Yeah, I just noticed that the ripped video is dimmer than the actual DVD. But seeing as how some people were complaining that it was a bit too bright in comparison to the DragonBox maybe that's a good thing. It's not the player because I'm viewing it in the same player I used to make the screenshots. I don't know, I've never actually ripped a full quality MKV from a DVD before so maybe I did something wrong.
I just used the programs ect5150 said he used (SmartRipper to rip the chapter to a VOB file and then mkvtoolnix to cut the clip I want to a MKV) without messing with any of the settings and this is what I got. Well, whatever...

I almost bought season one and two on a whim today at Wal-Mart. I'm glad I had enough sense to check prices on-line before just acting. Seriously, I was excited to see it because I'm missing these episodes in my FUNimation DVDs.
Now I just read in this thread that they are widescreen, naturally googling screencaps, and then finding them here on this board. I know you've heard it all before, I'm not pissed...I'm just disappointed. How many times can I give FUNimation my money for never getting it right. I really really REALLY tried, but I have my breaking point. I've given FUNimation plenty of my money, and at least tried to support the U.S. releases.
I'll be getting the individual Japanese discs. And at this point, I really wouldn't give a damn if someone subtitled the Japanese Dragon boxes and threw them up on a bittorrent somewhere.
You can ignore this. It's just a bit of a rant because I just found today. Excitement turned into crash and burn....

The reason is probably this: The brightness channels on a DVD do not have 256 levels of brightness (like the color channels), but something more like 232 (or around there, I forget the exact number).Lavender Saiyan wrote:but the Video looks slightly less bright than the screencaps. Not a lot, but a tiny bit.
Some players/video cards correct for this fact by extending the brightness range (make the highest value of 232 a 256) and interpolates the rest of the values. Some players/video cards, do not however. If its dimmer for you, chances are you are looking at the original levels, if its brighter like the screencaps, its probably the adjusted luma channels.
And to be honest, I'm not 100% which a normal TV/DVD player is supposed to display. Maybe someone else can chime in.

I bought season 3 from Best Buy yesterday. Here are some notes:
-The booklet is WAY better than Season 2's. They have the VA info in the character profiles like in the first one, and they even have a profile for King Kai and a page about his planet.
-The side of the box is actually a matching color of orange!
-They actually have a trailer for Season 4 in the extras. It'll be episodes 108-139, and the cover has a picture of Trunks. No release date was given.
-For some odd reason, Piccolo wasn't redubbed at all, but Vegeta was. I wonder why Chris Sabat didn't redub him.
-I noticed a couple cases of the lines disappearing in shaking scenes, mainly in episodes 88-89.
-They actually got rid of a lot of scratches and dirt this time around (although the eyecatchers for episodes 81-83 had a lot of dirt)

Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!
EDIT: Some Season Four news, oddly enough. A FUNimation representative has hesitantly informed me (hesitantly as in, "uh, well I think") that the Season Four set will contain Episodes 108-139. This is NOT official until a corresponding announcement is made by FUNimation and is thus obviously subject to change, but I thought it'd be fun to get it out here.
Just glad to see that I was right. Means I can try to hit up this representative about future sets months in advance.
As for the release date, I'll wager that it's gonna fall somewhere inside of December.

I listened to the "YES! YES! I CAN WIN! I CAN WIN!" part and it sounds exactly the same. And in the rest of the episodes, his voice is extremely high-pitched.

No. The Garlic Jr. saga and Trunks saga combined were only 18 episodes. It goes up to the episode where the other Time machine that contained Cell is discovered.SSj Kaboom wrote:So that's what... all of the Garlic Junior and Trunks "sagas?"jjgp1112 wrote:-They actually have a trailer for Season 4 in the extras. *checks MFG's episode list*
So then Season 5 will probably be up to/through the Cell Games.

Probably up to, most likely. That'd be Episodes 140-165. Given what a low episode count that is, they'll probably throw in Cell's initial announcement and the ten days' rest to close off the set and keep the actual events contained to Season Six.SSj Kaboom wrote:So then Season 5 will probably be up to/through the Cell Games.
The Cell Games themselves are large enough to be contained within their own set.

Where will it end, though? I looked at the episode list, if you decided to throw in the 10 days rest, it'd only be 20 episodes. Perhaps it might end at the end of the Other World tournament saga.Li'l Lemmy wrote:Probably up to, most likely. That'd be Episodes 140-165. That's what I was thinking. If Season 5 starts with Imperfect Cell and goes through the Cell Games (Including Trunks' return to the future), that'd be about... 50 episodes? Whoa, maybe that is a little too much.jjgp1112 wrote:Perhaps it might end at the end of the Other World tournament saga.

Yeah, I thought it seemed like they were running out of things to put in the booklet seeing as how the only thing to put under the "Enemies" section in the Freeza saga is "The Four Forms of Freeza!!!ZOMFG11" because everyone else is dead. So there's also a 2 page spread of just a screenshot of Freeza/SSJ Goku. (which actually looks kinda lousy when printed alongside the rest of the booklet's otherwise well-done art) And the entire next page is taken up by a really sweet pic of SSJ Goku that is just awesome in every possible way. I would scan it but I haven't used my scanner in so long I don't know if it even works.jjgp1112 wrote:-The booklet is WAY better than Season 2's. Yeah, I forgot to mention this. It does actually match the same color as the 1st season, which actually makes the 2nd season's off-orange color seem even more out of place.-The side of the box is actually a matching color of orange!![]()
Wait, WHAT!!!???! Holy crap! I have to put that disc back in NOW.-They actually have a trailer for Season 4 in the extras. It'll be episodes 108-139, and the cover has a picture of Trunks. No release date was given.

If anyone cares, here's what my predictions were for the next six sets. I went through a bunch of episode guides and 4:3 DVD listings to make my guesses. This is the best I could come up with, and I'm disapointed how the episode count almost plummets from past sets.
Season 4: 108-139 (32 Eps) Comfirmed already.
Garlic Jr., Trunks, Androids
Season 5: 140-168 (29 Eps)
Imperfect Cell, Perfect Cell, Cell Games: Ultimatum
Season 6: 169-199 (31 Eps)
Cell Games, Goku's Afterlife stuff
Season 7: 200-231 (32 Eps)
Great Saiyaman, World Tournament, Babidi
Season 8: 232-261 (30 Eps)
Majin Buu, Approximately 1/3 of Fusion Saga
Season 9: 262-291 (30 Eps)
Rest of Fusion saga, Kid Buu, End

Looks nice and uniform, at least. 3 sets for each story arc makes sense.Hironobu Timex wrote:If anyone cares, here's what my predictions were for the next six sets. What about according to the sides of the box? How many more will it take to fully spell out "DragonBall Z?"

I heard nine, but I really can't tell on my own. Its not seven, eight would bulk up the episodes without saga sense, and ten would really dilute the episode count. My guess, nine.SSj Kaboom wrote:What about according to the sides of the box? How many more will it take to fully spell out "DragonBall Z?"

What amuses me about all of this is that their "Season" breakups have nothing to do with their actual US television seasons. (And the Japanese run had nothing resembling seasons, so that couldn't be a factor.) The actual first season should have been 1-35 (fall 1996 - spring 1997), second should have been 36-66 (fall 1997 - spring 1998), third should have been 67-117 (fall 1999 - spring 2000), fourth should be 118-194 (fall 2000), fifth should be 195-237 (fall 2001), sixth should be 238-276 (fall 2002), seventh should be 277-291 (spring 2003).
One might say I'm just being picky, and that those aren't all reasonable episode counts for DVD. But it just comes off as unprofessional to me. Bigger companies typically only label their releases as seasons if they reflect the actual television seasons. And when they don't, they get labeled as volumes (Batman: TAS, which was released in (mostly) production order instead of airdate order, 80's Ninja Turtles, which breaks up the longer seasons, Family Guy, which combined the shorter first season with the second as the first volume), or lengthy seasons are sometimes just broken up with labels like "Season One, Volume One" (all of Thundercats, the second season of Gargoyles (
