Which dub?
Not even any "Brilliant scientist" or parachutes

Oh, you think the Grand Tour is your ally, you merely stepped into the Grand Tour. I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn’t see the Super until I was already a man; by then, it was nothing to me but blinding!

Not the Ocean dub, obviously. When people around here say that they are "dub fans" they're usually referring to the FUNi in house dub.Silver Sinspawn wrote:Which dub?

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
I'm sort of softening up to the idea of the dub, too. DBZ Abridged is partially to blame for that. Also partially to blame for that is that, while I prefer the Japanese cast, I haven't disliked the majority of the cast for years. There's a few voices I'd love to see changed and there's a couple I'd like to see tweaked, but the thing keeping me from ever watching the DBZ dub is that horrible script and how disrespectful it is to the original!Kirbopher wrote:I probably said this a long time ago about Sabat too, but trust me. These people GENUINELY give a shit about what they're doing. Chris and Sean, specifically, are incredibly big fans of this stuff just like we are...and I say -JUST- like -WE- are in the sense that they like the show for the same reasons; not the reasons a 10-year old kid watching it on Cartoon Network watching the "butchered" version of it would. They love and respect the original content and if anything I'm GLAD to see how open Sean's being about it while he has the opportunity.penguintruth wrote:I hate that this guy who I hate as Goku is winning me over with his passion. I mean, I really cannot stand his Goku, but I like a lot of the stuff he's saying lately.
I'd just love it if this dub were good enough that I could treat it the way I treat Cowboy Bebop. With Cowboy Bebop, I do prefer the dub, but I can watch either the dub or the Japanese version and be perfectly content because they're both amazing in their own ways! Sometimes, there are moments where I have to watch it in Japanese (like when Spike says "Okiedokie!" in an early episode) or because either something didn't translate well (Andy's Engrish) and sometimes I have to watch it in English because I think moments like, "You take too long to take a shit!" (from the movie) were delivered a lot better in English. However, aside from those few things here and there, I'm perfectly content one way or the other.
If I could watch Kai one way or the other and be perfectly content watching the dub despite being a bigger fan of the Japanese version, that would be more than I ever thought could be accomplished with Dragonball anything and FUNimation.

Ah, thinking about this in the midst of all the good respectable things that seem to be happening makes me kinda sad. I've got three glorious movies with my beloved cast, and there will never be anything more with them.Silver Sinspawn wrote:Which dub?

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
ohaimynameiserik & SonGokuGT, glad we're all cool and having a good time!
Long story short, it sounds like there are quite a few announcements coming our way, and more so than we thought. Whatever this is, the supposed Ocean dub... I guess we should all know better than to expect merely the expected with this franchise.
.
For some people, I guess that's an issue. It's just... not... for me. Something isn't somehow "better" or "more accessible" to me (or any other description) just because the characters are now speaking aloud a language that I'm also fluent in.
My prior statement still stands about having zero interest in watching the series in Cantonese and having the same zero interest in watching the show in English. I think a more appropriate way to phrase it would be that I have the same interest in watching the series in Cantonese that I do in English -- I hope they're both good, it's awesome if they are, but neither of them truly affect my enjoyment of the original version of the show and neither are anything more than a casual curiosity.
Regarding translations -- this mostly has to do with subtitles, but if the translator can't get across everything they need to get across solely in the subtitles, then they aren't good enough. Simple fact. Not to put Steve up on a pedestal, but everything you need to know about the characters is reflected in how they are subtitled. You don't need to hear that Goku is mis-pronouncing "omae" more like "oh - may to "get" that he is a hick and doesn't speak properly. You don't need to understand the "-masu" forms of verbs to understand how back-handedly polite Freeza is being... because it's all, in some way, reflected in the subtitles.
But I suppose that's a whole other conversation, right?
How 'bout that there dub coming up...? I... guess...?
This is about where I'm at on it.Kendamu wrote:No worries. It wasn't the initial announcement. That gave us something to talk about. It was more of a:
"Hey, guys. Something really special is coming up for the dub, but I can't tell you yet."
"I know it, too! But I'm not telling."
"So do I! I'm not saying anything, either!"
"You guys, too? It's so cool, isn't it? I'm not gonna say what it is, either."
The initial announcement itself was fine. It just got a little old after the third or fourth time someone let us know that they had an awesome secret without really even giving us the slightest idea what it was. It became teasing from there.

Dammit, I totally forgot to address the "in my native language" point when I was first respondingMewzard wrote:Well, it is your own view on what you like, I admit. But, on the matter of the last argument, there's a difference in watching a show in one random language, than there is in it's original language (which is closest to the original work) and one's native language (with which one can best grasp some inflections and meanings, without needing a paragraph of notes to explain, if said translation chooses to use it).

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
That one i've bolded has already been confirmed. I was told a while back that the director of the dubbed songs was working on at least 4 or 5 songs. Considering there was only one opening and one ending at the time, I think that suggested insert songs were being covered. Don't know who's singing them but yeah, they are being done.Xyex wrote:Insert song dub, new voice(s) for Kui, Dodoria, Zarbon, and/or the Ginyu Force....

Gah, I am not looking forward to what they do with the insert songs. Will they just reuse the choir backings on Only a Chilling Elegy?ThegreatPirateKing wrote:That one i've bolded has already been confirmed. I'm a lot more hopeful. I think Funi's done a pretty good job with several of their dubbed songs these days.

I totally agree. The dubbed songs from the GT season sets may not have been the perfect but it was still accurate and respectable. I really hope they can pull it off in this case.Mewzard wrote:I'm a lot more hopeful. I think Funi's done a pretty good job with several of their dubbed songs these days.

This is probably the completely wrong place to post this, but I thought I'd tell everyone Rightstuf just billed me on my reserved copy of DBZK. So this should mean my bluray set will be shipping very soon.

English versions of insert songs? Ahaha, oh wow. I can't wait to laugh at how shitty they are.
Kentai wrote:Son Gokuu is a fascinating character anyway, because he is - at face value, anyway - an idiot savant. The victim of violent head trauma as an infant [...] he's a simple bumpkin with a fair share of brain damage who's natural talents to work out what's wrong compensate for his broad lack of common sense. But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Or, y'know, they could turn out pretty good. FUNi's track record with One Piece and even GT has been admirable so far. I can't wait to see what they'll do with Saiyan Blood.penguintruth wrote:English versions of insert songs? Ahaha, oh wow. I can't wait to laugh at how shitty they are.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Dubbed versions of Japanese songs just always sound... awkward. Either you get the words right or the melody right, it's nearly impossible to do both. Add on top of that how intensely silly most Japanese Dragonball songs are, I just don't see it ever working out very well.

As someone who has attempted singing in a character voice, I can tell you right now that it's extremely difficult. Now let's try to imagine Sabat's dear Veggie voice attempting to sing...
