Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
I think the biggest selling point these Blu-Rays have for me is the fact they fixed the shaking camera. That really really gets to me.
Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Watching some videos and comparison stuff, I'm pretty much solidified in my feelings that I still prefer my Dragon Boxes.
Ok, the Blu-rays look great. I'm gonna say, LEAPS AND BOUNDS Better as a remastering job than the Orange Bricks looked. Bravo FUNi, you did good.
But looking at the Blu-rays, my biggest thing is the grain. Either from the transfer in Hi-res, them having multi-generational masters, their color correction, or a combo of all three, the grain is FAR more apparent and pronounced up to a level I really don't like. And while the line art is crisper on the Blu-rays, what I've seen is inconsistent and often goes blurry again. Plus, The crispness isn't that much of an improvement. When I popped in my Yu Yu Hakusho Blu-ray, the crisp quality of the art made a lot of things pop at me, and I noticed details I never noticed before. In DBZ here, I'm seeing all of the same details, nothing new, just sharper.
Color-correcting my DBoxes in VLC is still the best way to go for me. If I wana see DBZ in HD, I'll watch my Kai Blurays

KAI looks like crap though. It's censored, cut down, even blurry in places.

You could begin with an actual response to the post, for starters.DanielGClapp wrote:Oh lord, where do we begin?mikezilla2 wrote:KAI looks like crap though. It's censored, cut down, even blurry in places.
Please don't just post up seemingly-back-handed quips. If you have something to say, actually say it. If you don't, don't.

That comparison isn't fair to either source. The Dragon Box looks unusually blurry.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Okay! I finished my comparison video - I let it encode over night - and have uploaded it for everyone to download if they wish. Here is the URL:
http://www.mediafire.com/?028ql64yb2z4dxi
This should be encoded for playback on your PC or your PS3 (I will admit, I didn't have time to test it on the PS3, but it should work - if it doesn't, let me know and I may redo it). Otherwise, use CCCP to play it on the PC (I just had to stick that in there!
).
I downscaled the new Funi BD to 720P and used the same scene from the Orange Bricks and R2 Dragon Box (adjusted for aspect ratios) all on a 1080P frame.
It's a 200 MB download roughly for about a bit over a minutes clip -- but that meant I could jack the bitrate up to about 20 MBits/sec on the video. This helps keep the grain in the video.
Audio is from the Funi DB as well, but I just compressed it as usual. For the Japanese audio I can't tell that much a different in the lossless encode and the audio track from a Dragon Box. I'm not going to upload it to YouTube or anything like that as the compression will screw with the grain you can see on the new BD release. Subtitles are from the BD also.
Let me know what you think and if it changes any minds or not.

Can you upload some of the audio from the Blu-ray and the equivalent DBox and Season set audio to compare? Japanese, obviously.

Hmmm...ya know, I guess I understand why people want NEPs. They want them for the sake of having the complete experience. Me personally, though? I loathe NEPs with a fiery passion. They do nothing but spoil the next episode, so I skip over them every time. Not just for "Dragon Ball," not just for anime, but for literally everything I watch. So the lack of NEPs on this Blu-Ray set is something that I not only don't mind, but actively welcome. If I really want to watch them for nostalgia's sake, there's always YouTube.Raykugen wrote:NO NEXT EPISODE PREVIEWS NO BLU-RAY.

Ha ha, and if the next episode preview dosen't spoil the next episode, the episode title surely will!TheBlackPaladin wrote: Me personally, though? I loathe NEPs with a fiery passion. They do nothing but spoil the next episode, so I skip over them every time.

There's little point in skipping over them when you've watched the anime several times already, too. It's new content~!

I love CCCP! When I wanted to get rid of it, it completely fucked over my hard drive's Windows installation!ect5150 wrote:Otherwise, use CCCP to play it on the PC (I just had to stick that in there!).
Apparently Marc knows something similar happening to someone else. So yeah, great thing that CCCP.

This isn't part of the BD spec as far as I'm aware. 1440x1080 only is part of the spec in it's anamorphic form, so it will ONLY come out 16:9.SSJMan wrote: avc

Also, your average of 25 to 32 is FAR below your earlier stated number of 40. I haven't done the math again but if I remember the math I did last time I believe that is actually possible on 3 disks.
So you'd have it on 3 disks, but 3 disks that couldn't be sold because they don't meet the specifications of the format.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Very true, but at least I'm trying! I do find it kind of funny how many animes have the same format for titling their episodes, though. The title will consist of two phrases. The first one will end with one exclamation mark, and the second will end with either two exclamation marks or an exclamation mark and a question mark (much like Penguintruth pointed out). And the first phrase will be relatively vague, while the second phrase will flat-out say what's going to happen. So I chuckle a bit when I see those episode titles, if only because I'm seeing in my mind...Tanooki Kuribo wrote:Ha ha, and if the next episode preview dosen't spoil the next episode, the episode title surely will!TheBlackPaladin wrote: Me personally, though? Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
cheers to ect5150 for the comparison , i can say with out a shadow of a doubt even after owning the US dragon boxs and the madman bricks ( the ones that skip marathon play for like 3 sets) that id happily get rid of my orange bricks and get the blu rays , its not question of if but rather if i should wait until they start putting them out in collected sets of sorts do we know roughly how many levels will come out ? i know with madman when they got down to the last of the bricks they brought out a big box set tho with the disks unchanged just thin cases which would of been cool had i not been buying the sets day one
so yea not so sure madman will put out the levels in a set( coming out January) as I'm not sure they have made any huge collected sets or box sets for blu ray ....
help would be appreciated

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Not that I care either way about the NEPs but WITH them you technically would only have to watch every 3rd episode to get the list of a show.
Like if you watched a show on Monday you would get the last episode recap and the episode and the next day preview. Then watch on Thursday and you would see what happened on Wednesday AND friday.
But those aren't a big deal to me, I was buying these anyways, but nice to see theres a bunch of extras and that foil card thing [I assume with each one.]

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Yes! I'm not at home to give specifics, but the back of the bluray case has listed all the separate 'levels' and what episode counts will be in them. I remember thinking there would be roughly 17 or 18 sets like the one just released... which is inline with 291/17. But they apparently have the episodes listed for each one as well on the back. Someone might be able to post a shot of the back of the box - if not I may do it later.mikezilla2 wrote:...do we know roughly how many levels will come out ?
And with regards to posting some comparison audio... I might be able to, but it would be very small clips somewhere. I mentioned this before, but I can't tell a difference in any of the audios (and yes, I have good speakers, it's just that the recording is somewhat old and I'm not sitting down doing audio comparisons). Those would come later though. I'm going to have to start a separate thread for my comparisons I guess.
