The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
Not a translation of a specific page or line, but rather a question.
I know the Japanese have one word that covers both stars and planets. Can their word for Galaxy also be used to refer to other things? I ask because I've seen people argue over how many Galaxies there are in DBZ, and wanna cover all my bases

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
Japanese doesn't use plurals the same way English does. Based on certain recently revealed facts, it's become clear that what people referred to in English as "The North Galaxy", "The South Galaxy", etc was actually meant to be "The North Galaxies", "The South Galaxies", etc.jcogginsa wrote:Not a translation of a specific page or line, but rather a question.

Adamant's answer is probably what you're looking for, but I'll add an alternate angle just in case.jcogginsa wrote:I know the Japanese have one word that covers both stars and planets. The word for galaxy, 銀河 ginga, originally only referred to the Milky Way galaxy. The same is true for the word "galaxy" in Greek, and in English to some extent, because the idea of other galaxies didn't exist until about a century ago. Before that, other galaxies like Andromeda were originally considered a nebula (星雲 seiun in Japanese), and occasionally you still see evidence of that, like in the name puns for Slug's henchmen.
But I don't believe any of this has any in-universe significance in Dragon Ball. Modern Japanese has multiple ways to distinguish the Milky Way galaxy specifically, so 銀河 ginga is typically just "galaxy" as a generic term.
The generic term for stars/planets/etc, 星 hoshi, is a separate issue. It's a single character basically meaning "bright object in the night sky" that isn't really a scientific term on its own, although the character is used in compounds to form many scientific terms (where it's pronounced sei, like in the aforementioned 星雲 seiun). English just doesn't have any single words like that; "astronomical object" is the closest term we can get, and that's obviously very wordy and scientific.
Meanwhile, 銀河 ginga is made of two characters that separately mean "silver" and "river," and the etymology and definition happened to evolve the very same way "galaxy" did from ancient Greece.

Which is the last panel (the one where you see Piccolo and Krillin) supposed to say here because I found two different translations

Don't ever rely on the one with the crappy quality. It was done like more than a decade ago and the translators didn't do that accurate a translation, though of course it's still understandable.

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
The guy who re-scanlated the Majin Buu arc doesn't speak Japanese, and relied on some pretty bad translators for awhile. Later chapters are based on the official translation by VIZ. With that said, the panel in question is correct on the low quality page.dbgtFO wrote:The one with the better quality is what's most accurate.Helios518 wrote:Which is the last panel (the one where you see Piccolo and Krillin) supposed to say here because I found two different translations

The actual panel in question is the very last one, the one, where Piccolo says the boys are their last hope, because Helios want to find out, if it really was implied they were stronger than Piccolo.EmmaWinters wrote:With that said, the panel in question is correct on the low quality page.

During Gohans match with Evil Boo. In the English dub they say : So Hot Shot, you want to fight Majin Boo.
Fight you. No I want to kill you.
What is said in the raw Japanese version?

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
Yes, he wrote that, but I guess he got confused due to the crappy one being reversed to read from left to right, instead of right to left. Or maybe something else, but in any case after I had given him that reply, he went to the Unofficial Power Levels thread to discuss whether or not Piccolo was stronger than Goten and Trunks with that page and the particular line about the boys being their last hope as evidence, so that really was just the panel he wanted translated.EmmaWinters wrote:Uhh.dbgtFO wrote: The actual panel in question is the very last one, the one, where Piccolo says the boys are their last hope, because Helios want to find out, if it really was implied they were stronger than Piccolo.

Edit: This comes from the Dragon Ball: Adventure Special. It appears that those boxes with the stars are actually assessing the fights based on the exhibited strength, speed, skill, excitement as well as the length of the fight.

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread

Any help? The first one should say something along the lines of: "by absorbing the South Kaioshin Buu got a strong body, but it's not clear how it changed his personality", and the second one that he got calmer when he absorbed the Dai.
Third one is supposed to be "even Super Saiyan 3 Goku is no match for Gohan-Buu".
I'd like more substantial word-per-word translations, though.

When discussing fusing with Gohan, Goku asks if they should both become Super Saiyans in Viz. In Japanese does he still refer to both of them turning Super Saiyan, or just himself?

Is Ox-King really a good translation of Gyūmaō or?
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
Can someone translate these? Here:
Reason why I'm asking is because Viz has both Freeza and Vegeta saying Chi, but I know Vegeta and Freeza's army usually referred to power as Battle Power most of the time. I guess I'm just trying to see if there was ever a point where Vegeta and Freeza mentioned someone's Ki/Chi rather than Battle Power.

Not particularly. It misses out part of the meaning.ekrolo2 wrote:Is Ox-King really a good translation of Gyūmaō or?
牛魔王 - Gyūmaō
牛 - Cow/Ox/Oxen
魔王 - Devil/Demon King
It's same the kanji found in 大魔王 (Daimaō / Great Demon King).
It should be Ox-Demon King, as he's based on the character of Niúmówáng (literally Gyūmaō in Japanese) from Journey to the West. I've seen Ox Tyrant used before, but I don't know if I like that.
