are eye-catching, but have caused controversy among the uninitiated or those fonder of more conservative styles. Regardless, his reputation within the animation industry has landed him a number of high-profile episodes on Dragon Ball Super.

Tate's character designs are often much less daring than what's found within his action animation, and bear more resemblance to his work during Dragon Ball Z. Keep an eye out for thick, arched eyebrows, upturned noses, and rounded ears and faces. Keep in mind that, due to Super's rushed production and the number of cuts Tate does per episode, the overall polish often varies from episode to episode -- his work may seem looser or more polished depending on the episode's circumstances.

Episodes Supervised:
Episode 5
Episode 11
Episode 18
Episode 26
Episode 32 (w/Akira Kato and Kaoru Takamura)
Episode 38 (w/ Yui Kinoshita & Tomoko Kusunoki)
Episode 47 (w/ Osamu Ishikawa)

Notable cuts Goku vs Freeza, Goku vs Vegeta, Jaco Character acting, Vegeta vs Hit, Goku vs Hit, Trunks vs Goku Black

-

I feel like something like this might be more beneficial than just screenshots. The thread primarily started as a way for me to track the styles that have now developed in each animator, but it's come my attention over these many months that a lot of people visit this thread to learn about who animates what, and what to look for in each supervisor's episodes. Giving a little more background information and some description on each style might make this a little more helpful!

If you have any feedback on what I've detailed, or have any suggestions about what could be added, please let me know!

Amazing, Ajay! I think the new display of the OP would be cleaner and more informative to people who enter this thread wanting to know more about the supervisors, their style and, of course, the most notable moments in terms of animation in DBS.

I really like that idea, Ajay! It probably would be really convenient, and I'm sure it would help a lot of people curious about this kind of thing. It would look much more organized as well, I really like how that Tate sample looks! I admittedly get a little lost sometimes when checking the spoiler tabs for this thread these days, your idea would be a really nice improvement. While I'm sure there's nothing I could find that you couldn't or that you don't already know, I'm willing to help with any research or interesting little tidbits if you'd like, since I need to research these guys myself for my Staff Roundup!

This episode was interesting. Very nice world building. The fight between Goku and Black was decent. Not Vegeta vs Hit or Goku vs Hit level obviously but it was fine. The fight was short, I thought that it was gonna be a long battle as I didn't expect Black to return to his world. I think the entire point of the short fight was to give some character development for Black. The main battle is yet to come, so I am excited for that. Also Karasawa had around 5-6 weeks for this episode, so I did wonder at the end of 49 about who else was gonna be paired with him. But I didn't expect 2 new supervisors to be paired with him. I thought it was gonna be the regular ones.

So, first up is Takamura Kaoru. He is from Precure I think. Some of his notable past works have been some key animation for Darker Than Black, Soul Eater and Durarara!! Season 2. Next up is Nobuzane Setsuko. He did some work on World Trigger, did some key animation for the BoG movie. Also did some work in the past on Saint Seiya, Digimon and Toriko. Looks like Toei are really trying hard. Its great to see some talented people like these guys working on the series. I hope they stick around along with the regular ones, so that finally the important guys can get some extra time. If Toei keeps on improving like this, hopefully the schedule will finally get to the place we want it to be.

EDIT: I think Super has already had 16 different supervisors so far.
