Of course, but seeing as to how everyone agrees that Blu-ray aspect ratio is shit, then going the DVD upscale route is the best as far as DBZ Kai is concerned.

NO.

Also, as long as the quality isn't affected, I couldn't care less if the black bars are encoded.

That's pretty much my (admittedly selfish) train of thought also.

Whether the black bars are hardcoded onto the video or not, I don't see what difference it would make.
There would still be blank space there.

Also an upscaled DVD image is never going to look as good as a native Blu-Ray one, ever.

In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter really. I was only trying to stress how much of a waste of space it was. Like I said, on a Blu-Ray, the black bars physically consume data. That area of space contains billions of black pixels. Whereas on a DVD, the picture is assumed by the player and the black bars are actually a space with no picture.

Most Blu-Rays can play DVDs too, so they have to display it at the correct aspect ratio. Kind of strange if you ask me.

I don't see how the bars take up that much space, let alone the episode files themselves.
Does anyone know? I always assumed there was this large waste of space on the BD's, especially in comparison to PS3 games which use the 25GB of the BD to its max.

It's just black. I highly doubt it consumes much data at all. More than likely far less than if the 1920x1080 resolution was completely filled with changing color.
